We Shine the Spotlight on THE THUNDERMANS Star Addison Riecke
I spoke with the adorable and extremely talented star of THE THUNDERMANS, Addison Riecke. I spoke with Riecke about her audition for the role of Nora, her plans for the future, and her wonderful work with numerous charities.
You’re so young and you star on a hit Nickelodeon show. How do you balance everything going on right now?
Addison Riecke: It’s a lot of fun and I love going back to Louisiana and coming back here. (California) We spend a lot of time on set and on the weekends we like to go to the beach because it’s such nice weather. It’s a lot of fun and it’s not that challenging to manage.
Do you think acting is something you’ll want to pursue when you’re older?
I think acting is definitely something I want to do when I’m older. I just started out and am very new to the business; I’m very lucky and blessed that I got a TV show. In the future I would love to work on a feature film maybe. I would definitely want to continue my acting career and see what I could do later in my life.
Your character has some awesome super powers. If you could have super powers in real life which powers would you want?
I think it would be teleportation or shape shifting. Teleportation because you could be anywhere in a second and you wouldn’t have to deal with traffic and all of that kind of stuff, you could just be there in the blink of an eye. Shape shifting would be a lot of fun too because you could be a lot of objects or animals.
Do you have a favorite scene or line from this season?
My favorite line that I’ve done in the whole show is in the first episode where I say, “dance, dance I say.” Because the first time I read the script I thought that was so funny and I loved it and I thought my character was going to be awesome.
How was your audition?
I auditioned for the role in September or 2012. I had been on a few TV show auditions and I thought to myself I’m probably not going to get this, but it’s going to be a lot of fun auditioning. It went on and on and we went to the producer’s callback and the network testing. And I was like this is going really well I didn’t think I would make it this far, and then I booked it and I was so excited.
What can you tell us about tonight’s finale?
The episode is called “Breaking Dad” Phoebe (Kira Kosarin) gets a B from her old teacher and she doesn’t want a B so our dad becomes the teacher and some crazy things happen. With Nora and our mom some squirrels get in our house and we have to deal with that, so it gets really exciting.
You do a lot of work with charities! What can you tell us about those charities?
I raised over $4,000 for the Oklahoma tornado victims last year. In January for my tenth birthday instead of having my friends bring gifts to my party we made valentines gifts and brought them to the children at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. I continue to visit the kids there; on Easter I brought the kids Easter gifts. I think it’s really important to give back, we are all really lucky and it makes me very happy to see all of these kids happy and I’m glad to help any way that I can.
Be sure to follow Addison on instagram at @addisonriecke and on twitter at @AddisonRiecke and watch the finale of THE THUNDERMANS tonight at 8:00 on Nickelodeon.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Star Danielle Brooks
Danielle Brooks plays everyone’s favorite inmate, Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson on the critically acclaimed, juggernaut of a show, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. I spoke with Brooks about her audition for the show, working with Samira, (Wiley) and what we can look forward to with Taystee this season.
How was your audition for Taystee?
Danielle Brooks: My audition for Taystee was a lot of fun and not a lot of pressure because I was in the middle of doing another show, a theater gig so it took a little bit of the pressure off. The description said to not wear any makeup and to not look glamorous. I went in there with no makeup on and my hair brushed back in cornrows and I remember changing into a mouu- muu. And I went in and I auditioned and it said the character was light hearted and wasn’t mean or malicious in anyway. When they said that to me I knew this was the character for me because that was the direction I was taking Taystee regardless of the language of it. Most people would have played it a different way; I felt this was the character for me. She sang! The scene I auditioned for was the first scene of the season with Taystee in the shower scene with Piper. (Taylor Schilling) That was exciting for me too!
The scenes between you and Samira are so incredible and come off so natural. Do you both ever improvise in your scenes together?
We don’t improvise the scenes; there is a little room for creativity. The chemistry might be so strong because we’ve known each other for about seven years now. We both attended Julliard and Samira graduated a year ahead of me. So we’ve known each other for quite some time and I feel like that’s why it’s so easy to work with her and the chemistry is just there.
