The Good, The Bad And The Ugly About Amazon’s New Series BACK STABBER
Overall, ‘Back Stabber’ is a must watch this summer; whether it’s to watch and take notes on what not to do, or to admire its core message of acceptance, the creator’s extreme dedication or it’s somewhat low budget feel to the show.
Regardless of why you watch it, you will walk away with multiple impacting messages fed to you, openly gay creator Ryan Zamo said, “I’ve always been an advocate for acceptance, equality and embracing those that are different, not just in LGBT but acceptance of race, religion, sex etc. I wrote the show around these ideals, not by throwing it in your face, but making viewers fall in love with the characters and their relationships to each other.” With the wide span of characters in ‘Back Stabber’ coming from all different walks of life, the show does successfully project the idea that we should see people for who they are, not what they are.
-Message of acceptance and embracing each other: GOOD!
In general, the plot and writing is on point, it’s down to earth and definitely follows it advertised message of acceptance, anti-bullying and embracing everyone for who they are. As the season goes on, you can tell a lot of thought went into the writing, Zamo said the biggest influence on his writing came from the NBC show ‘The Blacklist’. Being an influence on his writing, it makes sense that ‘Back Stabber’ has not stop twists, tons of drama, and some hot guys fighting. And throughout Season 1 of the new amazon show, you can see the spots inspired by The Blacklist, like its ability to tie in [what you would think are irrelevant at the time] unanswered moments in previous episodes, that turn out to be bombshell plot twists later on.
– Overall writing and story- GOOD!
– Hot guys- GOOD!
The new series was said to be created 7 years ago by Ryan Zamo in film school, and he fought to create the series because of its message and his advocacy for anti-bullying and acceptance. So last year, Zamo decided to produce the entire series himself after having no interest from anyone else to do so. And, with no budget, season 1 premiered last weekend with a final production value of less than $2,000.
– Determination and aspirations: GOOD!
– Low budget- Good and Bad!
However, doing every role in post-production himself, the show is a bit rough through episodes 1 and 2 [These 2 episodes combined are the original 1-hour pilot, and got split when the show decided to go half hour instead.] Like most shows, you can tell production value jumped after the pilot [now ep 1 and ep 2], Ryan said, “Again, we had no budget, and wanted it to look great! So, instead of eating for 3 weeks, we spent all of our money on nicer equipment. We used it, and returned before the 30-day policy was up. We also added additional equipment starting on episode 6… when we realized how good of an idea it was. It was rough giving it back, we loved the new equipment, but we seriously needed to switch it up from ramon noodles.”
– episodes 1 and 2- UGLY!
– ep 3 through 11- GOOD!
– Ramon noodles- meh. Depends on the day.
Overall though, I realized after re-binging the full season for the second time, that if you watch it for its entertainment value you will love it. Sit back and enjoy it, if you watch it hoping to catch its flaws, you’ll pull your hair out until episode 6.
I’m glad I did my research on the show, or else I would have stopped watching after the first or second episode, which I think many who wrote reviews on Amazon did…. since their comments about low budget nightmares cannot be applied after episode 3. And lastly, it’s supporting a great cause and does have a powerful message that the world needs to hear, accept everyone and embrace the difference!
Overall: Amazons’ new series ‘Back Stabber’- GOOD!

