GLEE Recap: “Loser Like Me” and “Homecoming”
Glee is back for it’s final season. And although I’ve been very open about my dislike and criticism of Glee over the last two seasons, I didn’t hate this episode. Now, was it the best? No. Was it the worst? Not by a long shot. Let’s get to this recap shall we.
Apparently, Rachel’s television show (titled: That’s So Rachel) was a huge failure. It was a live scripted show which sounds ridiculous then we got to see some of the pilot later in the episode it was confirmed that it was ridiculous. But it seemed like a much bigger failure on the studio and writer’s part then on Rachel’s but she took a huge hit as well. Rachel goes into hiding and when she comes out, she finds out her parents are getting a divorce and selling her childhood home. [Read more…]
PARENTHOOD! EMPIRE! REVENGE! THE GOOD WIFE! THE BACHELOR! GENERAL HOSPITAL! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
Most Noble Sacrifice: Sure, we’ll miss REVENGE’s Daniel, but the fallout from his death has made this show more interesting than it’s been since Season 1.
Best Character: The moment EMPIRE’s Cookie strode out of prison, portrayer Taraji P. Henson immediately stole the show, helping make it the best pilot to hit the airwaves in years.
Best Prop: THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s Rick took down the portrait of late patriarch Stephanie and replaced it with one of his mistress, Maya. That sound you heard? Jaws hitting the floor left and right.
Most Likely To Trigger Ugly Crying: If you didn’t weep through the silent opening moments of PARENTHOOD’s 100th episode, you might not be human.
Biggest Waste Of Time: Three hours of THE BACHELOR proved that you really can get too much of a not-so-great-to-begin-with thing.
Most Unique Twist: As THE GOOD WIFE’s Cary prepared himself for a seemingly inevitable stint behind bars, he hired a consultant who advised him on everything from who to befriend to how to eat in order to avoid glass being put in his food. [Read more…]

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Shows You Should Binge-Watch on Netflix, Shomi and CraveTV Now!
It’s so easy to watch quality television these days; cable networks are providing us with groundbreaking content and in quantities we aren’t accustomed to. Though while networks did originally air the content online streaming services are rereleasing and rebranding these shows and giving them a new audience and new platform years after they’ve left our TV screens. Netflix (and Canadian competitors CraveTV and Shomi) have an immensely diverse queue of shows and genres that there is bound to be something for everyone. The best part about binging is you don’t have to wait weeks to find out what happens, you only have to wait a mere fifteen seconds (or you can impatiently start the next episode when the fifteen second countdown appears, like I do)
Case in point, these 5 Shows You Should Binge-Watch Now!
WEEDS (Netflix US, Netflix and CraveTV in Canada)
You probably know the creator Jenji Kohan by her binging masterpiece, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, but her first hit for Showtime was the one that really launched her into the powerhouse she is today. The story of a suburban widowed mother of two who turns to selling weed to earn some extra cash is wild and to see how far she goes throughout the season is intense and entertaining.
Episode To Watch: “He Taught Me How To Drive By”
30 ROCK (Netflix US, Shomi and CraveTV in Canada)
If you like Tina Fey and love to laugh till it hurts then I beg you to watch 30 ROCK. I can assure you you won’t find a smarter show, or a show that uses their guest stars better than 30 ROCK. I promise after one episode you’ll be breaking out that night cheese and binging this till you’re at the finale.
Episode To Watch: “Episode 210”
UNITED STATES OF TARA (Netflix US)
One of the most underrated shows of the last five years, the Pilot is phenomenal and Toni Collette’s portrayal of a handful of different characters is mesmerizing. Side note Brie Larson is in the show and she is such a raw talent, her ability to steal any scene she is in is remarkable and something you don’t want to miss.
Episode To Watch: “The Good Parts”
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (Netflix US, CraveTV in Canada)
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose. This show is magical and will pull at your heartstrings every chance it gets. Watch it. Love it. Listen to Coach Taylor. This show has almost too much heart (if that’s even a thing) give it a try and report back to me if you don’t like it because I will be truly surprised. The cast is beyond incredible and they all give such a stellar performance.
Episode To Watch: “Pilot”
CHUCK: (Netflix US and Canada)
I can try to write a review of this show that convinces you to watch it and tell you how hilarious, surprising, and action-packed this show is. I can try to put into words how this show completely hooked me and made me fall in love with it’s characters and completely did what a show is supposed to do. I can try to do all of these things but no matter how hard I try I will never be able to put down in words how wonderful, enchanting, and truly incredible this show really is. I started watching CHUCK because a friend had mentioned it to me, I had no idea this show would change my outlook on television and make me want to believe that there are still shows with that much heart. It was pure perfection and I truly hope we get a movie like VERONICA MARS did.
Episode To Watch: “Chuck Versus The Honeymooners”
*I picked shows that have been off the air for a couple of years. (BREAKING BAD and ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK are obviously binge worthy shows. Trust me, I get it)