Do you have a favorite scene or line that you’ve done together?
Well my favorite scene with Poussey is at the end of the season when you find them in the library and Taystee just came back to prison. I just love how honest Poussey was with Taystee and I think that scene in particular lends itself to the behavior of Taystee in season two. So I think she took to heart that conversation, and for me getting to work with Samira on a scene that was much more dramatic than the others was a lot of fun.
When Taystee left the prison we saw that she really didn’t have anyone. Will we learn more about where she came from and who her family is?
You will definitely learn more about Taystee’s back-story in season two. I think it will be fun for the audience to get to know some of the details of who she is and the details that people have been longing to know about her. I feel like peoples questions will be answered and a few will still remain a mystery.
Was there a moment during the first season or a scene or line of dialogue that you did and you just knew this show was going to be huge?
Our slogan is “every sentence has a story” and that to me is incredible to be involved in a show where every sentence has a story. To me that means every person every human being has a story, and a lot of times in Hollywood a lot of stories are over looked and are not valued to the extent of stories we’ve heard a hundred times already. I was excited to be a part of something like that, especially as someone of color. To be playing someone that I felt could very easily slip into a stereotype but was not at all a stereotype. And that was exciting for me because I got to take on that challenge of bringing someone people think they know to life and showing them the beauty of that person.
You can watch Danielle in season two of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK on Netflix.

Throwback Thursday: Why We Miss STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP
As Wes Mendel (Judd Hirsch) began to give his monologue in the first couple of minutes of the pilot I knew who wrote this episode. The second the monologue began to weigh heavy on the main things wrong with the television industry I began to fall in love. I fell in love with everything about that opening monologue; it was so raw and so real. It hooked me so intensely I didn’t think I would be able to look away. Just as the monologue finished and the title sequence began I quickly paused the show and feverishly typed into IMDb who created STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, I was not surprised even a little when I read that Aaron Sorkin created the show.
The writing was fantastic and the characters were so well thought out and the actors portraying them were so perfect for their roles. As always Matthew Perry was fantastic as Matt Albie, the aggressive and passionate head writer. He was the heart and soul of that show and deserved a lot more recognition and praise for it than he received. Also, can we talk about the powerhouse that was Sarah Paulson on that show? Yes? Okay good! Seriously, she was amazing as the devoted Christian star. Harriet and Matt had so much sexual tension. They were perfect for each other, and at the same time were the worst couple of all time. They were hilarious to watch and so mesmerizing.
Another favorite duo of mine on the show was Danny (Bradley Whitford) and Jordan (Amanda Peet). Danny and Jordan’s chemistry was unmatchable and so great to watch unfold. During the finale when he finally sees the baby and she says the baby’s last name is Tripp I just about died.
There are so many shows that have been canceled way before their time (HAPPY ENDINGS, VERONICA MARS, and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) but STUDIO 60 had so much potential. I hate that it had to end after just one season. As much as I love NBC that show truly didn’t belong on that network. That’s the main reason I think it was canceled. STUDIO 60 belonged on HBO and should have been a bit more explicit with it’s content. (Almost like a comedic/ melodramatic NEWSROOM) Another mistake the network made with that show was premiering it at the same time 30 ROCK premiered. I loved 30 ROCK and I think it was one of the best shows to ever be on television but it was almost the same premise. Both shows focused around an SNL type of show, one was more comedic based while the other was heavy on intense storylines and character drama. I think the show could’ve still been on the air today if it was on another network or at least released at a different time. It was brilliant and ahead of its time. Fingers crossed Netflix wants to bring back the cast for a second season, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT style!

We Shine the Spotlight on FAKING IT Star Katie Stevens
I spoke with Katie Stevens, one of the stars of MTV’s breakout hit, FAKING IT. Stevens plays Karma, the outgoing, soul searching, fifteen year old who is a bit confused at the moment. We talked about her favorite scene from this season, Karma’s future with Liam, (Gregg Sulkin) and Karma’s relationship with Amy. (Rita Volk)
What was your initial reaction to working with Rita? Did you both work well together from the beginning?
