Today’s TV Addict Top 5: New Fall Shows We’re Buzzing About
With the new Fall television season kicking off this week, we thought now would be as good a time as any to spotlight five of our favorite pilots that you may wish to consider setting your DVR (or if you’re in Canada, PVR!) for.
BLINDSPOT
From the moment the tattoo-covered-naked-body of star Jaimie Alexander was first introduced to us TV Addicts, the world has been buzzing about BLINDSPOT. A buzz that has only gotten stronger over the summer thanks to creator Martin Gero’s (LA COMPLEX) ridiculously intriguing premise: An very attractive woman wakes up in a duffle bag with a number of tattoos all over her body and has absolutely no idea who she is. Coupled with an easy-to-follow episodic conceit: Aformentioned woman solves crimes with thanks to clues hidden within her tattooed body while at the same time realizing she may-or-may-not be some sort of super agent who can speak multiple languages and kick everyone’s butt! (Airs Mondays at 10PM on NBC)
SUPER GIRL
Is there such a thing as too many superhero shows? There may be, but we sure as heck aren’t about to draw the line at this new entry from the the gifted storytellers behind ARROW and THE FLASH (Greg Berlanti and Co.) In fact, the only question surrounding SUPER GIRL is how the show will fare on the older-skewing Tiffany Network (CBS) versus Berlanti’s traditional home that is The CW. (Premieres Monday October 26 at 8:30PM on CBS)
THE GRINDER
Despite its not-very-google-friendly-title, THE GRINDER was one of our most enjoyable surprises of the screener-palooza that was this past month. Rob Lowe and Fred Savage are completely believable as brothers and have the kind of chemistry you just can’t fake. We only wish THE MINDY PROJECT were still airing on FOX so we could fill our Tuesday with back-to-back-to-back comedies. (Premieres Tuesday September 29 at 8PM on FOX)
QUANTICO
If you hear a faint beating in the background while you’re reading this, it’s our heart… which hasn’t stopped racing since viewing the adrenaline fueled pilot. Like last season’s big ratings winner HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, QUANTICO uses a similar flashback style to uncover the mystery surrounding one of the biggest attacks on New York City since 9/11. Unlike HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, you’ll actually care and be rooting for the young group of FBI trainees that the show revolves around! (Premieres Sunday September 27 at 10PM on ABC)
CODE BLACK
If you’ve been missing your weekly dose of medical jargon since the good-ol-days of ER, or your weekly dose of Marcia Gay Harden since the dearly departed TROPHY WIFE (Seriously, still not over it), you won’t want to miss this Harden top-lined medical drama. (Premieres Wednesday September 30 at 10PM on CBS)

He’s The Best: Desmin Borges Talks YOU’RE THE WORST
There are endless reasons as to why so many people have fallen hard for FXX’s edgy new comedy, YOU’RE THE WORST. The brilliant writing, the raw and truthfulness to each character, and the hilariously awkward situations they get themselves into week after week. While Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere) drive the show, Edgar brings something a little different to the table. From the very first episode it was quite clear that there was so much more to this adorably charming, selfless, breakfast cooking man, than just the fact that he suffers from PTSD. Borges’ Edgar brings so much light and hope to the show. Whether it’s making a fun-filled Sunday Funday for the gang or offering words of encouragement to Lindsay, he’s that guy you always want around. Slowly throughout the first season Edgar made Jimmy, Gretchen, and Lindsay (Kether Donohue) better people, just by being in their lives. He continues to make us laugh this season on the FXX hit! I caught up with Borges about his preparation for the role, his initial reaction to the script, Edgar and Lindsay’s strange chemistry, and what we can look forward to on tonight’s episode.
Your character, Edgar has PTSD. How did you channel that character? What kind of research did you do for that?
