You’re Hired! 6 Actors Who Deserve Their Own Fall Pilot
With pilot season about to wrap up and the networks and studios putting the final touches on casting what they hope will be Hollywood’s next big thing. Or, in the case of NCIS and the CW’s MELROSE PLACE re-boot, that once famous actor whose career just so happens to be on life support (see: Chris O’Donnell and Heather Locklear.) This TV Addict thought now would be as good a time as any to highlight six actors who we believe deserve a shot to headline his, her, or their own pilot.
Liza Weil
Since Shonda Rhimes has ignored our continued pleas to page Liza Weil to Seattle Grace in an immediate effort to inject GREY’S ANATOMY with “3 cc’s” of much needed “characters worth watching,” we thought now would be as good a time as any to remind those in the business of show that Weil, having spent seven seasons stealing scenes from the denizens of Stars Hollow, would most definitely be a welcome addition to any new comedy or drama.
Dave Foley & Maura Tierney
If the CW and the seemingly endless incarnations of CSI, LAW & ORDER and NCIS have taught this TV Addict anything, it’s the following: Network executives love a proven commodity. Which is why, theTVaddict.com proudly presents a MAD ABOUT YOU for the next generation: The untitled Dave and Maura Project (Think GARY UNMARRIED but funnier.) You loved them on NEWSRADIO, and you’ll fall in love with them all over again on whatever situation one lucky showrunner (Paging Phil Simms) can build around them.
The TV Addict Nooner: UGLY BETTY, KINGS, REAPER & More!
Because we know you’d never surf the web on ‘company time,’ theTVaddict.com is proud to present what will hopefully become a new daily semi-daily feature: Our brief roundup of interesting, bizarre, surprising and funny TV news to help you get you through the day (or at the very least, your lunch hour.)
LISTEN: To what may be the next best thing to a Marc and Amanda spin-off, the official UGLY BETTY podcast featuring, you guessed it, Marc and Amanda. [Click here to listen]
PLAY: Reporter, in this really cool interactive trailer for NBC’s exciting new series KINGS. [Click to play]
LEARN: That the CW cares very little about the fate of REAPER as evidence by its questionable decision to launch its second season (which attracted a disappointing 2.3 million viewers) up against FOX’s unstoppable reality TV Juggernaut AMERICAN IDOL (which by comparison garnered 24.3 million viewers.) NBC Puts Jimmy Fallon Under the Microscope
Dear Jimmy Fallon,
The honeymoon is over.
A mere two days into your LATE NIGHT adventure, your corporate overlords at NBC/Universal have already taken it upon themselves to send out a teensy little survey (via email) to select members of the viewing public asking some very in-depth questions about everything Jimmy.
And as luck would have it, your friendly neighborhood TV Addict just so happened to be among the lucky few to receive said survey.
Now don’t panic, we went easy on you. Even though we’re not gonna lie, we are kind of disappointed you (a) are not following us on twitter or (b) invited us to see the show.
Chalking up your opening night stiffness to the sheer terror you must have felt knowing that Monday’s show was the most important hour of your life, when asked to check off how we would describe you, we choose “silly,” “goofy” and “funny” rather than “nervous,” “irritating” and “a bad interviewer.” We also cut you some slack when asked to quite literally dissect your show segment-by-segment, choosing “Very Entertaining” and “Somewhat Entertaining” over the far harsher “Not At All Entertaining.”
Tonight’s TV Addictions: March 3, 2009
Apparently, the big five network’s failed get the memo that sweeps moved to March. How else to explain the fact that tonight lineup features repeats of virtually all of your favorite show including: NCIS, THE MENTALIST, WITHOUT A TRACE, SCRUBS, and 90210.
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The final 12 semi-finalists underperform.
