The TV Addict Reports from the Global TV UpFront

It’s events like this that make theTVaddict.com worth the effort. Yes, you heard me. Watching television is serious ‘work’ and today was no exception. This morning, the TV Addict reported live from the 2007 GLOBAL TV UpFront, and believe you me, it was no treat. Especially when I had to suppress an audible groan when HEROES stars Masi Oka and Adrian Pasdar were asked — no doubt the millionth time — who their personal hero was!

Okay, who am I kidding? Stupid questions aside, the Global TV UpFront were as exciting as one would imagine. After-all, it’s not often that I get to sit front row and question HEROES stars Masi Oka and Adrian Pasdar, drink coffee while congratulating BROTHERS & SISTERS star Balthazar Getty on all his success and get the opportunity to chat with the hardest working guy in show-business — Ryan Seacrest.

Now onto the festivities.

The event started off with a Q&A featuring HEROES stars Masi Oka (Hiro Nakamura) and Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli). Not surprisingly, Pasdar was tight-lipped on what fans can expect come season two explaining, “When the show first started, the network wanted us to talk to anyone who wanted to talk to us. But now that we’re a hit, we can’t say anything.”

Television Critics Association Announces 2007 Award Nominees

Yesterday, The Television Critics Association unveiled its 2007 TCA Award nominations. Unlike that other organization that will remain nameless (rhymes with ‘semis’), the television critics do it right. Check out the nominees below (the TV Addict’s favourites are in bold).

Jenny’s This Week on TV

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! What a week! Jericho fans are still on a roll, having sent (as of just after midnight on Friday night) nearly 36,000 pounds of nuts to CBS and raised over $10,000 for Greensburg, Kansas. Still crossing my fingers that a miracle will happen and that and Veronica Mars will be picked up! lol Let’s see what up in reality this week, shall we? *sigh*


SUNDAY

Sunday is the series premiere of a new show on Lifetime called Army Wives. It’s about the struggles, dreams and friendships of a diverse group of women — and one man — living with their spouses and families on an active army post and the pressures and traditions of the military on those who are left behind while their partners serve their country. It stars Kim Delaney (NYPD Blue, Sally Pressman (Shark), Brigid Brannagh (Over There), Brian McNamara (The OC), Sterling K. Brown (the hysterical short-lived Starved), Wendy Davis (Commander-in-Chief), Drew Fuller (Charmed) & the terrific Catherine Bell (JAG). It’s a great, strong cast and my best friend’s husband is about to leave to go over to Iraq, so this one kind of hits close to home for me. It airs at 10/9c.

If you are a Food Network fan, the new season of The Next Food Network Star with 2 episodes starting at 9/8c. In these first 2 episodes, the eleven finalists meet for the first time, present an original dish to the selection committee, decorate a cake and cater a wedding.

If you are lucky like me and have more channels than you know what to do with, you should check and see if you get AmericanLife TV. Starting tonight and every Sunday night at 11/10c, they are airing 3 classic dramas from the premiere episode of each: St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues & L.A. Law. Great News for Canadian KYLE XY Fans

If you live in Canada and are a fan of the series KYLE XY today is your lucky day. This afternoon, ABC announced that much like last summer, the alphabet network will be filling its summer schedule with repurposed episodes of the hit ABC Family series.

Season two, which premieres on Monday June 11 on ABC Family will re-air four days later on ABC (Friday June 15 at 8PM). So why is this good news for Canadians? Well, as you may or may not know, the unfortunate reality is that we (Canadians!) don’t get ABC Family. Thus ABC is our only hope for discovering the ‘secrets’ of KYLE XY.

THE VIEW without ROSIE

For those of you stuck in your office (without a television — paging Amnesty International), I thought I’d take a moment to update you all on this morning’s first installment of THE VIEW minus ROSIE.

Fourteen minutes in, I’m already bored. Barbara Walters is sitting in Rosie’s chair, and Whoopi Goldberg is special guest host (or is it Rosie replacement?). Not surprisingly, the opening minutes were dedicated to Barbara and Elizabeth talking about how much Rosie will be missed and that the two of them have been affectionately emailing Rosie all weekend. Translation: please don’t stop tuning in to the show because Rosie’s gone.

Not surprisingly, the Queen of Nice has a different take on the controversy. “I haven’t spoken to her [Elizabeth], and I think it’s just as well” said Rosie on her video blog at Rosie.com. “I wrote her an e-mail, and she wrote me back, and there you have it.”

What’s more, Rosie compared her stint on THE VIEW to being “just like a foster kid for a year … I didn’t really fit into the family and now it’s time for the foster kid to go back home.”

And now on to Lindsay Lohan’s ‘problems’…. cue channel change now.

Amrie’s Take on [Summer] TV

It is that summer time of year when the weather gets sunny and hot, and you find any reason you can to curl up in the air conditioning at night to keep you sane.

Here’s a rundown of the 10 shows I’m looking forward to most this summer (I think the list could go to 20 or 25 shows, because this summer looks amazing with new shows and returning old shows, but I’ll keep it to 10, I promise!).

1. So You Think You Can Dance?, Season 3 (Started May 24, goes through the summer, FOX)
Easily one of my favorite reality TV shows…I love Cat Deeley’s fashion sense, Nigel and Mary and their crazy back and forth. I love how great some of these dancers truly are. For some reason, this show doesn’t bother me nearly as much as all of the other “find the best in America” shows. Since they come out saying “America’s favorite dancer” they avoid the negative stigma that goes along with a show when a horrible singer/dancer/something keeps getting votes because they’re loved. If a crappy dancer gets through, but America loves them, it’s because they’re the favorite, not the best. I like that attitude!

