Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Whew, what a week last week was! Like last week, I’ll highlight the new shows and everything else will be in the list, cause otherwise, this will be 10 pages long! lol So let’s get started!

SUNDAY

Sunday has no series premieres but there are quite a few season premieres as well as a couple of season finales.

First up is the season finale of Rock of Love with Bret Michaels on VH1 at 9/8c. The last two women go to Cabo San Lucas before Bret makes his final choice.

Also tonight is the season finale of Sunset Tan on E! at 10:30/9:30c. A party gets the Olly Girls fired; Erin replaces Janelle, who is on probation for her antics.

You Be the Critic: Wednesday Night

With this TV Addict desperately scrambling to catch up on my television viewing after returning from Los Angeles [LOVED HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER! Was anyone else disgusted by HEROES painfully awkward Nissan product placement?] I leave it to you, my fellow TV Addicts to point me in the right direction.

PRIVATE PRACTICE, DIRTY SEXY MONEY, BIONIC WOMAN and LIFE — What did you think? Did they accomplish a pilot’s most important [and only] goal — get you wondering what’s next? Will you be tuning in next week? Post away with your thoughts.

A quick note though with regards to DIRTY SEXY MONEY, which I simply had to check out even in my jet-lagged exhausted state. Is it just me, or are the Darling Family just a drunker, meaner, less like-able version of ABC’s other family on BROTHERS & SISTERS — The Walker Family?

Channel Surfing with C.T.

“Sugar is the new oil,” proclaimed the ads for CBS’ new series CANE, and by the end of Tuesday night’s episode, I couldn’t help thinking the network was trying darn hard to recreate one of the biggest hits in their broadcast history, DALLAS. Maybe they were inspired when the producers of the seemingly-cursed big-screen adaptation of that show cast J-Lo as Sue Ellen. Here, we get Jimmy Smits (Alex) stepping into the Bobby role, Nestor Carbonell’s Frank a JR in the making, and Rita Moreno (Amalia) filling in for Miss Ellie. Where the Ewings had a patriarch with the nickname Jock, here we get Hector Elizondo’s Pancho. The biggest problem with the pilot was how many characters and storylines were thrown into the mix in the first hour. Past vendettas, a rival family (headed by Ken Howard), ethenol, young love… you name it, CANE threw it into the mix. And for the most part, it worked, although what feels like an attempt to be all things to all people may wind up frustrating viewers who get what they came for, but feel stuck with the rest. The cast is uniformly excellent, with Eddie Matos (perhaps best known for his stint on the soap PORT CHARLES) an attention-grabbing star on the rise and Smits a commanding presence who gives the show its focal point. For now, I’ll keep watching in the hope that the show gives into its baser instincts and becomes a full-fledged guilty pleasure.

Who gets drunk and tries to pass themself off as sober… when dealing with DR. PHIL? Seriously! It’s trainwrecks like the crew currently being focused on during the current season of Man Camp that keep me coming back for more, no matter how annoyed I can sometimes get with Phil’s self-promoting (“Have you read my book Family First?”), ratings-driven schlock.

Quick, someone tell me one storyline you’re currently enjoying on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS? The death of yet another charcter we didn’t really care about (Ji Min)? The least interesting political scandal ever? InstaJew Brad? This show is going down faster than a groupie on a rock star. Which just makes it all the sweeter that THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL continues to give fired Y&R star Eileen Davidson — who brought her character, Ashley, from one soap to the other — great story. And I’d rather watch Heather Tom play Katie on B&B (lovin’ her and Thorne!) than the dreadfully boring Amelia Heinle’s take on Tom’s former Y&R character, Victoria.

Fall TV’s TUESDAY Must Watch

Before we dive into Tuesday night’s schedule, please pause for a moment and remember two dearly departed shows that are no longer with us. GILMORE GIRLS and VERONICA MARS — thanks for the memories, Tuesday will never be the same.

Moving on — in a dignified and respectful manner — this TV Addict is almost relieved that we get a break after Monday night’s must see TV marathon. With a mere three shows on Tuesday night — including HOUSE, REAPER and CANE, this TV Addict might actually have room for those important little things like friends, family and food.

