Jenny’s TV Guide: Sunday May 4

Sunday marks the season finale of Cold Case on CBS at an earlier time, 8/7c (which is followed by 2 episodes of Dexter!). Nicholle Tom (The Nanny, guest starred most recently on Criminal Minds), guests when the team investigates when a former drug addict insists she saw her son in a park three years after he allegedly died in an apartment fire.

Tonight is also the season premiere of This American Life on Showtime at 10/9c. From Showtime’s website: Compelling stories are explored every day on “This American Life,” the nearly 15-year-old, award-winning Chicago Public Radio show that boasts a devoted weekly listening audience of 1.7 million, and is heard on more than 500 stations nationally. In the same spirit of the radio show, the televised version takes 30-minute looks at stories culled from all over the country. Glass and a small team of radio producers and filmmakers spent six months on the road: traveling to Iowa pig farms, following a first-time filmmaker in California, photographing a raucous night at an Illinois hot dog stand. The result is true stories that are dramatic, emotional, and often funny.

You Be the Critic: GREY’S ANATOMY, LOST and UGLY BETTY

Last night’s phenomenal return of Kate Walsh to GREY’S ANATOMY was the best advertisement PRIVATE PRACTICE could have ever hoped for. Not only did Addison light the spark for the inevitable Meredith McDreamy reconciliation, not to mention get the ball rolling on Callie hooking up with Hahn, she reminded viewers of how good PRIVATE PRACTICE could be. Assuming creator Shonda Rhimes looks back at last night’s episode, remembers what a powerful force she has in Kate Walsh and doesn’t squander another season of PRIVATE PRACTICE by turning Addison into an obnoxious and insecure teenager. [Here’s hoping.]

After the remarkable season they’ve given us, this TV Addict is not about to seriously take LOSTerminds Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse to task for last night’s underwhelming installment of LOST. But in TV terms, the Jack—centric adventure was clearly the classic “bottle” show. An episode meant to conserve funds for what will most likely be some very expensive episodes leading up to the super-sized season finale. Which I’m completely cool with, as long as fans start seeing dividends. And by dividends, I mean ANSWERS! You know, to little questions like, where the frak did Claire go? What’s the deal with Jack’s dad? And what favor is Kate doing for Sawyer? Yes Mr. Lindeloff and Cuse, it’s about time LOST started paying fans off for the four years we’ve invested into this time-sucking, maddeningly addictive show. [That we love. Really, keep up the great work!]

You guys know I love Greek – any chance I get to talk about the show, I jump on it. Jacob Zachar (Rusty Cartwright) was kind enough to spend some time talking to me about his character, his show and how he’s bringing the funk back to California!

I love the show – immediately hooked on it from the first episode.
Jacob Zachar: Thank you very much.

How did Rusty happen for you?
I moved out here from Chicago to LA. I started getting some auditions and Greek came up. I actually auditioned for the role that Clark had (Dale) first. They ended up switching me around and asking me if I wanted to read for Rusty and one thing led to the next, and I ended up getting Rusty. It kind of appealed to me a little bit more. I feel Dale’s more of a character, far out kind of role, and this part of Rusty’s like a Boy Scout, traditional type of guy. I had a lot of things that I related to, so I think it came a lot easier actually.

Jenny’s TV Guide: Sunday April 27

Sunday marks the series premiere of Celebracadabra on VH1 at 9/8c. This celeb-reality challenge unlike any other. 7 stars team up with 7 professional magicians in a race to become the ultimate celebrity magician. Watch as Celebrity Fit Club host Ant, Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, comedian Hal Sparks, singer Carnie Wilson, 80s icon C. Thomas Howell, Kid N’ Play’s Chris “Kid” Reid, and actress Lisa Ann Walter duke it out while learning tricks that can take the masters years to master. Street Magic, Children’s Magic, Comedy Magic, Cabaret Magic, Strolling Magic, Phobia Magic — our celebs do it (or at least attempt to do it) all. Their work will be judged by a panel of 3 superstar magicians. Each week, one of the celebrities will be eliminated, until the final two battle it out in Las Vegas for our Grand Illusion finale. Sounds fun! I never watch VH1, but with this cast of celebrities, I will have to watch. I love Ant & Hal Sparks!

It’s also the season finales of 3 shows. First up is a 90-minute finale of Celebrity Fit Club on VH1 at 7:30/6:30c (hosted by the aforementioned Ant!), then Big Brother on CBS at 8/7c and finally Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union on Showtime at 10/9c.

The TV Addict Previews BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Prequel CAPRICA

The TV Addict has a secret.

No contrary to popular belief, I’m not the final Cylon! Rather, I’ve been keeping quiet that for the past two weeks I’ve had in my possession the prequel script to CAPRICA, the highly anticipated spin-off of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

Yet, rather than risk the wrath of the Gods — and by ‘Gods’ I’m naturally referring to CAPRICA show-runners Remi Aubuchon and Ronald D. Moore — this TV thought he’d take a different approach. Because as much fun as it might be to play Michael Ausiello [ie. Spoiler King] for a day, I truly believe that television is far more entertaining when you don’t know what happens next.

But first things first, if you thought BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was a far cry from your father’s science fiction [ie. STAR TREK], you ain’t seen nothing yet. CAPRICA, set a mere fifty-one years prior to the planet’s destruction portrays a far seedier version of modern day earth, essentially reading like an episode of HBO’s THE WIRE. Like all Ronald D. Moore projects, the pilot is riddled with political intrigue, racial prejudice, religious zealots and a seriously cool take on Second Life courtesy of Graystone Industries million dollar idea, the Holodeck HoloBand.

Josh Freidman Talks SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES Season Two

You just found out your show’s been officially picked up for a second season. TERMINATOR THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES showrunner Josh Friedman, what are you going to do next?

Okay, so spending forty-five minutes trying to fend off spoiler hungry reporters isn’t quite a trip to Disney Land. But nonetheless, executive producer Josh Friedman was in good spirits earlier this afternoon and was more than happy to take some time out of his busy schedule to talk to a group of reporters about the continuing adventures of Sarah Connor and Co.

Did the show’s budget give FOX pause when thinking about green-lighting a second season?
No, I don’t think the budget gave FOX pause at all. I think people think we’re spending a lot more money than we are [TV Addict note, I think he’s talking to you Mr. Ausiello]. The production team is incredibly responsible and have remained within the parameters Warner and Fox have given us. If the show looks big, it’s just because we’re all doing our job so well!

So what you’re saying is no underwater Terminator this season?
[Laughs] While I do believe heavily in underwater Terminators, someone’s going to have to write me a big cheque to make that happen! Thinking about the buoyancy of Terminators, how they propel themselves, do they sink? Swim? It’s a weird hobby/infatuation of mine.

Looking back on the first season, can you name one aspect of the show that really worked, and one aspect that you’d like to see improved heading into season two.
This is kind of generic, but I love our cast. When casting a series you never know what you’re going to get. But they really did what they needed to do. In terms of things that could be improved, I want to write a show that is complicated and sophisticated and subtle — everyone does, I guess — but I tried to write something that was very serialized and there were some points where the storytelling was a little muddy where I think we could do a better job.
