It’s only the middle of June and already I’ve got a wicked “What I did on my summer vacation” story to share with you all. A little over a week ago, I had the great pleasure of spending some time on the set of a little show we all know (and should absolutely love). USA was great enough to invite a few members of the online media word (read: bloggerati) to visit Miami and the set of BURN NOTICE!

I arrived on a Thursday afternoon, just a few hours before our scheduled dinner at The Chart House with the mastermind behind the whole show, the absolutely hilarious and incredibly personable Matt Nix. We had a great time at dinner, talking about the show. In the only conversation of the two days that we didn’t get a chance to record (I think we all had our recorders in our bags, but no one wanted to break that ice), Matt told us stories about how the show came to be, about why he ended up in Miami, and what might happen to various characters if he suddenly stops getting along with their portrayer! He offered great insight into the world of BURN NOTICE and why he likes filming in Miami. He wasn’t just putting us on, either. You can tell just by the way he tells a story, that he truly loves his job and couldn’t ask for anything better.

One of my favorite stories of the night was him telling us about shooting last year’s finale, when they blew up a car with a missile and created a giant mushroom cloud in the middle of downtown Miami. He recalled watching the dailies and thinking how cool it was that they had gotten all these extras to drive through Miami as they caused this damage on the bridge. When he realized that they weren’t extras, that it was actually Miami traffic, his thoughts immediately went to the crazy fact that no one stopped. Not a single person on the bridge stopped to check out the mushroom cloud. It’s a hilarious commentary on where our minds are. Mushroom cloud = normal, naturally.

TV Addict Interview: THE MIDDLEMAN Star Brit Morgan

If you want my opinion, you should tune in to watch tonight’s premiere of THE MIDDLEMAN on ABC Family. It’s funny, it’s fast paced. There is a lot of action, and activism, and guitar playing, and art, and film students, and monsters, and Chloe from 24. The cast is charming, eclectic, diverse, and really well cast in their roles. But if you don’t want to take my word for it, maybe you’ll listen to one of the series’ stars, Brit Morgan, who plays Lacey on the show. Here is what she had to say about the show, why you should watch, and how she ended up “traveling” with Toby Keith, Ted Nugent, and Rodney Carrington.

So for people who aren’t really sure what THE MIDDLEMAN is about, in your words, describe your show?
Brit Morgan: It’s about a young girl, her name is Wendy Watson. She gets recruited by a temp agency to fight evil. In other words, she thinks she’s going to go work for a temp agency and it ends up being THE MIDDLEMAN. So she’s now this young girl who fights evil for a living [laughs]. It’s her journey through that.

And you play her roommate Lacey. How does Lacey fit into the whole scheme of things?
Lacey fits in, she’s Wendy’s best friend. She has all sorts of escapades of her own. She really has nothing to do with the evil-fighting as of yet. She’s sort of just Wendy’s go to whenever there’s trouble.

Does she know about Wendy, or is that a secret world?
She doesn’t. She doesn’t know about Wendy; Wendy constantly has to keep this side of life from me, from Lacey. So Lacey doesn’t know. When Lacey finds out, I’m sure it’ll be big, but Lacey does not know. [laughs]

TV Addict Interview: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Star Rekha Sharma

The mid-season cliffhanger/finale of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, airs Friday night on SciFi and I, for one, cannot wait. Series star Rekha Sharma, the devious now-Cylon Tory, who offed Callie Tyrol and boffed Gaius Balter, shares my excitement and can’t wait for everyone to tune in. I spent some time talking with Rekha about her role on the show, what we can expect for the rest of the series, and what Johnny Depp threw at her that gained him her respect.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is one of my favorite shows. I have to say that your character this season has actually really moved me. So I just wanted to say that you’ve done a great job.
Rekha Sharma: Aw, thank you. Being moved is not a response I hear too often, so I really appreciate that [laughs].

Why when this all started, did you want to be Tory? How did this role happen for you?
Well, I had auditioned for a couple of smaller roles and I could tell that I liked these people. I wasn’t aware of how fabulous the show was, I just knew that there was something special happening in the room. When I got the breakdown for this character, I got really excited because I really liked the character. She seemed really strong, smart, in this great position with the female president. She has a good sense of humor, just a cool happening chick. Feisty and all that stuff. I worked really hard, and my hard work paid off and they decided to cast me.

What are some of your favorite things about her?
My favorite things, well, she’s way smarter than I am, in some ways. I don’t think I have what it takes to be a politician. She does. She’s very organized and very hard working. From playing her, I’ve come to sort of think about what it must be like to live your life as a politician and the expansiveness and the large vision you must have, you have to make some really tough decisions. While she hasn’t made those decisions, she’s supported Laura in making those big decisions. Yeah, it’s tough, it’s really tough. Fortunately, and unfortunately, I think that’s still part of her character, as she’s come to discover her Cylon nature, and she made a tough decision with Cally. Who’s to say it was the right one? She did what she thought was necessary in that moment.