TV Year In Review: Our Top 10 Scenes from 2014
It’s the end of 2014 so you will start to see many lists about the best and worst of television. I love these lists (example A being that I’m writing one) but often times the lists include scenes or shows that were on the last television season. So, in the interest of being different my list of the top 10 scenes of 2014 will only include scenes from the first half of the 2014 – 2015 network season (meaning anything before and including mid season finales are eligible).

Season Finale Review: THE AFFAIR Goes Out Without a Bang
During their brief separation, Helen Solloway referred to her morally-questionable husband as a potential sociopath. Was she wrong?
In last night’s 10th installment of “The Affair,” Noah’s side of things never felt more fantastical. For months, he bedded beautiful women, then once he was caught, he used his time away from work to finish his book. Upon landing his six-figure deal, Helen begged him to come back. Later, it was he who played victim as he faced Cole’s loaded gun.
With Noah preoccupied back in the city, Alison was suddenly ready to make amends with Athena, if only to temporarily get away from the husband that reminded her of Gabriel, and from an already strained relationship with her lover. In her retelling of events, Cole was ready to kill Noah, or Noah’s family, or himself, without Noah having ever chased Scotty into the backyard. In present-day, Noah was arrested, presumably for Scotty’s murder, and Alison promised she’d get him out of it. Was that why her summation of the day’s events failed to include Noah and Scotty’s encounter, or is there something else we’re missing here entirely?
Last night’s season finale left its audience with many unanswered questions, but few of which have driven my interest in this thought-provoking character drama. I have very little empathy for Noah or Alison, but those characters, and their relationship, are why I’m watching “The Affair” in the first place. Everything else – including equally mesmerizing performances by Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson – is secondary. The Showtime drama is at its best when it centers in on the formerly secret tryst, and its ramifications on the marriages it’s destroying. The show is at its worst when it navigates away from that, and more towards tertiary characters like Whitney, and the ongoing statutory rape/pregnancy story line with Scotty.
Last week, Ruth Wilson gave an impeccable performance during Alison’s breakdown at the pediatrician’s office, and again when her character contemplated suicide in the near-arctic waves. This week, Jackson shined in both Noah and Alison’s vastly different retellings of the day the Solloways went to pick up Whitney. Both accounts showed Cole at his most manic state since the pilot, a character who has since lost everything else that mattered to him most.
I don’t regret listing “The Affair” high up on my list of 2014’s biggest televisual accomplishments, but the show still hasn’t figured out what it wants to be in a world where Noah and Alison’s relationship is no longer forbidden. The last two episodes have embraced more outlandish story elements (Alison’s one-night stand with Oscar, the reveal that Helen’s mother had a P.I. following Noah for four months), the kind I wouldn’t have expected to come from the show “The Affair” was trying to be in its earliest episodes, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. As long as its writers are able to make clear that they’re attempting to do nothing more than create a can’t-miss prime time soap, I will gladly continue to watch the misadventures of these self-absorbed white people. I can’t, however, keep watching a show that jumps back and forth between wanting to be a complex television narrative, and just another overly-complicated tale of egotistical, misguided souls that could only truly exist in a soap-operatic world. The show just doesn’t work when it tries to be both of those things.
Despite its faults, and one mediocre cliffhanger, I look forward to seeing what comes of season two, and seeing if the show can overcome its end-of-the-season identity crisis.
Side notes:
• I really enjoyed what little Geoffrey Owens (f.k.a. Elvin Tibideaux, “The Cosby Show”) was given to do in those rubber room scenes, but does anyone believe for one minute that he wrote Noah a note telling him that he was his hero? C’mon now!
• Det. Jeffries has been lying about having a wife and kids this entire time. The real ‘babe’ in his life goes by the name of Steve.
• the first time, Noah and Alison’s recollections featured memories that have previously only been shown in the other person’s retelling of events. Executive producer Sarah Treem spoke with Alan Sepinwall about that, and her response provides insight into Noah and Alison’s psyches, and what might change from a storytelling perspective in season two.
• ICYMI, write-ups on episodes one, two, three, four, five, six and seven, and a teensy bit on episode eight.
