Comic Con Live Blog: TRUE BLOOD

4:26PM: T-Minus four, wait, now three minutes until HBO’s TRUE BLOOD panel. Or as I like to call it, the only way to guarantee our seats for the DEXTER panel that follows immediately thereafter.

4:32PM: Since theTVaddict.com doesn’t endorse illegal downloading, I finally got a first look at TRUE BLOOD courtesy of a trailer HBO produced exclusively for Comic Con. It’s pretty much X-MEN, but with really sexy Vampires. Oh, and fellow Canadian Anna Paquin.

4:44PM:Creator Alan Ball [SIX FEET UNDER] promises to avoid the big three Vampire clichés: Blue light, Contact lenses and Opera music. Which is all well and good, but if you ask me, the big thing Ball should concentrate on avoiding is cancellation! Moment of silence for MOONLIGHT…

4:49PM: Because Anna Paquin’s protagonist Sookie Stackhouse is telepathic, she has remained a virgin. Take that ABC Family’s SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER.

Now & Then: The Dynasty Factor

When ABC’s DIRTY SEXY MONEY debuted last season, nobody wanted to love it more than I did. After all, some of my favorite shows of the past few decades have been the grand, glorious primetime sudsers of yore: DYNASTY, DALLAS and of course, my all-time favorite, KNOTS LANDING. The kind of wonderful, layered after-dark soaps we just don’t get any more.

To say MONEY was a disappointment would be akin to saying John McCain is middle-aged.

Now comes word that ABC is basically re-inventing MONEY, so with that in mind, I’d ask the new execs (as well as anyone in the industry looking to reinvigorate the practically dead genre of primetime soaps) to do what I did today: Go back and watch the first episode of DYNASTY.

Because it’s all right there.

TCA 2008: NBC Execs Talk Amy Poehler, THE OFFICE & Leno

NBC head honchos Marc Graboff and Ben Silverman, both the co-chairmen of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios took the stage to talk about all things NBC, which pretty much became the “Amy Poehler / Office Spinoff / Jay Leno” panel.

Amy Poehler is leaving SNL this season after her baby is born (due in October), and they just announced that they’ve locked her in for a Thursday night show of her own… which isn’t named right now. It’ll be produced by Greg Daniels and Mike Schur, who Graboff called “The next Greg Daniels.” It’s not a spinoff of The Office, but a brand new show… and they’re saying that the actual The Office spinoff, which is still happening is like “The Jeffersons” was to “All in The Family”. Amy isn’t involved with The Office spinoff, and characters from The Office won’t be appearing on the spinoff, or vice versa.

Jay Leno actually asked questions from the audience, disguised as a reporter. He wanted to know things like “NBC brought back Knight Rider, any chance of seeing Manimal?” and “Is there any truth to the rumor that you’ve offered Jay Leno a fifth hour on the Tonight Show?” and “Brett Favre announced his retirement from the Packers and now it looks like he’s coming back. What do you think about that?” They did announce that they’re working on keeping Jay Leno within the NBC/Universal family. With that in mind, Conan O’Brien’s start date on The Tonight Show will be June 1, 2009.

ABC’s new show HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: GET IN THE PICTURE starts tonight and I had the chance to speak with one of the “Faculty Members”, Montre Burton, about his role as mentor, and how you can live life to the fullest just by being you.

Tell me about HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: GET IN THE PICTURE!?Montre Burton: So I am a faculty member and what I do is mentor, encourage, challenge, nurture the students and what happens is I went across the country. There were six of us cohosts and I am one of the cohosts. We actually went across the country discovering new talent and ultimately looking for the next star. I would go to the southeast region, so went to Virginia, which is great because that’s where I’m from, North Carolina, Tennessee, Orlando, I went to Wisconsin, so I go to all these little different small obscure towns where it’s literally population 1, and it’s like Montre, and that’s it. I would go to these small towns and go to the high schools and see them perform, or go to their dance recitals or go to open mike night and find the talent and send them to the semifinals in Orlando. Then from there we have the open calls, where we saw literally thousands of kids. Plus we also saw the people I discovered in small towns. From the best of the best, the people we saw at the open calls and the people we found on the road, we sent them to Utah, which is where we are right now. And then literally, every day, acting singing, dancing, all trying to be the next star.

