The Seven Deadly Flaws of the Modern Day Television Biz
When looking at television today it is easy to see that it has become a relic of an outdated generation. Television is still catering towards the same business model of our grandparent’s generation from over 50 years ago. It still thinks that those that have the power of the remote have control over ratings. But really it is anyone who has internet access that is controlling what content succeeds and which content fails. Consumers are not locked into watching television live anymore. They can watch at their leisure either through DVRs or by choosing to watch shows through on-demand or as television shows are available online.
So it makes us wonder in what other areas television is failing to keep up with the modern world we live in today. Technological advances aside, there are a number of key factors, which include: [Read more…]

Writer Gary Goldstein Previews Hallmark Movie Channel’s Romantic Comedy THE CABIN
Every once in a while a delightful made-for-television movie captures our imagination and offers a fun “movie night” treat. One such film is the upcoming film THE CABIN, written by Gary Goldstein, which makes its debut on the Hallmark Movie Channel on Saturday, July 30th. Offering an inside perspective, Gary Goldstein shared what it was like to bring this magical family film to life.
Why don’t you tell the story of how you came to write THE CABIN?
GARY: The way that it started was I had written a couple films for Hallmark [Channel] already and they came to me with an outline that was written by another writer and they liked the seed of the idea for it, particularly as they already had plans to do three movies back-to-back in Ireland. The basic concept was this family-vacation comedy which introduced two estranged families in such a way as to get to know each other by having them accidentally forced to share vacation quarters, or a cabin if you will — and [Hallmark] thought that Ireland would be a good place for this film. So what I did is I took the basic one-liner and expanded it into this new story about these two families that don’t know each other but that meet and end up being forced to share this cabin and of course what happens is the single parents will slowly fall for each other. I also decided that the kids would have their own stories and relationships and that kind of thing. But what I was looking for was to sort of put a bit of a higher concept on it, so I thought it might be interesting that, while it would be shot in Ireland, to actually set it in Scotland. Because every year in Scotland they do the Highland Games for people of Scottish descent where they participate in these very ancient games, some of which may or may not be popular today. So I set it at a Scottish resort in the midst of fictional Highland-type games. So I came up with the Meeting of the Macs, which is for everybody whose last name begins with M-A-C and it turns out that both the families in the film have the same name: MacDougal. So that is how they end up getting put in the same cabin; it was a simple reservation booking error. Then it goes from there. I also chose Scotland because Ireland can pass as Scotland. It was kind of an easy fix as we could use actors who could put on Scottish accents, while the two leads are American and the rest of the main cast could also be American. Then we just went on from there. [Read more…]
Tackling the World of NECESSARY ROUGHNESS with Marc Blucas, Scott Cohen and EP Craig Shapiro
When art imitates life, it is often more truthful than reality itself. In USA Network’s new series NECESSARY ROUGHNESS, in a twist of fate, a psychotherapist finds her personal life derailed just as her professional life takes off.
Based on a true story, the show manages to find the truth and trueness of some extraordinary stories (albeit fictionally depicted), but which echo the real world and everything seen in the news. Celebrities, sports figures, politicians and Wall Street wizards all have one thing in common – a breaking point. In NECESSARY ROUGHNESS, it is Dr. Dani Santino’s job to bring back these high-powered individuals from their breaking points. She spotlights or highlights the stress-fractures in their professional/personal lives and teaches them to manage that stress. Therapy is not always the most octane-fueled subject matter, but when looking at the lives of a professional football star, a high-stakes gambler, a radio or television personality, a CEO or even a race car driver, suddenly the inside-look at their lives and how they cope is just a bit more fascinating. After all, who wouldn’t want to be able to know what they are talking about behind closed doors?
NECESSARY ROUGHNESS introduces us to Dr. Dani Santino, brilliantly and deftly portrayed by Callie Thorne, who helps such talented and privileged individuals. But like a mirror does not just one side, each of these glittering stars and celebrities has a side that hides their fears and insecurities – all which combusts or manifests in negative ways threatening their successful professional lives. And like her clients, Dani is not just a great therapist, helping those who do not even know they need help, she too needs a bit of help as her personal life disintegrates. With a divorce, nasty allegations, rebellious teenage children and a mother with a propensity for eavesdropping, Dani must find a balance in her own life. With humor, resilience and some surprising allies, Dani learns to navigate a world of high-stakes and even tougher personalities. It will intrigue you and delight you as you discover the world of NECESSARY ROUGHNESS.
Taking a few moments to talk about the show and what is all about are executive producer Craig Shapiro, along with stars Marc Blucas, Scott Cohen, Hannah Marks and Patrick Johnson (To read more from Callie Thorne about her role as Dr. Dani, visit this article.)
