You Be the Critic: STARGATE UNIVERSE

Thanks to the void left by BATTLESTAR GALCATICA ending its run combined with our rejuvenated interest in all things space courtesy of JJ. Abrams successful STAR TREK re-boot, Sy Fy’s third incarnation of the STARGATE universe, appropriately titled just that, could not have arrived at a better time. Which is why last night, this TV Addict went where I have never gone before and subjected myself to an actual entire episode of STARGATE.

The two-hour pilot kicked off with a literal bang, when some space baddies (who this STARGATE virgin can only assume have a history of blowing stuff up) attacked a planet — forcing the mysterious Dr. Nicholas Rush (Played by ‘foreigner’ Robert Carlyle, so you know he’s both really smart and obviously ‘up to something’) to shepherd a ragtag group of military types (like Louis Ferreira’s Colonel Young and Brian J. Smith’s Lieutenant Scott), politicos (Elyse Levesque’s Senator’s daughter) and computer nerds (David Blue’s Eli Wallace, serving as a guide into the STARGATE universe for us neophytes), among others — haphazardly through a Stargate. Destination: Who-knows-where!

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Fall’s Most Anticipated New Dramas

The GOOD WIFE
Now, stop us if you’ve heard this one before. A public figure gets caught in a very-public scandal and must defend himself while his mortified/humiliated wife graciously stands by his side. Of course, what you probably haven’t heard — after the cameras, nosey reporters and the invitations to guest co-host THE VIEW quiet down— is what happens next. Which is where the titular wife (played to pitch perfect perfection by ER vet Julianna Marguilies) comes in. Will Marguilies’ Alicia Florrick be able to navigate the complexities of work and family while husband Peter (Chris Noth) serves time in the crowbar salon? It certainly will be fun to watch, especially thanks to some of Mrs. Florrick’s new co-workers who include Matt Czuchry (GILMORE GIRLS), Josh Charles (SPORTS NIGHT) and the always entertaining Christine Baranski (CYBILL). THE GOOD WIFE premieres on Tuesday September 22nd at 10PM on CBS, GlobalTV in Canada

FLASHFORWARD
Why does the entire world black out for precisely two minutes and thirty-three seconds, leaving some (including stars Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Sonya Walger among others) with glimpses into a perilous and possibly terrifying future event that will occur on April 19, 2010. Yeah… we have no idea. But what we do know is that thanks to a phenomenal pilot and a final scene that will have you wishing you could flash forward to next week’s episode, ABC execs can breath a deep sigh of relief, having officially found the next big series everybody will be talking about. FLASH FORWARD premieres on Thursday September 24th at 8PM on ABC

TCA Live Blog Day 6: V

5:25PM: Although V executive producer Scott Peters is quick to joke that his secret plan is to try and attract every single Sci Fi fan by turning V into what one critic calls the LOVE BOAT of science fiction courtesy of a cast that includes alum from FIREFLY, THE 4400 and LOST, he promises he really did go with the best actors we could find.

5:27PM: Elizabeth Mitchell reconfirms what every LOST fan already knew: That she is indeed returning to the island (the island, of course being Hawaii, where the show shoots) — more than once — and naturally cannot speak to the fate of Juliet, “I can’t say whether Juliet is alive or dead, but as with all things LOST, it will be tricky.”

5:29PM: Another reporter notes that Morena Baccarin was perfectly cast as the V’s idea of what earth people want to see. Well, duh.

5:32PM: The cast, which we should mention seem to genuinely like each-other, announce their series premiere date in unison (Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 8PM.) A dramatic reading that would have been far more exciting had TV MoJoe not already broken the news hours ago.

5:33PM: A reporter asks the first of far too many questions with regards to V’s place in a post 9/11 world. VVVVvvvvv sorry, ZZZZzzzzzzzz (Yeah, it’s been a really long day!)

Comic Con Live Blog: CHUCK Panel

10:15AM: JEFFSTER opens the CHUCK panel by bringing down the house with a unbelievable high energy performance following an intro video in which CHUCK co-creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak ‘joked’ that they had no idea what to do next now that Chuck knows Kung-Fu!

10:26AM: The genesis of JEFFSTER was courtesy of writer Allison Adler. Zach asks Vik when the CD is dropping, Vik responds, “I think we would be paid more not to sing again.”

10:27AM: In the first of many fan thank-you’s, Zachary Levi tells the audience that “we’re here because of you guys. When you have the best fans in the world who will go out and eat multiple Subway sandwiches and start grassroots campaigns and say we believe in the cast and crew. You guys are incredible. I love you so much.”

AMERICAN IDOL Goes GLEE

Three observations with regards to this really cool video (courtesy of the LATimes) that has this season’s AMERICAN IDOL Top 10 rehearsing just prior to hitting the road for their summer tour.

1. Scott MacIntyre is no Cory Monteith.
2. FOX continues to live up to its name, as in “sly as a…” by having the IDOL Top 10 promote their summer tour with what has now become GLEE’s calling card… seriously, genius! (Not to mention, corporate synergy at its finest.)
3. And speaking of which… can GLEE return any sooner?

1) Michael Scott, THE OFFICE: Sure, he’s insane. But he’s also wildly easy to manipulate. “Hey, Mikey, wanna hit a bar for lunch and some mano-e-mano bonding?”

2) Angela Bower, WHO’S THE BOSS: Come on, how many times did you actually see Tony do anything even remotely “housekeeper”-like?

3) Charlie Townsend, CHARLIE’S ANGELS: Who doesn’t love the idea of a boss who never, ever shows up at the office, instead communicating entirely via telephone?

Review: ROYAL PAINS

Mark Feuerstein, bless him, can gravitate to his own brand of boyish affability regardless of the source material. He’s the definition of solid: as the producer of a low-rated news show in GOOD MORNING, MIAMI; as Toni Collette’s love interest in IN HER SHOES; as Sussana Thompson’s younger boyfriend on ONCE AND AGAIN; and as the Hamptons rent-a-doc on USA’s new dramedy (heavy on the “medy” part) ROYAL PAINS – the guy can’t help but be likable.

And perhaps that’s his problem. Too easily taken as “earnest,” he’s been playing the nice guy for far longer than merited. But what’s one more go, right?

Tonight’s TV Addictions: May 20, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The most dragged-out competition on television crowns another person you won’t remember a year from now (Taylor who?), but not before stretching it out for as long as they possibly can.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE (8PM CBS)
The fourth season concludes with me still never having seen it. Wait, does she really call Scott Bakula’s character “Papa Jeff?” Is that as creepy as it sounds? Anyway, Christine and the guy I can only assume isn’t her daddy rekindle their feelings at Richard’s wedding. But then she gets a major shock. (Despite having never seen a single episode, I’m going to guess the twist involves a pregnancy. Let me know tomorrow if I was right, okay kids?) — CT

GARY UNMARRIED (8:30PM CBS)
The title of tonight’s outing is “Gary Fixes Allison’s Garbage Disposal” but I hear that’s just a euphamism for “they have sex.”

Leyton TREE HILL Exit: Who Cares?

Let me say right off the bat that I’m a Brucas fan from way back, and find Leyton the most snore-inducing TV pair since DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES Mike and Susan. For those uninitiated in the language of fangirls (and boys), Brucas (Brooke & Lucas) and Leyton (Lucas and Peyton) are two of ONE TREE HILL’s founding couples. Come fall, the guy both girls loved will reportedly be exiting the canvas… with Peyton in tow.

And I say “good riddance.”