Desmin Borges: I did a lot of ground work trying to research PTSD online and I found out kind of rather quickly that a couple of my close friend’s dads had PTSD and I hadn’t known about it and I’ve known them for over eighteen years. Once I found that out I kind of started to think about the ways that they would act and the stories they would tell, and one of the things I focused mainly on was how being as someone who was close to them for eighteen years, I had no idea they suffered from PTSD. That was one of the things I definitely wanted to bring over to Edgar because when you’re dealing with anybody who is dealing with those certain issues you can’t tell just walking down the street. The things we wanted to focus on were that he was a hopeless romantic, extremely loyal, and ready to put anybody in a chokehold that screws with his friends. Within his PTSD we wanted to find the lows of it and we actually had a vet come in and talk to the writers. We spoke to him and he basically told his entire life story of going into the army, starting to deal with his issues, and coming back out, dealing with his issues, then going back in. I would say I probably got the most amount of help from him because some of the things he went into, you don’t ever read those types of stories on the internet so it was a great insight. One thing that he weighed in on a lot was that when you’re on the upwards trajectory of PTSD, which is where we find Edgar he’s in a pretty good place right now. They like to do things like normally people, go to the movies, hang out with their friends, watch football, go on dates, and play put-put golf and try to live their life as “normally as possibly” whatever that means. I also regimented my life, I wore the same types of clothes five days a week, I was getting up at the same time, I was working out at the same time, going to sleep at the same time. Just to kind of give myself that sort of structure that I would have had doing two tours in Iraq, in the Army.
Aside from reading about Edgar, what do you remember reading in the Pilot script that made you want to do this show?
I’ve worked with Stephen (Falk) previously on his show NEXT CALLER that we never quite made it to the air. But whenever I get a text or call from Stephen saying that he’s got something going on I’m always pretty quick to jump on, on any project that he is working on because I love the way he tells stories so damn much. I love the fact that even though Edgar is a “sidekick” you don’t ever stress the fact that he has to be the ethnic sidekick. He is ethnic, yes, but its not necessarily about that, we are telling this universal story through a very specific lens. With the character Edgar with PTSD we have to try and find how that dark comedy kind of strains through him. Very quickly, after the first couple of lines in the Pilot he had this moral compass about him and at the same time he had this great amount of hope.
I know Stephen recently spoke about how Lindsay and Edgar won’t ever be together. Would you like to see them together? Do you think that would be weird?
I think they would be interesting together. I think they’re a fun pair, they have really great chemistry. They both kind of give each other what they want and need in relationships, they unexpectedly find that in themselves, which I think is really interesting. But at the same time I know how tender Edgar is and how alcoholic-y Lindsay is and I think they should tread the waters lightly and if it turns out they are better just as friends, I have no problem with that as well.
If you could have your own Sunday Funday, what would you do?
Oh man! You know, it’s football season so I play a lot of fantasy football and I’m really big into the Chicago Bears. My Sunday Funday is kind of all around that, which is pretty amazing! I wake up super early, get some bloody Mary’s going. I make myself a delectable breakfast, maybe steak and eggs, then I go in and start making some wings or spice up some sweet potato. Usually have some friends with me, which is always nice and then after the first round of games I usually go out to brunch with my lady. Then I usually fall asleep on the couch after watching more football. That to me sounds like one hell of a day! If it wasn’t football season, I’d be sleeping in, taking a nice bath, eating a nice brunch, having some bloody Mary’s and then come back and sleep. I think that’s what Sunday’s are for, sleeping till the next day.
I like the cooking, that’s a lot like Edgar!
Thank you, I can’t remember if Stephen and I talked before the Edgar thing or if that kind of just came up incidentally, I can’t remember what came first the chicken or the egg.
What can you tell us about this week’s episode?
There’s a house vote that’s taken and Jimmy is finally on the losing end. That’s in favor of Gretchen having some friends over and having a party in the apartment, which Edgar views as another opportunity to continue to court Lindsay. Low and behold Mr. Paul (Allan McLeod) shows up and shit get’s cray!
You can watch Desmin in an all new episode of YOU’RE THE WORST tonight at 10:30PM on FXX.

We Shine The Spotlight on LIFE IN PIECES Star Thomas Sadoski
Thomas Sadoski charmed us on the Aaron Sorkin addictive drama, THE NEWSROOM and captivated us on THE SLAP this time around he’s looking to make us laugh on his hilarious new comedy, LIFE IN PIECES. I caught up with the immensely talented actor about his new show, transitioning from darker work, and everything we need to know about his character, Matt on the new CBS comedy.
How was it for you coming off of intense dramas like THE NEWSROOM and THE SLAP and transitioning into a light comedy like LIFE IN PIECES?
