Characters Welcome: Why We’re Tickled Pink Over the Success of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
With an unparalleled amount of praise, it can easily be said that ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK is one of this years best new shows. From nominations to magazine covers, this show is all anyone talks about. I can honestly say one of my favorite past times this year has been asking people if they have watched OITNB, and if they say they haven’t seen it, then I tell them they MUST watch it. The I get the text saying “you ruined my life, when does the second season come out.”
Avid TV watchers will agree when I say ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK changed television, or at least changed the way we watch television. Not only did we finally understand the term “binge watching” we realized it’s actually a life style. And the funny thing about the women’s prison hit is, it’s not even on television! OITNB is a Netflix original, which means it, was produced for Netflix only and can only be viewed on the online streaming service.
The reason so many people watch to see what happens to Piper (Taylor Schilling) or Alex (Laura Prepon) isn’t because it’s got the hottest fashions in TV. (Those orange and beige jumpsuits really aren’t that flattering) And it’s not because of the huge guest stars or elaborate sets. Instead it’s because of Jenji Kohan’s brilliant characters. THE BLACKLIST Scoop: EPs Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath and Star Parminder Nagra Tease What’s Next
NBC’s hit drama THE BLACKLIST, master criminal and spy Red Reddington turned himself in to the FBI so that he could aid them in tracking the world’s most notorious criminals. Whether out of altruism or self-interested motivations, Red’s information turned out to be dead-on and it helped capture numerous evil-doers from the global theater. But in the mid-season finale, Red’s personal enemies sought to capture him and after a deadly standoff, he surrendered and then escaped. When THE BLACKLIST returned, we saw how Red methodically enacted his retribution in tracking down all those who enabled the trap sprung on him. Red is not exactly comfortable with the FBI right now after having been betrayed once and it nearly cost him and Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) their lives. So with a tenuous alliance in place, Red’s adventures in tracking down everyone down that he has on his personal “blacklist” continues. Aiding in that endeavor is fellow FBI agent Meera Malik (Parminder Nagra).
In a recent press call, star Parminder Nagra and executive producers Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath talked about attaining the perfect recipe of blending co-star James Spader with the character Red Reddington and then weaving in a rich array of characters to bring THE BLACKLIST mysteries to life on television screens. My Biggest HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Pet Peeve: Ted and Robin Shippers! (or is it “Truthers?”)
By: Emily Cottone
When it comes to pop culture, I’d like to think that I’m a fairly understanding person. When PUSHING DAISIES was cancelled, I dealt with it as stoically as possible. When Rachel and Joey became an item on FRIENDS, I did my best to ignore that disaster. I even once forgave someone who called season nine of SCRUBS the best in the series (Full disclosure: I did irreversibly lose a little bit of respect for that person). Clearly, I can handle a lot of TV related frustration, but there is one thing I just can’t get past…
How the heck do some people still think that Robin and Ted are going to end up together? [Read more…]