Having been wildly disappointed by last year’s season finale of HEROES, I reluctantly tuned in to last night’s return and have to say I was… entertained. I won’t say that it was gripping, and it didn’t have that magic of the first few episodes, but the writers knew what they needed to do and they delivered. We got a charming new rogue — and an unexpected twist in Takezo Kensei, a new beau for Claire, two new Hispanic characters… but what we didn’t get was any information on Niki or her family. One thing fans of daytime soaps hate is when the story is overrun with newbies while beloved favorites are left to rot on the sidelines… just FYI, NBC. We also got some silliness. Yes, seeing HRG threaten his boss was designed to let everyone who’s ever worked for a prick have their “stand-up-and-cheer” moment. And really, wouldn’t a family on the run do a better job of changing their names? (For that matter, how seriously are we to take any threat they might be under when Claire proves not to be all that concerned by waving her hand over a flame in the middle of a classroom and indulging in other attention-grabbing behavior.) Finally, why on God’s green earth would the makers of a show which relies on plot twists and cliffhangers allow the promo department to slap together a post-show preview which gives away several major twists? Yes, if you really want to find spoilers they’re easily accessible on the web, including a fairly detailed outline of the next few episodes on wikipedia. And I suppose those not wanting to know could just skip the scenes for upcoming episodes, but who expects them to give away so much?

When talking with a friend recently about THE BACHELOR, I pointed out that in ABC’s promos we see him showering, cooking, running — all shirtless — but we never actually hear him speak. Well, five minutes into the premiere, we found out why. Turns out Brad Womack likes the word “very” a lot (“It was a very big lesson on how life can change at the very drop of a hat”) and makes constant references to things he’s learned. It might go without saying that some of those things aren’t exactly lightbulb moments. Like, “it’s difficult growing up poor.” Whenever the producers suspect we’re getting bored with Brad’s blah bio, they cut to him running or cooking eggs or showering… shirtless. And what does this “self-made millionaire” do for a living? Run bars, of course. Apparently, the meat markets he runs aren’t hot spots, ’cause this guy’s coming on television to find his… altogether now… soulmate. Then comes the part we’re all waiting for: the squealing, primping, crying, girls. Let’s face it, we’re all watching for the same reason: to pick out the bitch, the crybaby, the girl who’s there for the wrong reason, the psycho… all the stereotypes that we know are going to be shoved under that roof. And they don’t disappoint! “My strategy is to not cry and to not get drunk,” says Lori. “It’s going to be like high school all over again,” says another in a manner which leaves me convinced she thinks that’s a good thing. At every commercial break, we’re told that Brad is about to meet 25 beautiful women. And they are. What, they couldn’t throw a couple average girls with great personalities into the mix? Perhaps we’re supposed to be content with the fact that as always, there’s a token lady or two of color. Rigina, for example, is a beautiful african american woman who introduces herself as “Miss Brown Sugar” and is almost immediately given the “I can’t wait to get to know you better inside” brush off. About halfway through the endless bimbo parade, I start fast-forwarding. There are only so many times you can hear the exact same small talk exchanged before brain meltage sets in. But by the time one of the girls offers Brad a tongue analysis, another dances and a third warbles an off-key tune, I’m all in. I swear, if this guy said, “Gals, I wanna see some lesbianic action,” they’d start swapping spit. One chick actually hikes up her dress and casually throws her legs behind her head in an effort to get the First Impression rose. I kid you not. And that was before Melissa got drunk and lost a (fake) boob, Morgan revealed that she has webbed feet and Mallory stripped down to a bikini for a swim. I want nothing more than to sign all these women up for a self-esteem course, but instead, I’ll be here every week to laugh at… er, support them on their journey.

Fall TV’s MONDAY Must Watch

MONDAY SURPRISES
Whoever thought Chuck Lorre’s BIG BANG THEORY would be funny and watch-able (certainly not this TWO AND A HALF MEN hater). And to think, I spent my entire summer crafting witty headlines like this one — ‘Big Bang Big Bust.’ Chuck Lorre, you may have just made up for giving Charlie Sheen another job.

UNDER THE RADAR
Amidst the endless hype for BIONIC WOMAN and CHUCK, odds are good that you may have forgotten about a little show called JOURNEYMAN. Starring ROME’S Kevin McKidd and from the minds that brought you THE WEST WING (Alex Graves and Kevin Falls), JOURNEYMAN revolves around a San Francisco newspaper reporter and family man who inexplicably begins to travel through time and change people’s lives. The TV Addict encourages you to check it out, or else NBC may quickly decide to send JOURNEYMAN packing.

They Suffer, You Win!