HOME IMPROVEMENT’s Marketing Needs Improvement

home improvement dvdHome improvement is hell. The endless delays, inconveniences, broken contracts and unfinished projects are enough to drive one mad. In fact, I often wonder how my contractor sleeps so soundly at night knowing full well that he’s left me hanging with an incomplete kitchen. Oh wait, the giant bag of money that substitutes as his pillow probably helps! But I digress, because clearly this isn’t thebitterhomeowner.com and I know full well that I’m supposed to be writing about television.

Which is perhaps why I feel so compelled to point out the massive lie currently being perpetrated by one Walt Disney Studios with the release of the eight and final season of HOME IMPROVEMENT on DVD. Notice how Jonathan Taylor Thomas is smiling back alongside the rest of the Taylor family. Well it’s because they’re in on it too.

Did Walt Disney Studios really think we wouldn’t notice? I mean seriously, what HOME IMPROVEMENT fan [and yes, you know you watched the show] doesn’t remember that the artist formerly known as JTT was not actually in the final season of the show [with the exception of one ‘very special episode’] In other words, somebody’s got some ‘splainin’ to do. And if you happen to know any good contractors…

Needless to say, when this TV Addict first introduced ASK THE ADDICT last Wednesday, I quite honestly had no idea so many readers were too lazy to type a question into google had so many great questions. So without further ado, I present the inaugural edition of ASK THE ADDICT.

Question: Holy rip off Batman? Paging Michael Ausiello’s lawyer! — Jenn

The TV Addict: This may come as a shock to the numerous Ausholes [Fans of Ausiello] who emailed. But Michael Ausiello did not invent the ‘Ask [insert name here]’ format. In fact, after hours of tedious research*, this TV Addict discovered that advice columns have a long history in journalism, reaching back to the “letters to the lovelorn” that appeared in eighteenth-century magazine and newspapers.

* Hours of tedious research is actually code for the first thing that came up in a Google search query.

Question: Do you happen to know when SUPERNATURAL is going to start filming again? — Shannon

The TV Addict: According to my mole at the CW, SUPERNATURAL will be returning sometime in July. And although a specific date has not been announced, I can reveal that SUPERNATURAL and SMALLVILLE will both be returning to this July’s San Diego Comic Convention. Yet unlike previous years, both shows are tentatively scheduled to have their panels on the Sunday rather than the traditional Saturday. So plan your trip accordingly, as it undoubtedly be a shame to travel all the way to San Diego only to discover you won’t be seeing your favorite Winchester Brothers up close and personal. But not too personal. Like a trip to the zoo, a good rule of thumb when it comes to encountering real-life celebrities in the wild is look but don’t touch.

Jenny’s TV Guide: Monday June 9

Monday marks the series premiere of Master of Dance on TLC at 8/7c, followed by a 2nd episode at 8:30/7:30c. Hosted by Joey Lawrence, it tests the dancer’s moves by changing the song mid-performance to see if they can really go with the flow. Only the dancers with a full repertoire and the flexibility to keep up with the beat will be able to claim the grand prize – $50,000.

Tonight is also the 2-hour season premiere of Nashville Star on NBC at 9/8c.

Finally, tonight also brings with it the season finales of Greek on ABC Family at 8/7c and Ego Trip’s Miss Rap Supreme on VH1 at 10/9c.

Oh, and if you haven’t seen the first season of The Bill Engvall Show (on TBS), check out one of the season 1 episodes airing tonight on CBS at 8/7c. They are just airing the one episode, I believe, to try and entice new viewers to TBS on the 12th to the season premiere.

Jenny’s TV Guide: Friday June 6

Friday marks the season finale of Man vs Wild on Discovery at 9/8c. Bear travels to the Land of Ice, where he meets the Tuvans, yak herders descended from Genghis Khan, who have lived in Siberia for 20,000 years.

It’s also the series premiere of Charlie Jade on SciFi at 8/7c. Charlie Jade (Jeffrey Pierce, The Others, West Wing, JAG) is a rogue private detective in a world dominated by greedy multinational corporations. When Charlie sees the corpse of a beautiful young woman, he realizes she embodies the impossible: She has no identity, something inconceivable in Charlie’s world. While tracking her suspected killer, the trail leads Charlie to a secret desert facility. A massive explosion propels him into a parallel universe that seduces him with its similarities and baffles him with its differences. Charlie is soon drawn into a conflict that not only involves his home universe and the one he now inhabits but also includes a third universe. This one is pristine and pacifist with unsuspected terror at its heart.

Also check out the season premiere of Meerkat Manor: The Next Generation on Animal Planet at 9/8c. After the death of the matriarch last season, the meerkat family split into 2 clans, each headed by daughters of Flower, the previous leader. This season, Rocket Dog and Maybelline must live within the rather large shadow of their late mother, Flower, and there’s very little room in the Kalahari for both sisters’ clans. Not only do the meerkats face predators, harsh desert weather and archenemies the Commandos-there’s dissent in their ranks. Without a solid leader to unify them, they face their toughest survival threat yet-each other.
