WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
24 (9PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Okay, Mr. Bad Guy, it’s one thing to crash planes and threaten the people of the United States. But when you start trash-talkin’ the First Family, you’ve gone too far! Expect retribution to begin… sometime in the next 10 hours.

HEROES (9PM NBC, 10PM on Global in Canada)
Paintings predict a dire future, Sylar meets a guy with abilities he wants to use… wait, this is the storyline that was going to be different and exciting and make everything better again, right? Um, is it working?

THE BIG BANG THEORY (9:30PM CBS)
Christine Baranski swings by as Leonard’s mom. Past experience has taught us that maternal visits to any sitcom character usually wind up disasterously. Meanwhile, is it just us, or is CBS trying to kill this show by just running it whenever the heck they have a gap to fill?

NEW & NOTABLE:
GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
Seeing as The CW is blowing off Obama’s talk, I bet they wish they had something new to offer folks as an alternative! Instead, we get a rerun of this year’s snowflake ball.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 5, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
UGLY BETTY (8PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Daniel’s got something to hide, and Betty is caught up in family matters. In other words, just another day in her world. On the plus side, that cute neighbor of Betty’s seems to be taking a renewed interested in her, so maybe things are looking up.

THE OFFICE (9PM NBC, Global in Canada)
Ugh. Michael goes on yet another road trip. That’s the bad news. The good news is that Pam is along for the ride this time instead of Dwight. But I’m not 100% convinced even she can make Michael more palatable at this point.

SUPERNATURAL (9PM CW)
A sexy siren (is there any other kind?) lures three men to their doom. And when the Winchester boys investigate, it’s brother-vs-brother thanks to the evil temptress!

GREY’S ANATOMY (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
Having apparently not learned a thing from every other doctor or intern at Seattle Grace, Lexie demands that she and Mark make their relationship public. Meanwhile, having not learned a thing from his girlfriend’s nearly psychotic narcissistic whining, Derek tries figuring out just the right way to propose. (Dude, trust us: No matter what you do, she’ll kevetch about it later.)

30 ROCK (9:30PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
Can the unlucky-in-love Liz Lemon finally get her act together and impress her sexy new neighbor (special guest Jon Hamm)? Yeah, wouldn’t bet on it.

PRIVATE PRACTICE (10PM NBC, “A” in Canada)
Crossover alert! When Addison’s brother has a seizure, she calls in ex-hubby Derek (of GREY’S ANATOMY) for a consult. Translation: This show is in trouble, and they need to lure in viewers any way they can. Ha! You can’t fool us, sly ABC executives!

Good News, Bad News: CHUCK, PRIVILEGED, REAPER & More!

Good News: The heavily hyped post-Super Bowl 3D episode of CHUCK netted the criminally under-watched series its best ratings of the season. Bad News: Too bad 8.35 million viewers still weren’t enough to put a dent in HOUSE, THE BIG BANG THEORY or THE BACHELOR which still managed to wipe the floor with the gang from Buy More. [Source]

Good News: For REAPER fans, who will get to see their favorite series return on March 3 — two weeks earlier than originally planned. Bad News: For PRIVILEGED fans, whose season (or is it series?) will wrap up earlier then originally planned, possibly indicating the CW’s lack of long term confidence in the series. [Source]

Good News: ABC Family orders 20 more episodes of GREEK (a TV Addict favorite) and announces a summer 2009 bow. Bad News: And quietly cancels KYLE XY in the process. [Source]

Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 2, 2009

Tough choices will have to be made tonight thanks to the fact that for the first time in a while, all five of the main networks have original programming on at both 8PM and 9PM. Here’s the breakdown of who’s showing what:

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW, A Channel in Canada)
As Blair once again proves why she’ll never be the teacher’s pet, Chuck wakes up in a hotel room with no memory of the previous night’s events. Who does he call for help in piecing things together? Why, Nate and Vanessa, of course. It ain’t like they’ve got anything else to do like, say, take part in a plot that revolves around them.

THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Life lesson Penny really should have learned by now: When times get help, don’t turn to Sheldon. He can only make matters worse.

CHUCK (8PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
Are we watching? Absolutely. Are we bitter that this TV Addict’s Canadian Broadcaster CityTV completely dropped the ball by failing to ensure 3D glasses were available to Canadian CHUCK fans? You betcha!

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
The clock is ticking down for Robin, who has to get a job or be sent packing. Fortunately, Barney is willing to lend a helping hand… and surely nothing could go wrong with that scenario, right?

24 (9PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Dubaku sets his sights on sending another powerful message as Jack and his band of misfits try to prevent things from getting any worse. All we wanna know is when Janis and Chloe will finally cross paths. Let’s face it… that’s where the real suspense lies!

HEROES (9PM NBC, 10PM Global in Canada)
This cycle is gonna be great! No, seriously, they promise! Sure, they said that about Villains, but if you just give ’em one more chance… yeah, um, we’re going to give this show one more shot. And only because DAMAGES’ Zeljko Ivanek is guest starring.

Things Get UGLY For BETTY

First things first, ABC has not canceled UGLY BETTY.

Yes, we realize that yesterday’s story by Michael Ausiello has a lot of you concerned, especially when said reporter ends off his story on such an ominous note (“The net’s [ABC] not saying [when Betty will be back], and that’s the part that has me worried.”) But remember, to his credit, Ausiello often prefers to create the story, rather than simply report on it (see seemingly never-ending posts related to movies that have very little chance of actually happening: GILMORE GIRLS, VERONICA MARS etc.)

The reality of the situation is that this happens all the time. At the height of their popularity, shows like ER, PRISON BREAK and even HOUSE have all been taken off the air to allow their respective networks the opportunity to launch new shows in their valuable time slot.

