BONES Spoilers: Executive Producer Michael Peterson Teases What’s Coming Next in Season 11
The two-part season premiere of BONES has concluded and with the mystery of Booth’s whereabouts were solved, he and Brennan will be returning to their old jobs. But will the rest of the season be business as usual? BONES producer Michael Peterson has some teasers for you.
The Focus is on Booth and Brennan. “That was definitely the focus coming into this season [and] when Jon Collier and I met with and talked to David and Emily, our focus 100% is making sure to have as much time as possible with Booth and Brennan. That is the heart of the show. We will challenge ourselves to make sure to get as much screen time as possible. David gave us a note early on and he said ‘go back and watch early seasons, like Seasons 1 and 2, and just really kind of see all the interactions that we were able to have early on’ and it was great, I did. I spent my hiatus watching all these episodes over and over again and it also inspired a lot of storylines. For instance, watching the pilot, it talks a lot about the first book that Temperance, that the Brennan character writes and how it’s inspired by each one of the characters on the show and that led to a fun storyline that is coming up I think in Episode 4 where there’s a twist in Brennan’s latest novel that is a sharp departure, but it leads to some pretty good back and forth between Booth and Brennan as a result of it.”
Does Brennan Forgive Booth too Easily for Lying to Her Before His Disappearance? “Well, we’ll go into it some, but last year was very specific [with] Booth lying about gambling versus what happened this year and I think that if it had just been a one-parter and David was reunited with her after the first episode I think that Brennan would have hit him a lot harder as far as accusations, but through the course of the second episode, what we’re trying to get to is she understands who she is better through this case, that she belongs at the lab. In discovering where she belongs she also understands Booth better, that Booth is this man of action. The way that we say it internally here is Booth is a little bit of a Superman and Superman can’t just sit by and watch as people suffer. There really is no retiring for him, so by the end of the second episode Brennan understands that she belongs in the lab and that her Superman, Booth, belongs out there in the field saving people. She understands him in a way that probably nobody else could, so while a lot of people would yell at him saying you lied to me, she understands it’s just who he is and she wouldn’t want him to be any other way.”
What’s Coming for Cam, Arastoo, Hodgins, Angela and Aubrey? “If you’ve seen the first two episodes for Cam and Arastoo, we’ll be following their relationship very closely after what goes down in the first couple of episodes. Also, Hodgins and Angela in Episode 10, there will be a major shake-up for them and it also is going to be related to Aubrey. That’s our mid-season finale. It’s an episode that was actually…originally we were considering for our season opener, so we’re going to start with a quite literal bang, but that episode will be very interesting as far as how it will change the trajectory of the rest of the season. When Jon Collier and I were handed this gift to be able to work on this show and be able to be showrunners this year we wanted to make sure that we shook things up, and so there are going to be many, many major arcs. We don’t want to get complacent in the fact that Booth and Brennan are married and everyone is coupled up. We want to challenge them, but not in any kind of artificial way. We want it to be character-led. So, we’re going to have lots of arcs going for each of the people this season.”
The SLEEPY HOLLOW Crossover and Big Bads in Season 11. “There’s the SLEEPY HOLLOW episode, [which has] a very interesting version of a big bad, which is in that one we’re going to find two sets of remains. One of them is going to be very, very old and that’s going to be more of a big bad from the Sleepy Hollow universe. That’s going to be interesting in itself. Again, episode 10 is probably going to be the biggest bad that we’re going to come across and I really don’t want to give too much away there, but, as I said, it’s going to be something that impacts Hodgins, Angela and Aubrey very directly.”
Going Undercover Again. “We will definitely be going undercover again this season and I think it’s going to be so good that maybe next year she’ll change her answer as far as what her favorite undercover episode is. It’s going to be a different version of undercover than we’ve ever done before, so it’s going to be very playful, competitive. It’s unlike any undercover we’ve done before, so we’re very excited. I believe that’s going to be 11.09.”
BONES airs Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
We Shine the Spotlight on CASUAL Star Michaela Watkins
After a career spent stealing scenes as a supporting player in such TV Addict favorites like TROPHY WIFE, TRANSPARENT and WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER, Michaela Watkins is about to have her much-deserved moment. Premiering this week on HULU, Watkins stars in Jason Reitman’s CASUAL, as a recently separated mother who finds herself back in the dating world after a seventeen year hiatus. I caught up with Watkins to talk about her hilarious career path, her darkly funny and honestly raw performance in CASUAL and what she’s loving on television right now.
You worked on a lot of great shows recently, WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER, TRANSPARENT, TROPHY WIFE, how were those experiences for you? What did you take away from working on each show?