Katie Stevens: Rita and I met during the audition process because we both went out for Karma. Her and I spoke before auditions etc and then when we both got cast, we wanted to make sure we built a legitimate friendship. We went to dinner together, hung out at each other’s houses, learned about one another’s family and personal life. Now when we are in a scene we see facial expressions that one another will do in scenes and we’re like “Wow you do that in real life too!” We are great friends now.
The shows main focus above everything is the friendship between Karma and Amy. Who are some of your all time favorite TV friends?
Monica and Rachel from FRIENDS. Hands down!
What has been your favorite scene to shoot this season?
The final Karma and Amy scene in the finale has so much passion and heart, it’s the final breakthrough and required both of us to be raw and emotional, and as actresses it was a challenge. But we both loved it!
Your fans are very vocal about the show! Is it overwhelming at times? Do you feel a big responsibility being on a show that is impacting teens in a positive way?
Sometimes it’s overwhelming because as viewers I think sometimes fans think that we actually are our characters and they get angry and I’m like “wait no! I’m Katie! I just play Karma!” But we have been really lucky to have such passionate fans, they love the show and are invested in our characters and their stories, and that is exactly what matters to us. It’s amazing to say that I have fans and people that care so much about this story we’re telling.
It’s clear that Amy’s feelings for Karma aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Do you think she will be able to accept it if Karma wants to date Liam?
I think it would cause a rift in their relationship. But Karma’s relationship with Amy is more important to her than her relationship with Liam.
Do you think Liam is good for Karma? Do you think they could actually work?
Karma is 15 and has a lot of things to figure out and discover about herself. I think Liam is a phase in that. Every 15-year-old girl pines after someone. I know when I was 15 I had nothing figured out and wanted to pine after the cute boy and have my best friend there to talk about it with. I think the whole situation with Karma and Liam is all part of Karma growing up and learning the consequences of her actions.
If/ when Amy tells Karma about her feelings for her how do you think Amy will handle it? What would that mean for their status at school?
I don’t think either of them would care about their status at school at that point. When those feelings come up it is a much deeper thing than any high school status. It’s a major event in their friendship, and ultimately they will have to work through it together.
The show just got picked up! What would you like to see happen next season on the show? What do you want for Karma?
I want to see Karma grow up a little. I think she made some poor choices this season not really thinking about the consequences and finally at the end of the first season she loses people and “karma” kind of bites her in the ass. But I think that needed to happen in order for her to grow, so I’m excited to see what will happen next in this story!

We Shine the Spotlight on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Star Matt McGorry
Matt McGorry stars on what I believe to be the greatest show currently on television (and it’s not even technically on TV) ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. McGorry plays the lovable but strict guard, John Bennett. I spoke with McGorry about season two, what we can expect with John and Daya and about one of the new characters this season, Vee.
What can we look forward to with Daya (Dascha Polanco) and John this season?
Matt McGorry: Lots of drama, and I don’t mean that in the way of dark heavy drama. There’s relationship drama, which creates a lot of humor and increased tensions for sure. I think pregnancies are not a particularly easy time, I think throwing in the factors of being in prison and having to keep it a secret that’s certainly not going to make it any easier. I think we will see the pot is very close to boiling and we will see it boil over a few times.
John’s job is in jeopardy because of this pregnancy. What will happen with his job during all of this?
It’s sort of a fine line with trying to keep things under wraps without letting people know. The tricky thing is some people already know as we’ve seen in season one. It’s not just John and Daya, it’s Aleida (Elizabeth Rodriguez) Daya’s mother. And when someone has a big mouth its hard to keep these things under wraps. If you’ve seen the trailer you’ve seen Bennett a little angrier than we’ve seen him before, and some of that is definitely in relation to the pressure of trying to keep it all a secret.
When Daya does have the baby we know she can’t raise it in prison. Do you think John could raise it on his own?
