SUNDAY

Sunday is the season finale of 3 shows, starting off with the 35-minute finale of Entourage on HBO at 10/9c. The guys try to sell ”Medellin” at Cannes; drama benefits from the overseas popularity of ”Viking Quest.”

Also on at 10/9c on E! is the season finale of The Girls Next Door. It’s the Playmate of the Year Luncheon. What in the world will happen now?

Finally, tonight is the 40-minute season finale of Flight of the Conchords on HBO at 10:35/9:35c. Murray forces a bongo-playing band member on Bret and Jemaine.

10 Questions with DEGRASSI Actress Nina Dobrev

TheTVaddict.com will go to almost any length to score an interview. So when we heard DEGRASSI star Nina Dobrev was in our neighbourhood filming a movie. We decided there was only one thing we could use to attract her attention in the hopes of scoring an interview.

Now I know what you’re thinking. Clearly you utilized your dashing Brad-Pittesque good looks? Thanks, but there’s where you’d be wrong. We utilized the only sure fire weapon at our disposal. The one weapon in our arsenal guaranteed to attract the opposite sex. Enter the TV Addict’s adorable dog MAC.

The moment we walked by, Nina was not surprisingly hooked. And lucky for us, kind enough to take a few minutes out of her busy shooting schedule to answer a few questions (As long as she got to play with Mac after!)

Were you a fan of DEGRASSI before you auditioned for the show?
Nina Dobrev: I was of course familiar with the show and heard all the hype, but I didn’t really watch it because I didn’t have the time. Actually I am not the biggest TV person, I’m really into school, sports and gymnastics.

When you were cast on the show, did you immediately go rent the DVD’s to catch up?
Yeah, when I got the role I literally borrowed seasons one through five and watched them all back-to-back within a month or two.

And your favorite character was?
Jake Epstein.

It must have been nerve-wracking joining such an established show. How nervous were you?
As nervous as you can get. Meeting new people, making a good first impression, seeing the studio. It was strange. Just realizing that this one studio has everything — the mall, houses, the school.

SUNDAY

Sunday is the season finale of Army Wives on Lifetime at 10/9c. After a large amount of munitions have been stolen off the premises, Michael believes the post is a terrorist threat; Michael orders Frank, Trevor and Chase to deploy immediately.

It’s also the season finale of Big Love on HBO at 9/8c. An unexpected guest shocks the Henricksons; Sarah and Heather try to get Ben to change direction; Margene lobbies for more control in the family.

Finally, tonight is the final 2 episodes of The Kill Point on Spike TV at 9/8c and 10/9c. Mr. Rabbit tries to take advantage of Wolf’s vulnerability after one of his men is compromised. Horst moves forwards with plans for a breach. Did anyone watch this? I have all the first 6 recorded and will record these 2 as well. Since I love both the leads, I can’t wait to have a marathon & watch it! 😀

Amrie’s Take on TV: GREEK

greekI didn’t join a sorority when I was in college.

I didn’t have friends in a fraternity when I was in college.

I know nothing about the Greek system, besides what I’ve learned on TV.

And I’m completely and utterly addicted to ABC Family’s other Monday night offering, Greek! Here is just a sample of the reasons this show has gotten me hooked!

1. Spencer Grammer as Casey Cartwright – I wasn’t sold on the idea of Kelsey’s daughter playing a prominent role in this series. Even after watching the first episode of the series, I didn’t find her able to hold my interest. But as the episodes continued, I’ve found that I love the ability she has to alternate between teenager-in-love and bitchy-sorority-queen. She’s funny. She’s snobby. She’s fabulous.

2. Cappy – To quote a fellow Greek lover (my sister Mary, hey there!) – He’s the bad guy that every girl secretly loves, because he’s also a good guy. There is something so charming about Scott Foster’s approach to this drunk, cliché of a frat boy. He’s cute, he’s funny, and I have to admit, I would choose Cappy over Jason-Dohring-lite Evan (Jake McDorman) in a heartbeat.

3. Rusty “Spitter” Cartwright – he is just your stereotypical engineering nerd with a heart of gold! He seems to unintentionally unaware of what’s happening around him, and he just wants to prove that he can handle himself in the Greek System. I also love the relationship that he has with his sister Casey. They’re not best friends. They tolerate each other, and they give each other great advice.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 Premieres Tonight [Finally]

At this moment, millions of phone conversations across the country are taking place. Odds are, more than a few of them sound like this:

GUY #1: Dude, Waz Up! [Yes, people still say that!] We checking out SUPERBAD tonight? It’s getting really great reviews. Michael Cera is DA BOMB! I can’t believe FOX was so dumb to cancel ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT… and FIREFLY and WONDERFALLS [okay, so that last part I just made up]

GUY #2: I totally want to see SUPERBAD! Love Michael Cera. But I’ve already got plans tonight.

GUY #1: Are you frakkin’ kidding me? Dude, we’ve been talking about this movie for weeks.

Cue background music: “We’re all in this together….”

GUY #2: Sorry man, I know. But I’ve got plans… umm… it’s a family thing.

More background music: “Na na na yeah.. You Are the Music In Me…”

GUY #1: Dude… is that HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL playing in the background?

GUY #2: Umm… errr… wait a second? How do you know this is HIGH SCHOOL MUSCIAL?

GUY #1: Umm… Okay fine… I’ll be over at 8PM

GUY #1: Make it 6, we’re watching HSM 1 first.