Watkins: I feel really lucky that those are the little tribes I sort of fell into. It was so much fun working on them, it almost feels like the product at the end, you feel like you’re making something really silly and great, and then when it comes together its just icing on top because the process of working on it with everybody is so fun. It’s the best, to me they are some of the most interesting people, doing what we are doing and I feel like they all make me better.
What was your initial reaction to reading the scripts for TRANSPARENT?
My initial reaction was, fuck yeah! It’s unlike anything that is on television and I know Jill (Soloway) and I know that when her father came out as trans, what a complicated time that was and then seeing her put all of that complexity into the script and come up with something so beautiful and so specifically her. When she said Jeffery Tambor would probably play Maura and I just thought, okay, game over. I’ve worked with Jill a few times and the way she conducts her art, it’s very free form and it’s very loose, creative, and collaborative and I think even when you read the scripts, the scripts are great. What happens when you’re in the room and working with her is a whole other ball game because she basically says, “throw my script away, let’s do something totally different.”
Your new show, CASUAL premieres tonight, what can you tell us about your character, Valerie?
I was just saying this to somebody, it’s really weird because I do a lot of comedy and some of it is a little darker and leans towards dramedy. This definitely falls in the dramedy category, it feels like an independent film and because of that it’s been a real trip. I can really take the time with the scripts and the show to get to know the character, in a way where they feel like such real people to the degree that I am kind of nervous and scared because I feel so vulnerable. The character is so close to me, she’s a little more reserved than I am. Whatever feeling I’m having, you’ll know I’m feeling it at the time because I probably overshare and that’s not like Valerie at all, but everything else does. She processes her pain, and being cheated on and going through a divorce. I don’t have kids but I have nieces and nephews around the same age as the girl who plays my daughter and all of it just feels so real, and the writing is so good that it feels so natural. I guess I should tell you she’s a little controlling, a little pragmatic, she’s got her own sense of humor. At the beginning of the show she’s just really sad and really uncomfortable with being a thirty –nine-year-old single woman. It’s a little terrifying for her because this is all new and she makes some interesting mistakes, but none of it feels campy, none of it feels wacky, it all feels like the exact kind of thing I would do. When I was single in my mid-thirties I was so freaked out about dating because I realized it’s a different world in the way it is now. People may not call you and that’s strange. (Laughs)
Will we see a lot into her dating life?
Yeah, you will. Also into her messed up psyche. This is a show about a brother and sister and their relationship and they are a little dysfunctional and for different reasons. They help each other but they also bring out each others crazy. It’s a show about family and dating, but mainly a show about family. There’s a lot of love there, it may not be the healthiest kind but there’s definitely a lot of love.
Aside from an introduction to your character, Valerie what else can we look forward to in the Pilot?
There’s a really great shot of a naked butt (Laughs) it’s not mine! In the first couple of episodes it’s really ramping up, stuff doesn’t go too crazy until the fourth episode, then it goes on a real journey. Think of it as an independent film, the first three episodes are the first act, then the next three and four are the second act and that’s when all of the complications begin to kick in, then the third act, things just go off the rails. When I read one of the episodes I had to go for a walk after, I was so freaked out by what happens. In the first two it’s really getting to know the characters, it’s really great dialogue, it’s shot really beautifully. It’s got that Jason Reitman thing where it’s sort of stylized and it’s really natural, the music is really great and minimal and it’s used smartly.
What shows are you loving on TV right now?
In terms of comedy, I’m loving DIFFICULT PEOPLE because it’s got some of the best lines I’ve ever heard in it. Do you like CATASTROPHE?
I really really love CATASTROPHE!
It’s great! I love HOUSE OF CARDS, TOGETHERNESS, I started watching ORPHAN BLACK, that shows so good. MAD MEN was my favorite show ever and I’m so sad that’s over. I think I’m going to start watching YOU’RE THE WORST, because everybody says that’s so great.
You can watch Michaela in CASUAL today on Hulu.

We Shine the Spotlight on YOU’RE THE WORST Star Aya Cash
It’s hard to not fall head over heels in love with FXX’s YOU’RE THE WORST. From the quick witted jokes to the painfully realistic character portrayals, the show is utterly entertaining. The person at the center of the crazy, ridiculous world of YTW is Gretchen, played brilliantly by Aya Cash. Whether she’s casually doing drugs with on-again-off-again boyfriend Jimmy or setting her apartment on fire, Gretchen is arguably the most out of control out of the whole bunch. Cash effortlessly makes you love and hate Gretchen, a balance that is surprisingly hard to find on television nowadays. I caught up with the hilarious actress about her favorite scenes from this season, what drew her to Gretchen as a character, and her plan to make a musical episode happen if there is a season three.
What was your initial reaction after reading the pilot? What drew you to Gretchen as a character?