Over the next few weeks, TV execs are going to be as nervous as Britney Spears before her VMA performance as they anxiously await each morning’s ratings report. Will their new shows prove to be LOST-like hits or ANCHORWOMAN-ish flops? (You almost have to pity the poor assistants who will come bearing the bad news. That’s gotta be almost as tough as handling OJ’s public image!) We hear at The TV Addict, however, admit to taking a certain pleasure in this annual rite of passage, especially since it’s all played out in a very public forum and rests entirely on the whims of the viewing public! This year, in order to take part in the bloodshed that is the Fall TV Season, we’re offering up a very special prize to the person who correctly picks which show will be the first to bite the dust. That’s right… the exec gets headaches, you get a cool prize package!

The rules are simple: By Monday, October 1, leave a comment with your prediction for the first show to be cancelled. Only one guess per player, please. The first show to be cancelled AFTER OCTOBER 1 will be considered Fall’s first fatality for the purposes of this contest. 11:09PM: No Brainer of the night. THE SOPRANOS walks away with Outstanding Drama. I’d probably be a bit more emotional had I watched the show.

11:04PM: Tina Fey wants to thank 30 ROCK’s dozens of dozens of viewers. Tina, you’re so welcome. Can’t wait until the second season premiere, which by the way is this October 4 at 8PM. Don’t let 30 ROCK go the way of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. Jump on the bandwagon now!

10:56PM: Shock of the night. James…. waiting for Gandolfini… but no. JAMES SPADER! Seriously. Sleep with one eye open. Gandolfini’s going to be pissed.

10:53PM: America Ferrerra wins…. cue the tear ducts. Mine and hers.

10:41PM: SALLY FIELD and RICKY GERVAIS! Life is Good!

10:39PM: “Ricky Gervais couldn’t be here tonight so instead we’re going to give this to our friend Steve Carrell.” Could I love Stewart, Colbert and Correll anymore?

8:40PM: Katherin Heigl’s asking price just went up A LOT.

8:29PM: I’m back after enhaling a quick burger and fries. Anyone else thrilled nobody from TWO AND A HALF MEN have won thus far?

8:16PM: TERRY O’QUINN! WOW! That is fantastic ans so well deserved.

8:03PM: FAMILY GUY opens the show by completely slamming television, with special attention to NBC’s struggles… interesting approach. And by interesting, I of course mean somewhat insulting and tastless. I guess the show can only improve from here.

7:49PM: Charlie Sheen just quoted the late great John Spencer…. I will now pause my continual ripping of TWO AND A HALF MEN. Tonight only.

7:43PM: Commercial thoughts. You could not PAY me to eat KFC chicken cheese fries.

7:36PM: Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell, hottest couple ever? If nature has a sense of humour, their kids will look really really ugly. Mabye like this.

7:30PM: Not surprisingly, Neal Patrick Harris suited up!

7:25PM: Vanessa Williams looks awesome. A mother a four, probably in her forties, yet looks twenty. Only in Hollywood.

7:20PM: T-Minus forty minutes until showtime. Time for the most important decision you’ll be making all night — No, not your Emmy pics. What food are you ordering/eating at tonight’s party? This TV Addict will be serving food from Toronto’s best burger joint BURGER SHACK.

7:09PM: Kristen Bell… and the cast of HEROES! Bell she has an awesome super power. Yes, soon the world will know what VERONICA MARS fans have known for three years. Kristen Bell = Awesome.

7:03PM: Julia Louis Dreyfus confirms why I”ll never be a supermodel, explaining how she looks so great, “hard work and healthy eating”… d’oh

6:58PM: Portia De Rossi is on Ellen’s arm. Moment of silence for ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT.

6:32PM: Kathie Griffin brought Steve Wozniak as her date to the Emmys. For those of you who don’t speak nerd, Wozniak is the founder of APPLE Computer! Question: What is sadder? That I know who Wozniak is, or that Seacrest doesn’t?

6:25PM: Speaking of objectifying woman — How many times is Ryan Seacrest going to sexually harass the woman he’s interviewing? Ryan, we get it. You’re totally straight.

6:23PM: TV Addict Best Dressed List: Could Ali Larter look any better? Forget dual personality, her new superpower — getting dressed.

6:18PM: If you were Rainn Wilson’s Prom Date…. comment below. Yes we’re talking to you Kathie. Is anyone else weirded out by the fact that OFFICE superfan, the woman behind GMMR is also named Kathie. Umm.. Kathie, is there something you’re not telling us?