I think John might have some struggles raising a child on his own. I think he’s used to his certain way of living in many ways I think he’s immature and has some growing up to do. But I have heard becoming a parent makes you grow up pretty quickly so maybe things will work out for him. I think it’s hard to be a single parent, particularly when your parent is working all of the time. It would be an interesting situation if it happened.
What can you tell us about Vee (Lorraine Toussaint)?
Vee is a badass! I’m scared of Vee, she’s the counterpoint to Red (Kate Mulgrew) she’s really smart and I’d say she’s more okay to fight dirty than Red is, which sometime could give you the upper hand. She’s gonna be the one to bite and I think that rivalry is going to play out and be really exciting for viewers. Even in season one we saw that Red was the queen of the prison and that no one could touch her in terms of the other inmates, but now we see someone that poses a real threat to her. Things are dark and things get serious really quickly.
Are there any characters that you would love to see more of this season?
I love Lorna and I love Yael (Stone) who plays Lorna as well. But I think there’s a lot going on there and we will have a lot of questions answered.
What would you like to say about this season?
I think it goes more into the things that we loved about the first season. In some ways it’s darker and in some ways it’s more comedic. Frankly for my character I’m not sure if people are going to like Bennett as much as they have in the first season, which is sort of an interesting place for me to be as an actor. It’s also been very fun to play a different side to the character I think people know him as the sweet guy, I don’t think he’s the worst guy ever but it’s definitely a different flavor from what they’re used to.
Is there anything you would love to see in season 3?
Selfishly I’d love to see Bennett’s back-story and the back-stories of more of the guards as well. But I’m just very excited to watch season two, I’m such a huge fan of the show.
Matt will also be on one of ABC’s new fall pilots HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. I asked him about the show and about his character, Asher.
It’s a suspense driven legal thriller. Viola Davis plays Annalise Keating who is a law professor who has an unorthodox style; she has five key law students. Asher Millstone is one of them. Rather than just being an academic teacher she teaches them how to think on the fly, how to get involved with her cases where she is the actual lawyer. Asher Millstone in some ways is the opposite of Bennett, he’s sort of that guy that you love to hate but hate to love. I think we all have at least one friend in our circle that’s a little bit of an asshole or that’s a little bit of a bitch. I think we love them because we know things about them and they are generally insecure even if it’s not visible. But sometimes they are also a lot of fun to be around and usually they are the ones to say the things that no one else will say and it’s incredibly entertaining. That’s a lot of who he is, other than that he comes from old money and he is a privileged guy. It was very cool and very different to play something so aside from Bennett who is a working class, veteran, super nice guy to playa a rich, spoiled douche bag.
You can watch Matt in the second season of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK on Netflix and can follow him on twitter @MattMcGorry

We Shine the Spotlight on FAKING IT Star Rita Volk
In April MTV premiered FAKING IT, a controversial new teen drama about two friends pretending to be lesbians in front of their whole school. No one really knew how the show would be received. Whether it would attract teen viewers of different genders and sexual orientations or if the show would come off as offensive and inappropriate. Turns out millions love the show, are fully supporting it, and are exceedingly protective over it. Due to the large fan base MTV announced yesterday that they would air a second season of the teen dramedy. I spoke with Rita Volk, one of the stars of the show about her character Amy, her characters feelings for Karma, (Katie Stevens) and the awesome dance number in the finale.
From the beginning we saw that this show wasn’t just another teen drama. Its very deep and the relationship between these two friends is something very different than what we’ve seen on TV in the past. What drew you to this show and the script?
Rita Volk: For exactly that reason actually, when I heard about it I thought it was a very fresh concept. I couldn’t really think of anything else out there for that demographic specifically. I mean there have obviously been numerous gay and lesbian characters on shows before but it was never a central part of the story. I felt those characters were always guest stars, co-stars, they were kind of always the second rate characters. So to have this story revolve around a lesbian character and for teens, I couldn’t really think of anything like that. That was a big thing; I thought it was a really great concept that had never been done before.