6:30 p.m.–7:20 p.m. Riverdale Pilot Screening and Q&A — Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. Based on the iconic characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Supergirl, Blindspot, Everwood), this one-hour drama is a bold, subversive take on the surreality of small-town life. As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — and not follow in his dad’s footsteps — despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves — which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother, Alice (Mädchen Amick) — aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between she and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. Riverdale makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars and executive producers. Riverdale is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. Room 6BCF
7:25–8:15 p.m. Frequency Pilot Screening and Q&A — Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, Frank Sullivan, an undercover cop, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. Always believing her dad died in disgrace as a corrupt cop, Raimy set forth to surpass him in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to detective. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect — across two decades — over Frank’s vintage ham radio in the garage. Where once Frank was lost in the shadows of his undercover work in 1996, he has now miraculously been found by his now-grown daughter in 2016. As they forge a new relationship while working together in two time periods to close an unsolved serial murder investigation, their emotional connection transcends time to not only repair the broken bonds of their family, but also defy fate and change the course of destiny. Frequency makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars Peyton List (The Tomorrow People, The Flash), Riley Smith (Nashville, The Messengers) and Mekhi Phifer (Torchwood, ER), along with executive producers Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, U.S. version of Being Human) and Jennifer Gwartz (Lethal Weapon, Veronica Mars). 8:20–9:15 p.m. Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A — Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend — the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, aka Jack the Ripper — finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells’ London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the Utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson’s temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on H.G. Wells, the Father of Science Fiction. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells’ War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau and more. An epic love story charged with danger and adventure, Time After Time gives an unpredictable spin on the mythology of H.G. Wells by looking at the world of today through the eyes of yesterday. Time After Time makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). THE LAST SHIP Teasers: Nine Things to Know About Season 3
The Nathan James is headed to Asia when THE LAST SHIP returns for its third season as the cure is spread across the globe and humanity starts attempting to make life normal again. Captain Tom Chandler has been promoted to the Chief of Naval Operations, which keeps him in the US, while the Nathan James is now captained by XO Slattery and is in Asia for a humanitarian mission. As the action moves to the east and many of our characters begin the season in different places, here’s what you need to know about the season 3 premiere:
Rebuilding. It’s 154 days into Michener’s presidency and the American reconstruction plan has gotten underway. Power has been restored to much of the southwestern states. The new government is also working with the banks to restore the economy and instituting rations to keep food and required goods moving.
Rachel’s Fate. We will know within the first two minutes of the season premiere whether she survived the shooting.
A New Virus and Political Turmoil. Things are not as good in southern Japan as they are in the US. Dead bodies are strewn about and mothers are nursing their dying children. They have access to the cure, but it’s not working. Apparently China’s President Peng has been hoarding the cure for the Chinese, so it seems that a mutated virus is burning across other Asian countries (something that Rachel said wasn’t possible). Some members of the US government think Peng is trying to make a play for more of the region, but others warn that he’s their only real ally there and they can’t rush to condemn him. The rumour is that Peng killed the rest of the Chinese leaders in the state bunker and then waited out the plague next to their rotting bodies, which should give you an idea of how far he’s willing to go to hold on to his power.
New Life. Kara and Danny’s adorable son, Frankie, has been born, but Danny hasn’t met him yet. Kara is on land with Valerie (who is picking up some strange signal frequencies) and working for President Michener, while Danny is on the ship.
Moving the Action to China. Most of the Nathan James crew is over in the South China Sea, distributing the cure to other countries. At the same time, Michener has organized an Asian summit, which Peng is scheduled to attend, and Michener wants to send Chandler there to represent the US. If Peng won’t play ball, the U.S. is prepared to back someone else. Valerie tags along with Chandler as tech support.
An Old Flame and a New Ally. Chandler is surprised to meet Sasha, an old friend, over in China. She’s acting as a liaison to the Chinese government and it seems the two of them have a romantic history.
Political Confrontation. Chandler isn’t a man to hold back, so he goes for the jugular pretty publicly soon after stepping foot in China (as you can see in the sneak peek below). He makes it clear that he’s not afraid of Peng and the U.S. is prepared to spread the cure throughout the region.
MIA. As we head into the second hour of the premiere, someone makes a big move against the Nathan James crew in Vietnam, separating the leadership from the rest of the crew on the ship as they are taken hostage. Chandler, Wolf and Sasha head to Vietnam to try and get to the crew and we meet a new pilot who joins forces with them.
An Unstable Presidency? Things are also not as cherry back in the U.S. as we were led to believe. A lot of people don’t believe in the rationing system and prefer the old capitalist ways. Michener was also unelected, so there’s been pushback against his presidency.
Don’t miss the two-hour season premiere of THE LAST SHIP tonight (June 19) beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on TNT.

TRUE DETECTIVE Season 3: Truly a Mystery
As it is the time of year when series are either renewed or cancelled, fans of the popular HBO crime drama will be excited to learn that HBO has renewed the contract for the crime anthology True Detective, through 2018. HBO has locked producer Nic Pizollato in for this and several other projects, including The Magnificent Seven, which premieres in September of this year. While this is great news for the series and the fans, season 3’s premiere date has not still not been announced with certainty.

What we Know
Despite the fact that there was quite a lot of disappointment in season 2 of the series in comparison to season 1, TD fans are screaming for a third season and now that we all know there will be a new cast each season, a lot of speculation is going on about the possibilities of the new ensemble. Other speculation goes on about whether Pizollato will work alone as he did in season 2 or with the influence of another director/writer/producer as in season 1.
Michael Lombardo of HBO told the Television Critics Association that “Pizollato is one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today.” He also stated that despite the fact that season 2 became a social media punching bag, it still generated over 12 million viewers per episode, 1 million up from season 1.

