Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Star Debra Messing Talks SMASH
Despite the fact that NBC has decided to hold off on raising the curtain on SMASH until early 2012, our excitement cannot be contained. Which is why we thought now might be as good a time as any to share an interview with star Debra Messing, who during a recent stop in Toronto to promote the series opened up about her character, the inevitable comparisons to GLEE and what it’s like working with an all-star ensemble including Anjelica Huston and Katharine McPhee.
What can you tell us about your character Julia and how she fits into the fabric of the show.
Debra Messing: I play Julia, a lyricist who along with her composing partner Tom have been writing Broadway musicals successfully for about 20 years. When you meet us we have decided to take a year off for the first time, because I’m married, have a 15 year old son and my husband and I want to adopt a baby. Then of course this idea about Marilyn Monroe sort of germinates and takes off and all of those plans are sort of turned upside down. So then it really is about this passion project, putting it together and trying to balance a creative life with a real marriage. [Read more…]

Exclusive Interview: Warren Christie Offers Fun Insight on Syfy’s New Series ALPHAS
Syfy’s new series ALPHAS invites viewers to explore a world where humans have extrasensory and other special abilities. They are not super-human, but rather, super-enhanced humans. Whether it be heightened senses, the ability to read radio waves, enhanced strength or precision marksman skills, these are just abilities we all have – but to a greater degree. Recruited by a quasi-government agency, a small group of gifted individuals use their abilities to assist with crime-fighting. But with great skill comes a price, and because these people are human after all, life is not so easy for them. Viewed as freaks, oddities, or just plain abnormal, their only safe haven is amongst themselves. Social situations and personal relationships can be awkward or even impossible. Yet because they are special, they are also great at solving crimes that may elude normal law enforcement.
During an enthusiastic interview with Warren Christie, one of the stars of the show, one thing became abundantly clear: he is excited about his new show. Describing what drew him to ALPHAS, he was quick to respond, “It was the script and the characters. There’s an amazing element to it all.” He also really admires his character, Cameron Hicks, who is gifted with hyperkinesis, which is the ability to use muscle control so precisely that he has flawless aim and enhanced motor skills. In addition, Warren shared that he also really admired how, “[Cameron] keeps picking himself up and dusting himself off. He’s trying. He’s a recovered alcoholic who’s isolated himself. But he’s opening up. He’s a fighter.” [Read more…]

Azita Ghanizada Introduces Us to the World of Syfy’s New Series ALPHAS
The much-anticipated sci-fi series ALPHAS is finally debuting on July 11th on Syfy. Optimistic about the show and her role in it is Azita Ghanizada, who portrays Rachel Pirzad, a young woman gifted with a “synesthete” ability — meaning she can temporarily enhance one of her primary senses, but only at the expense of all her other senses. So if she enhances her eyesight for a few minutes, she cannot hear during that time. It is an extraordinary ability, but one that leads to all sorts of predicaments. Fortunately, Rachel is not alone. In ALPHAS, they have a team of extra-perceptory individuals – each with their own special skill.
Azita describes ALPHAS as, “ordinary individuals with exceptional powers.” She also admits that is what initially drew her to the role. She said, “There are real human aspects to them – especially Rachel, whose family is very conservative and ethnic; so they think her ability is a curse.” Thus, the show is about self-discovery and self-acceptance as much as it is about using their amazing abilities for quasi-government purposes. As Azita explained, “Rachel is coming out of her shell. Finding out it is not a curse is huge.” Another attraction to the role was the challenge of portraying someone who is so shy and uncomfortable, which is just the opposite of herself. [Read more…]
Constance Marie Shares Her Love for ABC Family’s Summer Hit SWITCHED AT BIRTH
Feeling like she has won the lottery and handed her dream job on a gold platter, Constance Marie is not only SWITCHED AT BIRTH’s biggest cheerleader, she is also genuinely happy to be a part of such an extraordinary ensemble. She portrays Regina Vasquez, mother of one of the switched-at-birth daughters, Daphne. (Delightfully portrayed by Katie Leclerc, whose interview can be read HERE.) Not only does Regina have her own disability being a recovered alcoholic, but also her daughter Daphne is deaf. Despite these challenges, Regina and Daphne have one of the most balanced, mutually respectful mother-daughter relationships on television.
Commenting on how well-received the show has been with viewers and fans, Constance gushed, “I always knew it was a beautiful show. A recovered alcoholic who learned sign language to communicate with her daughter – beautiful!” Sharing a bit of her own personal perspective, she also revealed, “My own daughter was an IVF (in-vitro fertilization) baby, so I had the thought of: ‘What if I had the wrong baby?’” The thought is enough to make any parent tear-up at the thought of it. It is every parent’s worst nightmare. In addition, Constance could relate to the issues concerning her character’s daughter Daphne, who became deaf as a toddler. She explained, “When they were testing my baby’s hearing, one of her ears had no signal. Fortunately, the next day they were able to get the signal. But I had that thought of ‘What if my baby couldn’t hear in one ear?’ So, when I read the script, I understood Regina and how she would think. It’s that whole nature vs. nurture, and how would you react?” [Read more…]