I didn’t realize that you were searching for the talent; I didn’t realize that it wasn’t just the open call, so it seems like there is a better possibility for an undiscovered talent.?
Oh yeah, we have been all over this country! The six of us, they took 3 for the west and 3 for the east and they split the three of us across the entire region. We went to about 9-10 different states a piece.

TCA 2008: Brenda [officially] Returns to 90210

If you had told me a few years ago that 90210 would be getting the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA re-imagination treatment. I probably would have responded with a, “whatcha frakin’ talkin’ about willis?”

However, with the CW in desperate need of a mammoth sized hit to help propel them out of the ratings cellar, here we are in. Saturday morning at the 2008 Television Critics Association Press Tour, getting introduced to the cast and creative team of 90210 Version 2.0.

Yet rather than dismiss this last ditch effort to save a struggling network, I’m going to surprise you all by thinking positive. For one, the CW has entrusted the 90210 re-boot to Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah. Two of the brains behind the brilliant-but-cancelled FREAKS AND GEEKS. And two, Jessica Walter, otherwise known as the drink-swilling, acid-tongued Bluth matriarch from ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT has been cast as, you guessed it — the Mills family matriarch. The difference, according to Walters, “Well, Lucille liked vodka, and Tabitha likes scotch.”

TCA 2008: Showtime’s DEXTER, WEEDS, CALIFORNICATION and BROTHERHOOD

Talk about Showtime!

The little network that could, or as we around theTVaddict.com are now calling it — HBO 2.0 — decided to pull out all the stops my rolling up the WEEDS, CALIFORNICATION, DEXTER and BROTHERHOOD panel into one enormous joi…. ummm fantastic panel.

Heck, even one of the executives joked, “This is the Showtime mixer!” Granted, I’ve never seen Brotherhood, but at least I hear it’s good. The other shows I can vouch for. And I admittedly had a chill go up my spine when Michael C. Hall walked onto the stage. How can people not be afraid that this guy is going to stick a knife in their backs?

What’s really impressive was how much everyone looked like they had tried to dress like their characters, except Michael C. Hall who wore a sharp suit. David Duchovny was wearing a black button up shirt with a wrinkled black sportcoat, and Mary Louise Parker had on a sharp little cocktail dress and looked radiant in her gleaming white skin. How she’s lived in California all this time and not become tan, I’ll never know. She’s sitting on the far left, right next to David Duchovny, who’s sitting next to Michael C. Hall, who’s sitting next to Jason Clarke in an awesome row of Showtime star power.

Jenny’s TV Guide: Wednesday July 16

Wednesday marks the series premiere of Family Foreman on TV Land at 10/9c. In this six episode series, TV Land gives viewers an intimate look at George Foreman, the former heavyweight boxing champ who reinvented himself as a successful businessman and pitchman. Viewers will get a rare glimpse into his home life as a minister and father to ten children, five of whom are also named George Edward Foreman.

It’s also the season finales of Celebrity Circus on NBC at 10/9c & Chopper Challenge on CMT at 8:30/7:30c.

Finally, it’s the season premieres of Project Runway on Bravo at 9/8c, Dog the Bounty Hunter on A&E at 9/8c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 9:30/8:30c & Run’s House on MTV at 10/9c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 10:30/9:30c.

Jenny’s TV Guide: Tuesday July 15

Tuesday marks the series premiere of four shows. First up on A&E is The Cleaner at 10/9c. It follows Benjamin Bratt as William Banks, a recovering addict who helps others get clean by any means necessary as he struggles to maintain his own rocky personal life. William works with an eclectic team. Swenton is a wily smart aleck who is great undercover and always jealous of Akani, the beautiful, manipulative, and mysterious woman who always seems to get the best assignments and might just have a romantic past with William. Darnell is the newest member of William’s crew. Darnell is deeply indebted to William for helping his younger brother get clean, but he must balance his deep religious convictions with the kind of work required as part of William’s team. Together with this eclectic group, William works week-in and week-out to bring addicts of all kinds to the point where they are ready and willing to get help and begin the difficult process of getting clean. With every success and every failure, William wrestles with his own demons through an unusual relationship with God. He’s a man caught between an unwavering commitment to his work, deep love for his family, and the ghosts of his own addictions. Bad for his personal life, perhaps, but these are the tensions that make William the one you want helping a troubled loved one, the one you trust to do whatever is necessary, the man you want by your side in your darkest hour. In the face of tragedy and addiction, William Banks will risk everything to be The Cleaner.