That said, yesterday’s news of a BETTY benching starting March 26 to make room for back-to-back comedies IN THE MOTHERHOOD and SAMANTHA WHO at 8PM on Thursdays, does raise one far more worrisome question.

Will anyone miss Betty?

HOUSE (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Cuddy’s busy babysitting, so Cameron winds up supervising House, who is dealing with a very nice patient. In the way only House can, he thinks that maybe nice ain’t such a good thing.

24 (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Jack has a bold plan to set things right. Can you imagine if just once, he had a kinda bland plan that involved not torture or subterfuge, but sitting down over a bucket of KFC. Maybe I’m just hungry. In other news, President Taylor has to decide whether or not her administration is going to negotiate with terrorists.

NEW & NOTABLE:
THE BACHELOR (8PM ABC)
Synergy alert! Six of the remaining nine ladies — and I use the term loosely — join the title stud on a trip to the set of GENERAL HOSPITAL, where they hang with that show’s Bradford Anderson (cybergeek Spinelli) and Kirsten Storms (mouthy Maxie). Give as this is the set of daytime’s most violent show, the gals might wanna don bulletproof vests.

Spotlight on LIE TO ME Star Tim Roth

Why Tim Roth is “Spotlight” Worthy: Tonight, after sixty plus movies to his credit, he will jump from the big to the small screen with his new FOX series LIE TO ME. On which he plays DR. CAL LIGHTMAN, the world’s leading deception expert who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if someone is lying, but why.

Why Television: “They [producers] like to get us in their 40’s,” joked Roth. “They wait until you’ve got kids and you’re ready to go home after work rather than another hotel room.”

Take Two: When asked what (outside of the proximity to his family) attracted Roth to the series he responded, “I thought the character [Dr. Cal Lightman] was actually kind of interesting. So if we are going to be doing this for the long haul, which we may. The character would hold the interest for the audience as much as he would hold the interest for me.”

Review: UNITED STATES OF TARA

UNITED STATES OF TARA opens to the title character looking somber and peeved. And in the next scene, she’s T, a rowdy, horny, and suggestive teenager who proudly wears her thong outside her jeans isn’t afraid of thrusting her hips in the air while supporting herself on the kitchen counter.

Sometimes she becomes Buck, a gun-slinging, beer-chugging redneck – and a man. And when she needs an extra-feminine touch, she’s Alice, prim-and-proper ’50s mother with perfectly sculpted hair and impeccable baking skills. These personality transitions are done entirely without any explanation other than that we already know that Tara (played brilliantly by Toni Collette) has dissociative identity disorder, or as it was previously known, multiple personality disorder.

But she’s mostly just Tara Gregson, a Kansas mother who paints murals for the wasp set, struggles to figure out her teenage kids (Brie Larson and Keir Gilchrist), and looks to her astoundingly patient husband (John Corbett) to get her through the madness of everyday life.

PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH’S FINAL PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS (8PM CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC, NBC)
After requesting 15 minutes to address the nation for the final time, President Bush can now add messing up our “Thursday Night TV Schedule” to his illustrious legacy that include sinking America’s reputation both at home and abroad, the handling of Katrina and the economy. Below, be sure to take note of the irregular start times to some of your favorite shows like CSI (8:15 and 9:15PM).

SMALLVILLE (8PM CW)
No stinkin’ presidential address is gonna get in the way of Clark Kent starting on time! Not when Chloe’s been kidnapped and a trio known as The Legion are on hand to help!

MY NAME IS EARL (8:30PM NBC)
Joy and a reality show? Seems like a match made in heaven, huh?

SUPERNATURAL (9PM CW)
If you’ve been jonesing for a break from the mythology-heavy outings on tap of late, this could be your night as the show offers up a good, old-fashioned haunted house story that gets complicated when a family moves in.

THE OFFICE (9PM NBC)
Andy finally learns the truth about Dwight and Angela. One guess as to who spills the beans.

CSI (9:15PM NBC)
You can bet your butt there are some execs at CBS who are ticked as hell that President Bush has the nerve to screw up tonight’s other big exit… that of Grissom.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: January 14, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
LOST (8PM ABC)
If there’s one thing this show has taught us, it’s that sometimes you have to look back in order to understand what’s to come. So tonight, in preparation for next week’s fifth-season premiere, ABC offers up a repeat of the fourth-season finale. Frankly, we’re not big on reruns… but given the complicated nature of LOST, you bet your time-tripping, freighter-bombing, Orchid-lovin’ butt we’ll be tuning in.

90210 (9PM CW)
Why are we watching last night’s episode of 90210 again? Because our #!$#@!!! Rogers PVR/DVR is so #!$#@!!! unreliable that it neglected to do the one thing that a “Personal/Digital Video Record” is supposed to do. Record the #!$#@!!! show!

DAMAGES (10PM FX)
Ellen gets lucky (with a man) and unlucky (with a case and the FBI), while Patty takes on Purcell (William Hurt) as a client despite his refusal to tell her everything she wants — and maybe even needs — to know.

NEW & NOTABLE:
KNIGHT RIDER (8PM NBC, E! in Canada)
They’re calling this episode “Day Turns Into Knight” (oh, those clever punsters!) but I’m gonna label it “Speed Rip-off” seeing as the plot finds a bomb attached to K.I.T.T. that will detonate if the car falls below a certain speed.

13: FEAR IS REAL (8PM CW, CityTV in Canada)
Last week’s premiere wasn’t exactly terrifying… or, um, scary, at least not until the end, when two contestants were “buried alive” as part of the “execution ceremony.” And comparisons to The Blair Witch Project were practically unavoidable. But I think one thing we can all agree on: Whiny Leah and her creepy lip need to be given the boot ASAP. Here’s hoping tonight, she winds up dealing with the rat-related final challenge.
