Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Last week was quite a week, wasn’t it? CBS really gave me the highs, the renewal of How I Met Your Mother, and lows, the sudden and shocking cancellation of Jericho. Everything else was about as expected. theTVaddict Sizes Up the CW’s New Shows

Who’d have thought that a project called GOSSIP GIRL would quickly become the least talked about new series on the CW’s fall 2007 slate. While the show, from OC creator Josh Schwartz definitely looks to be a winner — after-all, who doesn’t love glitzy New York socialites and OC levels of melodrama — the real talked about shows were some of the CW’s more offbeat and original offerings.

Namely, ALIENS IN AMERICA. Now I know what you’re thinking — EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS aside, ‘funny’ and the CW are two words that don’t generally go together. Well, if the reaction from the UpFront audience was any indication, the CW may have its first bona-fide comedic hit on its hands (translation: people actually laughed).

ALIENS IN AMERICA tells the story of Justin Tolchuk, a sensitive 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare that is high school. Realizing that her son needs a friend, Justin’s mom signs the family up for the school’s international student exchange program. Needless to say, if BORAT taught us anything, it’s that America loves its foreigners. Come fall 2007, the next big CW star is going to be a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslin named Raja.

When it came down to what AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL’s Tyra Bank dubbed “the battle of the accents,” did anyone else get the distinct impression that the show purposely set out to crown a bilingual girl? Heck, both Jaslene and Natasha addressed the panel in their native tongues. Frankly, we’d have rather seen Whitney – aka the vivacious, plus-size model – declared the winner. If Tyra and company were truly looking to send a positive message – especially in an age when the modeling industry is being critiqued for sending rail-thin waifs down the runway – “eat something” wouldn’t have been a bad one to start with.

Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? The past two episodes of HEROES have felt like little more than filler, leaving us practically screaming at the screen, “Yes, yes, we know! Get to the big boom already!” And perhaps that’s part of the problem: For far too long, we’ve known what the finale would involve, leaving us to impatiently await its arrival. LOST, on the other hand – which took a lot of heat for similarly dull episodes earlier this year – has bounced back with killer episodes which are actually propelling the story toward its season-ending cliffhanger. Seeing as HEROES is only in its first season and seems already to be padding its storytelling, should viewers be concerned? And given its season-long hype, doesn’t it seem safe to say that if next Monday’s episode of HEROES isn’t one of the most jaw-dropping finales of all time, the show could suffer a summer-long backlash that might be hard to rebound from?

As amazing as Jacklyn Smith looks, what, exactly, is her purpose on Bravo’s SHEAR GENIUS? Sally Hershberger – inventor of a hairstyle made famous by Meg Ryan – has actual experience, and Rene Fris – who manages to be both appealing and freakish at the exact same time – serves as mentor to the would-be stylists. As far as we can tell, Jacklyn’s soul purpose has been to put someone beloved by TV audiences front and center. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Have you caught AMERICAN IDOL alum Constantine Maroulis stint on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL? Somehow, what passed for “smoldering” when the rocker took to the reality show’s stage is coming off as stalkerish and creepy on the soap. But given the somewhat campy nature of B&B – a show on which one woman has married a family patriarch and both of his sons as well as slept with not one but two of her daughter’s lovers – it somehow works.

Amrie’s Take on TV: UpFront Preview (Part 2)

So, NBC threw out some shockers (at least FNL wasn’t cancelled. Sure, Friday at 10 is almost the kiss of death, but it’s fabulous, so yay!). With ABC set to change up their schedule and send some surprises our way, let’s see what’s coming for CBS, The CW, and FOX in the coming days!

CBS:

What do we not need to worry about?
Big Brother, Survivor – CBS isn’t big on the early renewals.

What shows are looking good for renewal, but haven’t gotten there yet?
48 Hours, 60 Minutes, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, Ghost Whisperer, NCIS (especially now that Bellisario stepped down), Numb3rs, Rules of Engagement (who would have thought?), Shark, Two and a Half Men (really?), Without a Trace

What shows are riding that bubble?
The Amazing Race (not so much because ratings are down, but because they might not have a spot for it on the schedule right away), The Class (I would be sad to see it go…it got better at the end), How I Met Your Mother (seriously? I can’t imagine this being gone already), Jericho (I’ll be super upset if this is gone!!!), The New Adventures of Old Christine (I’m thinking it’s between HIMYM and Christine for the comedy spot…hopefully HIMYM stays), The Unit (no bad buzz here, but it’s probably the least “on the radar” procedural.

What should we prepare to say goodbye to, officially?
Armed and Famous, Close to Home (they never should have killed off Christian Kane’s character), Gameshow Marathon, Rock Star (if you hear nothing about it, chances are they aren’t working on it)

What shows did they already can?
3 Lbs (which is a shame, because I like Stanley Tucci), The Kind of Queens, Smith, Waterfront (I gotta be honest, I don’t remember this show even starting….)