2. Weeds, Season 3 (Starts August 13, Showtime)
This is without a doubt the one scripted show that I am most looking forward to this summer. When we last left Nancy, our resident neighborhood pot dealer, she was truly in a mess, with her grow house raided, the pot with her son Silas, and various gun toting thugs in her kitchen. I cannot wait to see where Season 3 takes this batch of crazies. Now that Celia’s hubby has been upped to regular status, that should be exciting. Plus, I’d be lying a little bit if I said that the idea of MK Olsen playing a bible thumping wild child girlfriend to Silas didn’t make me smile!

3. Eureka, Season 2 (Starts July 10, SCIFI)
I love Colin Ferguson. I think he was the only really memorable thing about the horrid American version of Coupling a few years back. I love him so dearly on this quirky Science Fiction drama. The whole town of Eureka entertains me, and I can’t wait to see how Season 2 unfolds!

Jenny’s This Week on TV

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Not a ton of new tv on this week. A few finales, a few premieres, a few ho-hum days. The summer season hasn’t kicked off fully yet and last season is pretty much over, so not a lot going on. Take what you can get, though! 🙂 I just traded in one of my 2 DVR’s for another one with a bigger hard drive. So I am set for the summer season and for next Fall! Yay!

What is Wrong with Fox?

You’ve all been there, most of you more than once. You know what I’m talking about. The love that you cherished, that you connected with the moment you met. The love to which you were so attached — and looked forward to seeing every week. Things seemed good, and then before you knew what happened, somebody came and took your love away from you. Never to be seen again.

If you were ever a devoted watcher of one of the many cancelled Fox shows, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Amongst TV-lovers, Fox has developed a notorious reputation for being a network that often screws over some of its best shows. Their methods include insufficient promotion, changing a show’s time slot so often that nobody knows when it’s on, and a general impatience to let a show find its groove and/or audience. The end result? Fox either kills its children slowly and painfully (Arrested Development) or quickly and immediately (Wonderfalls). Want an idea of how bad Fox is? Allow Seth McFarlane — whose Family Guy was also once cancelled — to enlighten you.

With the recent news that Fox has yet again effectively killed another show before it even really got started (their most recent victim being Drive), I found myself wondering: what the heck is wrong with Fox?

Amrie’s Take on TV: The Season in Review

Can’t believe a year went by so fast…

Wow. The past 12 months have flown by. Who remembers last year at this time when my first two columns with thetvaddict.com were all about the upfronts and summer TV and trying to avoid the waiting between a really good 2005-2006 season and what I hoped would be a really good 2006-2007 season? Seems like just yesterday I was anxiously awaiting the new fall shows (Jericho and Friday Night Lights were mere glimmers in the distant future at that point), and I couldn’t wait to find out what was in that damn briefcase on Veronica Mars!

Cut to May, 2007. I’m here, trying to recover from a rocky week of Upfronts filled with amazing pickups (Friday Night Lights is seriously one of the very best shows ever made and the fact that I’ll get to see Kenneth the page on a week to week basis next year on 30 Rock makes me very, very happy) and gut wrenching cancellations (I’ll miss you Veronica Mars and seriously, how can we go on without closure to that Jericho story [more on Jericho if you read all the way through]).

What better time than now to talk about my favorite shows from this season and what shows need to do better next year if they intend to keep me as a viewer!

FAVORITES

Bones – I really thought that this show hit its stride this season and worked as a really seamless ensemble comedy/drama about the inner workings of a forensic anthropologist, her team, and her FBI agent. The cast chemistry is phenomenal, and I honestly cannot wait to see what happens next year!

Channel Surfing: Weekend Edition

Was anyone else genuinely surprised by last night’s episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES? And no, we’re not referring to that disturbing final scene, or the fact that Susan and Mike FINALLY tied the knot. We’re talking about the fact that Victor Lang’s entire Gubernatorial campaign strategy revolves around marrying Gabby in order to court the Latino vote. Latino vote? In Wisteria Lane? Okay, perhaps we’re missing something, but as a loyal DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES viewers, we’re pretty confident in saying that Gabriel is the only Latino woman we’ve ever seen on Wisteria Lane (also known as the “Whitest City in America”). Mayor Lang, a little unsolicited campaign advice if we may: considering changing your strategy before September ’07.

Greg Berlanti’s fond of saying that the best season finales call back to a moment from the show’s season premiere. Not surprisingly, last night’s season ender of BROTHERS & SISTERS did not disappoint, as this TV addict gleefully watched the entire Walker clan (Holy and Rebecca included) jump into the family pool fully clothed. A stark contrast to the show’s series premiere, when the Walker clan surrounded the pool for an entirely different reason — the death of patriarch William Walker. Who’d have thought that almost a year later, William’s death would lead to an even stronger Walker family? So in the traditional Walker way, please join theTVaddict in raising a virtual glass. Cheers to our newest favorite television family. Thanks for the laughter, memories and endless of bottles of Chardonnay. See you in September.

Did anyone else find Zach Braff’s stint as SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE host incredibly disappointing? Memo to Zach, we get it. GARDEN STATE made you an indie star, your music tastes are impeccable, and you have a great voice (yes, the SCRUBS musical episode is still saved on my PVR). But here’s the thing. SNL isn’t an informercial for everything Zach (he sings! he directs!). Amidst all the shameless self promotion on Saturday’s season finale you forgot the most important rule of SNL — BE FUNNY. Career advice if we may, don’t quit your day job.
