On the Record with THE CHICAGO CODE Star Jennifer Beals (Feat. Shawn Ryan)
From the Windy City to the freezing one. Last Wednesday, Jennifer Beals braved the seemingly never-ending Toronto cold for a dizzying array of television appearances, radio spots and face-to-face sit downs to promote her new series THE CHICAGO CODE (airing Monday night at 9PM on FOX and Global TV in Canada). Among the throng of media lucky enough to be given 10 minutes with the actress was your very own TV Addict, who caught up with her in a spacious suite at the luxurious Metropolitan SoHo Hotel where we grilled her on what it’s like facing off with Alderman Gibbons (Delroy Lindo), the fascinating dynamic between Teresa and Jarek, as well as what the future holds for the show.
Tonight’s episode is a fairly pivotal one when it comes to your character’s dealings with Alderman Gibbons. Do you think Teresa is going to be able to bring the Alderman down without compromising her own morals?
Jennifer Beals: Well I think there’s always the temptation to take the shorter path, but I think she’s able to hold off on that for quite some time. I think she knew really early on that it’s not black and white, that said, I don’t think she’s ever been on the receiving end as someone as experienced in covert operations as Alderman Gibbons. They’re both complex characters, you know, Gibbons does a lot of good things but the horrible things he does are really reprehensible and I think that Teresa does a lot of good things but I think this kind of white shadow masks other things that are going on inside her that are difficult to live with at times.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: NIKITA Star Xander Berkeley Defends Division and Reveals His Take on the Show’s Chances of Seeing a Second Season
Logic would dictate that an actor who has made a name for himself by slipping in-and-out of roles for the better part of three decades would be able to appreciate the chameleon-like qualities of Nikita. Unfortunately, in his latest job that has him playing duplicitous Division head Percy, renowned character actor Xander Berkeley’s one-and-only-job is to put a bullet into those chameleon-like qualities (Literally!) So how’s it going so far, what exactly does the future hold for the riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma and whose team should NIKITA fans really be rooting for? We caught up with Xander Berkeley earlier in the week to find out just that.
Having played a multitude of government baddies, were you at all hesitant to sign onto NIKITA?
Xander Berkeley: One might say hesitancy is a recurring motif in my career, followed by grateful reconsiderations. I try not to repeat myself and with 24, I had just done Air Force One not to long before that and it felt like the turncoat sort of agent that they were playing on was something I had done before and I always like to sabotage my career as much as possible by flying under the radar and doing things people haven’t seen me do before! That said, I’m so grateful I reconsidered because they ended up really turning the character [of George Mason] into something and the show was just spectacular, changed my life. I met my wife [Sarah Clarke] through the show and I can’t imagine having said no. Same things with NIKITA. The show had been done before so I think I may have had some ideas about, “Gee is an audience going to want to see this show again,” they did it well before and I felt like there was enough similar to my character to my character in 24 that I was worried about repeating myself. But I read the script, met the people involved and changed my mind because I thought they had great ideas and I loved the writing and the whole direction and again I’m so grateful that I saw the light.
No Ordinary Guest Star! Rebecca Mader Reflects on Her Incredible Journey Thus Far
What’s luck got to do with it? When it comes to the trajectory of Rebecca Mader’s career — who will follow up succumbing to the most notable nosebleed in the history of the television with a three episode guest stint on NO ORDINARY FAMILY starting night — very little. Or at least that’s what we took away following a fantastically candid conversation with the actress who touched upon everything from what brought her to America, her mysterious new role on NO ORDINARY FAMILY, and of course, what it’s like to be associated with the remarkable legacy that is LOST.
Despite the fact we promised ourselves we wouldn’t start off this interview with a LOST-related question, something recently happened that we simply must get your reaction to: The LOST lottery numbers…
Rebecca Mader: Were they all the exact same numbers?
They were two off!