Thomas Sadoski: It’s been a lot of fun! To show up everyday with the sole purpose to make people laugh, that just feels really nice. Especially just coming of off super intense work and doing some pretty heavy lifting on THE NEWSROOM and THE SLAP it’s fun to have a good time with this stuff and it’s also challenging. I don’t think it’s something that I feel overly comfortable with, the idea of that comedy format. So it’s a great challenge and that’s part for the reason I took it because I want to continue to challenge myself and push myself and I have the opportunity to learn from some of the greats in the business. Dianne Wiest, James Brolin, Colin Hanks, Dan Bakkedahl, Betsy Brandt, Angelique Cabral, Zoe Lister Jones, they are amazing talents in their own right and they are very good at this stuff. I get to challenge myself and learn and grow and I’m having a lot of fun doing it. There was no down side to that.
What drew you to the show?
I loved the format of it, I thought it was brilliantly written. Then they started to talk about the cast they were assembling and it was a no brainer. I think at that point they had Dianne, Colin, and Zoe and I was like, “I’m in!” The opportunity for Dianne Wiest to play your mom, I’ll do whatever! I love the show I loved the script, I had a great talk with Justin (Adler) our writer and Jason Winer our executive producer and it made a lot of sense to me. We share a lot of the same world views in a lot of ways and it felt like it was going to be a good time, that we were going to have a lot of fun making.
What can you tell us about your character, Matt?
Matt is a man in his late thirties, who due to circumstances that are outside of his control has found himself having to live back home with his parents. He has a job that his father helped him get at a company he doesn’t particularly care about. However, he has met and is starting to fall in love with his boss, who is also going through some tricky stuff too. She has recently called off her engagement but because of her financial situation is forced to live with her ex-fiancé. So, they are trying to figure out how they can date given the nature of the boss and employee relationship but also fact that he lives at home with his parents and she lives with her ex-fiancé. Matt is the middle child in this large family, and all of the amazing-horrible stuff that goes along with being the middle child in a family of very successful people.
There’s a hilarious scene with Matt’s father that takes place at his fake funeral. What can you tell us about that scene? How was shooting that?
(Laughs) That was one of our last days on the Pilot, we had so much fun with that. That was the first day that we were all together as a group because we had broken off and shot our own individual stories over the course of the week that we were making the Pilot. It was the first time we were able to get together as a family unit and spend time together and it just clicked right away. You could feel it in the room once we were all in there together and everyone started doing their thing and everyone was laughing at everybody’s scenes. Everyone was so respectful of everyone else’s work, it was fantastic. The sequence just took off because of that. That was a really good day!
What shows are you loving on TV right now? Any shows you are binge watching?
You know, I’m not a binge watcher. I’m probably just too old for it but if I watch too much of the same show back to back I start to forget what makes the show so special and exciting. It just becomes this thing that I’m immersed in and I’m living through for the next couple of days until I get to the end of the series, then I get to the end of the series and I need a break. Rather than looking forward to it and being able to clock what makes it special and unique. I’m really excited for the new season of FARGO; I’ll definitely be checking that out. I’m really excited about BING BANG THEORY and to see what they do this year.
You can watch Thomas in the series premiere of LIFE IN PIECES tonight at 8:30 on CBS.

Aquaman Appearance Teased In Deleted Scene From CW’s THE FLASH
Season 1 of THE FLASH arrives on Blu-Ray & DVD September 22 and Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive look at a deleted scene from the pilot episode which mentions another DC Justice Leaguer: Aquaman. In the scene, Barry (who does not yet have his powers) and Joe discuss a series of stories that Barry’s been investigating when Joe quips, “Yeah, and last month you disappeared to Amnesty Bay to investigate a man who could talk to fish.”
While Aquaman could appear on The Flash in the future, fans should not hold their breath about it being Jason Momoa, who’s set to play him in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. At Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson addressed why the TV and movie universes don’t make sense for Warner Bros. and DC, saying:
“The focus on a single universe of characters with connected storylines could end up handcuffing our creators into trying to work with the same storyline or force them to hold back characters or introduce certain characters. Ultimately, it hinders the ability for someone like Bruno Heller to come in and create ‘Gotham.'”