There’s no point in hiding folks, let’s face it, everybody’s doing it! Young, old, guy, girl — you know where you’ll be tonight. In front of your TV, popcorn in hand, lyrics in the other. Disney’s Phenomenon HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 finally premieres, and if you’re anything like this TV Addict, you already know half the words. Tonight at 8PM on the Disney Channel in the US, Family Channel in Canada — we’re all in this together.

With Summer TV this Good, Who Needs Fall?

With the new fall television season virtually upon us, this TV Addict has one thing to say — who cares! Okay, so that probably wasn’t the statement you’d expected coming from a guy who spends so much time watching TV his license plate proudly shouts ‘TVADDICT’ [see pic!], but the fact of the matter is that cable television — for the first time ever — has done a remarkable job of filling the usual summer void.

From DAMAGES to MAD MEN and everything in between, July and August television was almost as exciting as May sweeps. Wish LAW & ORDER were more interesting? You needn’t look any further than THE CLOSER. Who needs DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES when you’ve got ARMY WIVES. Looking for family fun? ABC Family gave us KYLE XY and GREEK. Miss the confusion of LOST? Luckily [or not so much depending on your point of view] HBO gave us JOHN FROM CINCINNATI. Quite literally there was something for everyone, including an endless stream of reality television for those of us who are still going through Sanjaya withdrawal.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re still counting down the days until the Fall Season officially starts! [JIM and PAM OMG!] But we really did want to take an opportunity to pat the cable nets on the back. They’ve certainly raised the bar on summer fare. Here’s hoping ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and the CW follow suit this fall.

CALIFORNICATION: Duchovny Returns to TV in Style

There’s only two things you need to know about Showtime’s new series CALIFORNICATION. David Duchovny completely steps out of Fox Mulder’s shadow, and the show itself is straight from the HBO playbook (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Duchovny’s return to television has everything we’ve come to expect from a cable series. A dysfunctional family, gratuitous nudity, an endless supply of drugs and alcohol and what’s now become the obligatory casting of a SEX IN THE CITY alumni — in this case, Evan Handler who plays Duchovny’s literary agent.

Yet after watching the series premiere, one can’t exactly fault Duchovny’s character Hank Moody for having somewhat of a personal meltdown. After-all, how else would you respond if you just just discovered that your ex-wife (Natascha McElhone) was getting remarried, your career options have whittled down to an offer to write a blog and your one hit novel God Hates Us All has been unceremoniously adapted into a insipid Hollywood romance starring none other than ‘Tom and Katie’?

Sounds depressing, sure — but rest assured CALIFORNICATION is no JOHN FROM CINCINNATI. Duchovny perfectly encapsulates the down-on-his-luck Hollywood writer, quite possibly because he knows the feeling. It’s been years since his own hit show was cancelled, yet with CALIFORNICATION, he’s just now stepping out of the shadow of his most infamous alter-ego Fox Mulder.

The question of course remains, will Hank Moody be able to do the same? Get both his life and career back on track. Honestly, we have no idea — but we’re certainly going to enjoy watching him try.

CALIFORNICATION premieres tonight on Showtime at 10:30PM (est). Canadians can catch it on TMN at 9PM.

TheTVaddict.com Interview: FLASH GORDON’S Karen Cliche

The summer of interviews continued this week as I got some time to chat with the disarmingly beautiful and incredibly down to earth Karen Cliche (pronounced CLEESH), who plays Baylin on Sci-Fi’s newest action adventure series, FLASH GORDON. She had so much great stuff to say about her cast, her character, her support for women’s issues, and her love for a certain classic TV show.

Amrie: Hey Karen – we’re so excited about the premiere of Flash Gordon!
Karen: There’s a lot of excitement buzzing. It’s so cool.

What about Flash Gordon made you want about to be a part of it? Had you seen a script?
Actually I knew nothing about it. I had heard about it through the years, but I didn’t know much about Flash Gordon in general. I wasn’t a huge fan but then my agent brought it up. I knew one of the head writers, James Thorpe, who had written on a couple of the series I had done. He had put in a good word for me so when the role came out, when I auditioned, I just loved it…a lot of the roles I’ve played, I’ve played a man, I’ve played a mutant, I’ve played a vampire….when the opportunity came to play the alien, the physicality to her, she was a tough girl, strong woman. That’s just ideal for me. I really wanted to play her. I thought, what a challenge to play an alien bounty hunter from Mongo. Who gets the opportunity to play this? I was very excited about it.

What does the viewer need to know about Baylin going in?
In the pilot, I come in the last 10-15 minutes. You’re introduced to Baylin in a very in your face, strong kind of way. She comes to Earth on an assignment from Ming to get Aura back to Mongo. She doesn’t care about Earth. She ends up stuck on Earth and befriends Flash and becomes part of their team and so she’s just a really strong independent, unapologetically strong woman. It’s how she is, not because it’s a put on or she tries to be. It’s just because that’s the way that she is. Her parents died when she was very young. She’s been on her own for a long time. She’s been self sufficient her whole life. When she is confident and strong and independent, she’s not trying to be. That’s the way she’s known how to survive all her live. When you’re introduced to Baylin, it’s like a kick ass tough girl and then throughout the episode, you get to feel a little more about her. She sort of has a sense of humor, I think. Maybe she’s funny because of her mannerisms. She doesn’t really know how to be politically correct. You learn more about her throughout. We just shot an episode, 8 or 9, you really find out what it is that happened to her in her life. I think people will really appreciate finding that out about her and it will give her a whole other level. She doesn’t breakdown. It doesn’t destroy her. You just understand her a little bit more. It just makes you love her even more. People are going to love her because she’s just this strong kick ass woman, but then once you learn a little more about her life story, it adds a whole other element to her.