What is still to come?
Creature Comforts and Pirate Master look to be interesting shows – we’ll see how they do.

Bottom line?
CBS has too many hits to know what to do with. To even consider getting rid of HIMYM or Jericho, it’s pure insanity. The latest talks point to neither of them getting the boot, but the fact that they aren’t incredibly safe just shows that CBS is doing really well and almost doesn’t know where to go from here.

Sunday is a big day AGAIN for 7th Heaven as it’s has its series finale on the CW at 8/7c. (For real this time! They even had a FUNERAL for it at a cemetery. LOL) The whole family, well, the ones left on the show anyway, go away on a trip across America via RV. Does Ruthie choose Martin or T-bone? It’s the biggest question EVAR on tv! 😉

Tonight is the season finale of Reno 911 on Comedy Central at 10:30/9:30c. Dangle accepts a wedding proposition from his ex-wife’s husband.

It’s also the 3 hour season finale and reunion show for Survivor on CBS at 8/7c. The five remaining contestants compete for the $1 million prize. Go Yao & Earl! 😀

2007 May UpFront Rumour Roundup

Next week in New York, the ‘big five’ (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX and the CW) will announce their Fall ’07 television lineups to advertisers. From May 14 -18, network presidents will pull out all the stops (including a song-and-dance number by UGLY BETTY’s Marc, Amanda and Justin) to impress Madison Ave. with a slate of new shows guaranteed to save television from the evils of the internet, xbox and you know, the outside world.

With that in mind, we at theTVaddict.com thought we’d share some of the rumors that have floated across our desk up here in TV Addict Central (think: the Batcave).

THE CW is incredibly high on Josh Schwartz’s (THE OC) latest project GOSSIP GIRL. So much so that we’d be shocked if it didn’t make the fall schedule with a possible time-slot being Tuesday at 8PM. (Hmmm, I wonder what other female-centric show the CW could pair GOSSIP GIRL with?)

In spite of the mixed reaction, ABC still has high hopes for Shonda Rhimes untitled GREY’S spin-off. Expect Addison to show up on the alphabet’s fall schedule, with possible air dates including Sunday and Monday nights.

NBC, the network in need of the most serious overhaul is hoping the BIONIC WOMAN flexes some ratings muscle. Execs feel that the re-imagination of the 70’s action drama may be the ideal companion for their freshman break-out hit HEROES.

FOX has already committed thirteen episodes to the Kelsey Grammer/ Patricia Heaton comedy BACK TO YOU (formerly ACTION NEWS) and is looking positively towards their own big-budget action vehicle the SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. CHRONICLES stars Lena Headey and Thomas Dekker (Zach from HEROES) and follows the two as the kick-butt mother must protect her 15-year old son John Conner from internet speculation that he may be gay, who may be humanity’s last hope for survival.

Finally there’s CBS, the network with the least holes in its schedule. Expect Jimmy Smits to make a return to television with LOS DUQUES — the tale of a multi-generational Latin American family in the rum business — thus ending our dreams of seeing THE WEST WING: THE NEXT GENERATION

TV Talkback: BROTHERS & SISTERS

Two addicts. One conversation.  Let the games begin!

CouchTater: Wouldn’t BROTHERS & SISTERS have gotten a lot more mileage out of the off-screen kiss between Walker-clan newbie Rebecca and her brother-in-law Joe by having him deny the accusation or perhaps say that she’d been the one to kiss him? What could have been an intriguing “he said/she said” plot forcing the family to take sides and reverberating for weeks to come was instead reduced to an easily-digestable morsel. But perhaps that’s part and parcel of this show’s bigger problem: It’s seeming determination to burn through three years worth of storyline in a single season. Are our collective attention spans so short that we wouldn’t be able to make it until season two without meeting Holly and William’s daughter? How about giving Balthazar Getty’s character a little airtime instead of introducing new characters every few episodes? Why ditch Nora’s relationship with the charming handyman played by Treat Williams in favor of having her get involved with the smarmy teacher? B&S needs to slow down and let us enjoy the ride.

TheTVAddict: “Are our collective attention spans so short that we wouldn’t be able to make it until season two without meeting Holly and William’s daughter?” In a word — Yes. The unfortunate reality of modern-day television is that viewers all too often have demonstrated their willingness to move onto something new when a series fails to give them answers. (See: LOST losing five million viewers this season).

The introduction of Rebecca not only brought the remarkable Emily VanCamp back to television, its propelled B&S from a good show to a potentially great one. Since her arrival on the scene, the ‘other’ Walker has helped tear apart a marriage, pit brother against brother and create more drama than a month of alcohol-fueled game nights. Sure, the whole “he said/she said” thing sounds intriguing — but I’ll take an awkward weekend at the Vineyard any day. Who didn’t get chills listening to Holly’s final warning to Nora: “You don’t want my daughter living in your house!”

I quit watching this season a few weeks in because I had read that M&C and D&K were 2 of the final 3 teams and I can’t stand either team. So I didn’t care who won.
