You Be the Critic: THE OFFICE, PARKS AND RECREATION, SOUTHLAND and HARPER’S ISLAND
Because as it would turn out, TiVoing Passover wasn’t a viable option and my family didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye with my belief that NBC’s “Must See TV” was important enough to skip the second Seder, this TV Addict is once again passing the buck to you — my far smarter and better looking readers — to post away with your thoughts on last night’s installments of THE OFFICE (x2), PARKS AND RECREATION, SOUTHLAND and HARPER’s ISLAND.
Review: HARPER’S ISLAND
By: Aleks Chan
When I first heard CBS had picked up HARPER’S ISLAND last spring, I was intrigued: killing off attendees of a wedding party on a secluded island every week sounded like it could be Agatha Christie-style fun, especially with the decision to make it a limited series with a set end date. It had the potential — and I surmised this after seeing a few preview clips during last year’s upfront presentations – to be the sort of television event that seems such a distant idea now. Dreaming, in this case, is for suckers.
HARPER’S ISLAND doesn’t aspire to be anything but a means to repurpose old slasher films and gory teen flicks where melodramatic pretty folk get sliced up with the kind of visceral uninhibitedness that somehow dictates that all horror movie deaths must be done as grisly as possible. And in a way, it isn’t so bad: HARPER’S ISLAND isn’t the kind of suspenseful thriller you would ostensibly want it to be, but is rather the silly, preposterous train wreck that you can’t look away from.
Review: RESCUE ME
By: Aleks Chan
After 18 months of strike-ridden delay, RESCUE ME, FX’s smart and funny series following a ragtag team of New York firefighters, is finally back after a doozy of a fourth season – one that I feared may have spelled the end for Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary, who just might have the most multi-facetious sneer on television) and the men of 62 Truck. But as they say: time can heal even the deepest wounds.
Focus has been diverted away from the eternally melodramatic Gavin family and back to the firehouse, where a French journalist (Karina Lombard of THE 4400) is interviewing the team for her book about the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, thereby bringing RESCUE ME’s emotional core back to the foreground, hearkening back to where the show started creatively: ripping open old wounds of tragedy while juxtaposing those moments with those of inspired humor. RESCUE ME is once again the show that can make you laugh, cry, and twist your stomach into knots all at the same time.
Bob Saget Reveals His Guess for HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER”s ‘Mother’
Bob Saget may not know who the mother is on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, the hit CBS show in which he narrates, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have one helluva theory. One that we’ll get to immediately after a brief trip down memory lane (oh yes, this adorable TV Addict in training loved him some FULL HOUSE) and a few questions about Saget’s new show, SURVIVING SUBURBIA which premieres tonight on ABC following DANCING WITH THE STARS.
Now I know you must get this a lot, but I feel an uncontrollable urge to tell you that I grew up on FULL HOUSE.
You didn’t turn it into a drinking game did you?
Umm… no, although that certainly would have made for a far more interesting drive home as our parents raced from my Grandmother’s apartment on Friday night to ensure they’d make it for the start of DALLAS. But I digress.
At what point during the run of FULL HOUSE did it click for you that you’d forever be associated with Danny Tanner?
We were on for eight years, never got a good review and for the first four years we weren’t getting great ratings but ABC believed in it so they would run it on both Tuesday and Fridays for the longest time. Then they started “TGIF” and the show took off. That’s when I realized that I was the Richie Cunningham, the straight guy on a show which was done by Jeff Franklin and Bob Boyett, who did HAPPY DAYS, LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY and MORK AND MINDY, so there was kind of a blueprint for what the characters were going to be like. John [Stamos] was the Fonz, and Dave [Coulier] was Ralph or Pootsie depending on how you look at it. Being the straight guy was weird for me, I would get frustrated and I was nuts while we were shooting the show which is part of the reason why the cast has stayed so close because I was honest with them. I was constantly saying, “How am I saying this?” I’m the guy getting all the sugar coated lines, but I was lucky to have a job and it was a good job that allowed me to sum up all the love that I had for my own children, put it into the kids. I just embraced, I’m the one who said let me be a clean freak, let him dust bust, let him hug his kids a lot, have all these qualities that make him look even more fruity pebbles.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
CHUCK (8PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
With THE BIG BIG BANG THEORY, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and GOSSIP GIRL all airing old episodes tonight, it’s CHUCK versus the REPEATS. Which means you really have no excuse not to tune into tonight’s brand new episode that has Chuck coming face-to-face with his TV dad played by Scott Bakula.
GREEK (8PM ABC Family)
When Casey and Ashleigh begin to doubt Rebecca’s work as a mole and suspect that she may be a double agent for Frannie, we begin to wonder if the GREEK writers may have spent a little too much time watching 24 on their hiatus.
SURVIVING SUBURBIA (9:30PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
If Bob Saget wanted to distance himself from his roots on FULL HOUSE, he sure succeeded: he’s gone from in-over-his-head doting father to a cad of a ne’er do well husband. That wouldn’t be so bad if SURVIVING SUBURBIA wasn’t like every mid-’90s sitcom that already ended (or was canceled). Perhaps Saget should stick to stand-up and his narrator gig on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, both of which are far funnier than this. — Aleks Chan
CASTLE (10PM ABC)
A woman found frozen at a construction side leads Beckett and Castle to reopen a cold case. COLD CASE, really? You’d think a best-selling author like Richard Castle would know a thing or two about plagiarism, we’re just sayin’