The Season 2 Curse
So what went wrong with season 2 and how could season 3 benefit from the many comparisons with season 1? While season 2 received the approval of critics from the likes of The Hollywood Reporter and Rolling Stone, the common thread line was that a lack of character development and too much action combined with uneven storytelling all affected season 2, especially when compared with the brilliance of the first season. It could be that trying to follow the lives of four main characters left the audience feeling the shallowness of those characters as they stumbled through the action-packed weekly dramas.
The pace of plot development with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey allowed for real character development down to the very still moments where the audience could actually sense the character thinking and figuring things out. Yes, people really do want to see just two cops riding around in a car talking, especiall when that comes with the brilliant acting these two brought in. Characteristics were far subtler and that is what we hope for season 3.

Subtle Character Development
There are many indirect ways to develop a character that engross a watcher allow them to decide what it mean to the character. What a character drinks shows a lot about who or where he is. McConaughey drinks Jameson as the younger sharper detective but is drinking warm Lone Star beer by the end, showing how far downhill he has slid. Likewise, James Bond’s “shaken, not stirred” martinis shows a very different officer of the law than Raylan Givens’ (Justified) whiskey straight up or John McClane (Die Hard), who starts with something out of a decanter in DH 1 and ends up drinking anything he can put in a paper bag by DH 3 and 4.
Another great tool for developing characters could be what casino game he prefers. What a person chooses to play at a casino can show you a lot about who they are – and in true literary fashion, it’s showing rather than telling. Wyatt Earp played poker, which is a strategic every-man-for-himself game of skill. It requires instinct, calculation of risk and nerves of steel. while Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks prefers blackjack, a typical game for someone who likes everything to be in order and all of it to make sense. Cooper’s calm and collected. Wyatt Earp is passionate and likes to take risks.
In True Detective season 2, it was odd that while Vince Vaughn ran the gaming house in Vinci, he never played. His game of choice may have shown us something about his character we hadn’t seen before. Or perhaps it was the fact that he never played that hints at his character. That’s brilliant, but why not bring that to the foreground and juxtapose it with other characters’ choices? The casino was a major theme in the series, but it was never used for character development, just as a set.
Who’s In?
Fewer main characters and more character development would go a long way towards re-engaging fan loyalty for season 3. Recently Olive Munn posted a photo on Instagram with the caption “True Detective Season 3” leading to even more speculation on the cast. The photo also featured Jason Bateman and TJ Miller, which would certainly be an odd ensemble for a drama. But then again, choosing Vince Vaughn for season 2 wasn’t expected either. Idris Elba is another contender, according to industry speculation. HBO hasn’t confirmed or denied at all.
Other fan sites are calling for a real bad guy this next time. Both seasons really only racked up one mysterious corpse each, although season 1 hinted at a serial killer. Why not explore his side of the story? There are also many wanting to go back to a dark, desolate location. The pace of the California locations took away from the story instead of enhancing it, according to some. The Deep South just felt so dirty and real. It’s also vastly unexplored compared to LA.
Lombardo has stated that season 3 must evolve in its own time. He takes blame for any of season 2 failings in that he pushed Pizollato into a time crunch over and over, not “allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place.” Season 1 began production in 2010 and the crew had three full years to complete its stellar achievement. Season 2 had to be complete in just 14 months, without the assistance of fellow director Cary Fukunaga.
Steve Golin of Anonymous Content, had said in one of his interviews that the scripts for season 2 were just not as good. He also stated that Nic did “not want to go with the stand alone director plan,” as he believed much of the success of season 1 rested in the partnership with Fukunaga. So an obvious answer for season three would be to bring the team back together with Pizollato at the helm.

What does all of this mean for True Detective season 3? It means we will not be seeing it in 2016. Pizzollato has been given full authority for the upcoming season, which means he can get a team of writers, get a show runner or go it alone again. With the support of Lombardo and HBO, Pizollato could put together an epic production team, and fans can be enjoying the show by 2017. So we’re going to be patient, and we hope we’re going to be handsomely rewarded.
CBS Announces its 2016-2017 Primetime Schedule
CBS is the fourth network to unveil its 2016-2017 primetime schedule during Upfronts week (see NBC, Fox and ABC’s new schedules).
CBS renewed a lot of their existing shows, which doesn’t leave many holes in their schedule. As a result, the network only ordered 8 new pilots. Like Fox, CBS is bringing some familiar properties to TV, including a reboot of MACGYVER and producing a small screen version of the film TRAINING DAY. You’ll also be seeing some familiar faces on the network this fall/winter, including Joel McHale (THE GREAT INDOORS), Matt Leblanc (MAN WITH A PLAN) and Katherine Heigl (DOUBT).
There’s also a few changes in the upcoming schedule, including NCIS: LOS ANGELES moving to Sundays and MADAM SECRETARY moving to the 9:00 p.m. spot formerly held by THE GOOD WIFE.
There’s also no word yet on LIMITLESS, but apparently CBS is shopping around for a new home for the show.