Aya Cash: I think I was just excited to play a woman who was completely flawful as opposed to flawless, also behaving just as badly as the boys and it had an incredible amount of vulnerability and I just thought that was a really lovely combination, especially in a comedy. I thought the writing was brilliant, it was an easy decision for me.
How do you think Gretchen has grown since the first season? Aside from her and Jimmy going a bit crazy trying to not end up like the “Sweater People” do you think she has matured being with him?
I think as we just saw in the third episode when she tries to reconnect with her party girl friends and they are all grownups now, except one of them is behaving much worse than she is. She is sort of stuck in this middle ground, trying to be the crazy, out there, party girl that she used to be and not. I think we all go through that when we grow up, having to shed our former selves and it’s a painful shedding. We hold onto things that we identify about ourselves, like partying hard for Gretchen, that’s who she thinks she should be, but she may not be that person anymore, or she may be, you’ll see.
How do you think Lindsay is going to handle single life? We’ve seen in the last couple of episodes that Edgar has developed feelings for her, how will we see that play out?
Poor Edgar! I can’t give anything away but it’s not like she’s been treating him well so far. I do think that there is obvious chemistry and the writers are going to play with that. Lindsay is a mess (Laughs) I wouldn’t wish her on anyone. I mean, I wish her on the viewers because she’s amazing television but I wouldn’t wish her in life on anyone.
Do you think you could be friends with any of them in real life?
I don’t think any of them would be friends with me. Edgar would be friends with everyone! I’m way too boring for Jimmy and Gretchen. I’m definitely a sweater person, unfortunately. I love fall, I love a good sweater.
How would you describe your perfect Sunday funday?
We always get asked that and I always give the most boring answers! I’m always like, I like to read a book and go for a walk. Let’s change it up and say I get shit faced at six in the morning and then go steal a car, drive to Long Island, then jump in the ocean. That’s my perfect Sunday funday! (Laughs)
Are there any episodes or scenes you’re really excited for the fans to see?
I’m really excited for them to season Sunday funday which is episode eight. There are stunts, costumes, it’s going to be airing around Halloween. I’ve always wanted to make it far enough in a TV show to get to a theme episode, cause that’s when you feel like you’ve really made it on a show. We have a theme episode, season three is when you do the musical episode so I’m really hoping for that.
I’d love to see Jimmy sing.
Chris can sing! We can all sing!
Really!
That’s the thing we are all insanely jealous of Kether. Kether’s the best, she’s amazing. We can all definitely pull our on, and we’ve all really, really pitched a musical episode for next year.
What shows are you loving on TV right now?
I just watched all of MR. ROBOT, which is like, beyond brilliant. I think the acting is brilliant, the writing is brilliant, it’ beautiful shot and it’s just sort of all these elements that came together and made a perfect show. I just started PENNY DREADFUL and I know I kind of missed the boat but it is so disgusting, upsetting, and wonderful. I watch a lot of TV, ask me next week and I’ll have a whole new set of shows.
You can watch Aya on an all new episode of YOU’RE THE WORST tonight at 10:30 on FXX.

Fall TV Preview: QUANTICO
The Premise: A diverse group of recruits has arrived at the FBI Quantico Base for training. They are the best, the brightest and the most vetted, so it seems impossible that one of them is suspected of masterminding the biggest attack on New York City since 9/11. “Quantico” stars Priyanka Chopra as Alex Parrish, Josh Hopkins as Liam O’Connor, Jake McLaughlin as Ryan Booth, Aunjanue Ellis as Miranda Shaw, Johanna Braddy as Shelby Wyatt, Tate Ellington as Simon Asher, Graham Rogers as Caleb Haas and Yasmine Al Massri as Nimah Amin. “Quantico” was written by Joshua Safran. Executive producers are Joshua Safran, Mark Gordon, Nicholas Pepper, Jake Coburn and Robert Sertner. “Quantico” is produced by ABC Studios.
The Premiere Date: Sunday, Sept. 29 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT) on ABC (CTV in Canada)
The Competition: CSI: CYBER (CBS) and NBC’S NFL FOOTBALL
The Quick Take: Despite an cringe-worthy elevator pitch that screams, “It’s GREY’S ANATOMY meets HOMELAND!” QUANTICO completely works. From the shocking opening scene revealing a terrible 9/11-esque attack to the pilot’s crazy cliffhanger of an ending, QUANTICO played like a roller coaster ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat (or in our case, couch) for the entirity of its forty-four minute run time. Seriously. Complete with all the elements that make a great pilot: Interesting and diverse characters coupled with some solid storytelling and pitch perfect ending, QUANTICO should most certainly be on your list of shows to catch this fall.
QUANTICO: Watch the First 8 Minutes of the New ABC Series
The Bottom Line: We’re in for two reasons. (1) We detest football, and (2) should this show be a success, we’re mighty curious what season two and dare we say season three look like!