I’m so pissed off I didn’t play those numbers! It did cross my mind and then I was in such a rush because I was on the set of NO ORDINARY FAMILY on Tuesday and we were all like, “Come on, we have to wrap and go get lottery tickets.” So me and Michael Chiklis were plowing through the scene, I ran to 7-11 and I didn’t have time. I thought about the LOST numbers that morning but I didn’t have time so I said, “Sod it,” and did a 20 dollar quick pick, which of course didn’t have anything that was remotely close to what the numbers were, and then I saw it on twitter the next day and was like, “$#*! that crossed my mind!” Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to make my own millions!
Our Top 10 TV Shows of 2010
While they may not have been the year’s most critically acclaimed or the country’s most popular, each the following shows made this TV Addict’s Top 10 of ’10 for the simple reason that each week, they left us jonesing another fix. You know those people who say “less is more?” Yeah, they’re totally wrong. As the following programs prove, too much is never enough.
Our 2010 TV Year in Review (Part I)
Worst Name For A Great New Character: Lumen Pierce? Seriously, DEXTER?
Standout Episode Of A Show Having A Mediocre Season: THE OFFICE’s outing titled “Andy’s Play” showed the series at it’s very best, which is something we haven’t seen much of this year.
Most Genre-Defying Sitcom: Zombies? Paintball apocalypse? Heartfelt emotions? One never knows what one will get when tuning into COMMUNITY… and that’s a good thing.
Guilty Pleasure We’re Not Feeling So Guilty About: Last year, GOSSIP GIRL wasn’t giving anyone much reason to talk about it. But this year — thanks to Chuck and Blair’s relationship and the addition of Katie Cassidy’s Juliet — we’re back to agreeing when Kristen Bell’s voice urges us to admit, “You know you love me!”
ABC Gets its Mid-Season Report Card
The Good: Suffice to say, “good” doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface when it comes to THE MIDDLE, BETTER WITH YOU, MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN, ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block that may in fact be laugh-for-laugh, our favorite televised two hours of the week. Also falling under the category of good are aging dramas DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, BROTHERS & SISTERS and GREY’S ANATOMY, all of which rebounded nicely after lacklustre seasons in both the viewership and more importantly, the creative departments. Meanwhile, on the reality TV front, DANCING WITH THE STARS continued to steamroll the competition on Mondays, which bring us to…
The Bad: Bristol Palin won’t be on the Spring Edition of DWST, which means ABC executives should probably brace themselves for the inevitable dip in ratings. And while we’re on the subject of disappointing ratings, new Fall offerings such as the now defunct MY GENERATION, DETROIT 1-8-7 and personal favorite NO ORDINARY FAMILY haven’t exactly lived up to the hype. And don’t even get us started on SKATING WITH THE STARS.
The Power of Subliminal Programming: How TV Changes Our Behavior
By: Tiffany Vogt
After a recent episode of BONES, I noticed for the first time how easy it is for television to influence our personal lives. In this particular episode, Dr. Temperance Brennan was chastising Booth for failing to put the toilet seat cover down. After her detailed, if not repulsive rationale, Booth was prompted to buy new toothbrushes for himself and his new girlfriend. Maybe it was only meant to be a funny reminder of how when one enters a relationship, one needs to alter some of their bachelor ways; but it was a vivid reminder of how the rest of us need to be more aware of our environments. I know I immediately tossed my old toothbrush and bought a new one which I now keep in a drawer and not in a container next to the sink. BONES actually got me to rush out and buy something I had not thought to replace. How often can we say that a TV show had such an immediate effect on us?
It was upon further reflection that I began to think back over my buying habits and how they have changed; and for the first time I noticed how subconsciously I had altered my personal behavior in direct response to what I was watching on television. In fact, over the years, many of television shows have had a subtle, subconscious influence on what I buy.

We Preview HUMAN TARGET Season 2 with Star Mark Valley
On an uncharacteristically sunny afternoon in Vancouver British Columbia, a man is found bleeding profusely from his right arm. And while normally this would be a cause for concern, there is nothing normal about this beautiful August day. Oh, and did we mention that the man bleeding is none other than Mark Valley?
“[Guest Star] Molly Parker just found out that I killed her husband and she wasn’t very happy about it,” explained the affable actor, while taking a break on location from shooting HUMAN TARGET’s second episode of the season. “I’m pretty sure she was trying to kill me, but she just winged me.”