NEW & NOTABLE:
REAPER (8PM CW)
REAPER was easily one of the most promising new shows of last season — too bad it teetered out halfway through. The strike didn’t help. Season 2 doesn’t disrupt the drollness: Sam (Bret Harrison), now officially the Devil’s son, is back to sending souls back to hell, this week with a cattle prod. Ray Wise’s performance as a giddy Lucifer is still great, but what REAPER desperately needs is to embrace a serialized element beyond the habitual bagging and tagging. — Aleks Chan
Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 17, 2009
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The first 12 perform. Is it just me, or is this cycle already feeling long?
NEW & NOTABLE:
NCIS (8PM CBS, Global in Canada)
It’s like Freaky Friday when a case from Tony’s past has him and Gibbs changing roles. Okay, it’s probably not at all like the great Jodie Foster flick (do not get me started on the Lindsay Lohan remake!), but wouldn’t it be cool if it was?
BIGGEST LOSER: COUPLES (8PM NBC, E! in Canada)
Weight loss is an uphill battle. Tonight, that is literally true as the contestants climb a hill to find keys to the gym. Tell you what… if I climbed a hill and was rewarded with a workout, I’d be annoyed.
SCRUBS (8PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Remember a few weeks back when I speculated that ABC was burning through their episodes way too quickly? Well, guess what… two episodes tonight, both repeats.
THE MENTALIST (9PM CBS)
A country-club member is poisoned. Now if this weren’t a show that revolves around murders, I’d totally suspect it was bad cream cheese, but that’s probably not true in this case.
Tonight’s TV Addictions: Friday January 30, 2009
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (9PM NBC, GlobalTV in Canada)
One of the things we’ve always loved about this show is the sense one gets that these are, for the most part, real people in the real world. Tonight’s a great example, as Smash worries how his mom is going to pay for college. Maybe they should hang out with Billy and Tim, who are cooking up a money-making scheme. For that matter, maybe weshould hook up with them. A little extra cash never hurt anyone… right, Mr. Madoff?
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (10PM Sci Fi, Space in Canada)
Or as we’re calling tonight’s installment, Valkyrie in Space [Click here for spoilers]
NEW & NOTABLE:
WIFE SWAP (8PM ABC)
A fast food-lovin’ mom switches places with a woman who is big on healthy living. Can’t we all just get along?
HOWIE DO IT (8PM NBC, Global in Canada)
A woman invites her loved ones to watch as she marries a stranger on a television show. Wait, are they trying to repackage WHO WANTS TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE? You can’t fool us!
Tonight’s TV Addictions: January 27, 2009
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SCRUBS (9PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights! It’s time to meet the Muppets on The Muppet Show SCRUBS tonight!
FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Just in time for us to get over last week’s gruesome giant slugs, tonight’s installment features a killer who turns his victims’ brains into liquid. Yum.
NEW & NOTABLE:
TRUE LIES (7PM TNT)
Can’t wait until the DOLLHOUSE’s February 13th premiere for your Eliza Dushku fix? Check out her big break in one of our all-time favorite James Cameron flicks.
HOMELAND SECURITY USA (8PM ABC)
A woman goes to major extremes in order to try and look like the picture on her fake ID, and a U.S. citizen is denied entry to Canada. And heck, they’ll let anybody in!
Tonight’s TV Addictions: January 20, 2009
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The auditions move to San Francisco. Different city, same Simon.
90210 (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Much to the surprise of Sharpay and Ryan Annie and Ethan, Troy Ty auditions for the new school play. And much to our surprise, this is what it’s come to… plot lines “inspired” by HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL. Awkward.
FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Murder, a formal review of the Fringe Division and a visit from her sister keep Olivia busy this week. More importantly, the show will no-doubt get a major ratings boost thanks to this post-IDOL slot.
PRIVILEGED (9PM CW, CityTV in Canada)
When did Pete Wentz become the CW’s bitch? First, there was that whole “Pete and Peyton” thing on ONE TREE HILL, now a photo of Pete with Rose stirs up all kinds of trouble between the beauty and her boyfriend. I guess a (Fallout) boy’s gotta do what a (Fallout) boy’s gotta do to sell records these days.