Did you Approach the role differently because it is a touchy subject with some people?
Yes, I think we all did. I think at the end of the day if it’s heartfelt and it’s genuine and coming from a good place people are going to see that. Obviously we got some slack in the begging when people heard about the concept they thought it was insensitive or taking advantage of this touchy, vulnerable, and very personal issue and using it for a TV show. I think once people saw the Pilot and obviously up to this point now see it’s something totally different. We acknowledge that we have a lot of fans out there that are, we’ve gotten fan letters and a lot of really positive feedback from people saying “I’m so glad this show is out there because I found out that I was a lesbian or that I was gay because I had a crush on my best friend.” Others have said that this show has helped them get through it or that this show is a happy place for them. Hearing stuff like that you realize that you’re catering to a very specific group of people and you don’t want to come off as offensive or not genuine in any way. It was difficult in the beginning; you realize you have a fan base and that people are actually watching the show and you forget that when you’re confined to a set. Now it’s a little bit easier, I feel like people know now that it’s not offensive, I think it’s a very relatable story. Its not as scary anymore in terms of that responsibility but yeah we were all a little bit nervous at first because we wanted to make sure that people saw it was coming from a good place.
What are some of your favorite TV friendships?
FRIENDS I think is the biggest and greatest show ever. Currently I love Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) from THE BIG BANG THEORY, I love that show and I think that’s a cute friendship which started off as not a friendship at all, they hated each other and now they are the best of friends. I’m kind of old school; I’m a big BUFFY fan so I of course loved the Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan) friendship. We kind of cross over with some of those fans too which is really neat!
Your fans are very vocal on twitter and social media. Do you think that plays a big role in the success of the show?
Oh Absolutely! I didn’t have social media before; I got a twitter account for the show. I wanted to be a part of it I knew that it was important and a way to reach out to people and get that feedback. It’s a big part of it now because you get to see that instant feedback of how the show is being taken in and it’s been crazy. We’ve gotten fan art, blogs, apparently fan fiction that I have yet to read. But absolutely I think it’s a huge, huge factor in how the show’s been doing. I don’t think we would have known how big it’s gotten if it weren’t for social media and that online presence.
We saw a couple weeks ago that Amy tried dating and wasn’t really feeling it. Then we saw her with Oliver and it really wasn’t for her. It seems like the only person she is attracted to is Karma. Do you think that will change?
I think so. I think we can all relate to having unreciprocated feelings for somebody else. I think that it’s definitely going to be a journey for her and just like in real life, you fall in love with someone or you develop really strong feelings for someone and it takes you a really, really long time to get over them. I want to say I hope she does, I know the fans are going to hate me but if Karmy god forbid doesn’t work out, I would want that for Amy. But I don’t know, if it does happen it’s going to take a really long time for her to get their because these feelings are so intense and they are so new. They really are like you said only oriented towards Karma so I really think it is going to be a journey for her.
We saw a dance number in the promos. How was shooting that?
It was so much fun! It was one of my favorite scenes to shoot because it really sets up this tone of this amazing friendship these two girls have. How many people have a coordinated dance number together? These two girls have been practicing it since they were little and they’ve been dying to use it so it was a really cute scene. It was a lot of fun because it was very genuine, we had everybody around us and everyone was watching. All of the extras and the guest stars they hadn’t seen it before so it really was like we were performing it for the first time in front of everyone.
The finale leaked recently. For those who haven’t seen it or read the spoilers what’s in store for Karma and Amy’s relationship?
Things are going to get tested. Without saying too much, unfortunately there is stuff that is already out there. Every characters journey up to that point starts to unravel, everyone winds up realizing the repercussions of their actions. Especially for Karma, and for Amy that’s when she gets really fed up with everything. The eighth episode is really the last straw for her and everything kind of hits the fan for everybody.
If the show gets renewed what would you like to see happen next season? What would you like to see happen to Amy? (It was announced yesterday morning there will be a second season!)
I would like her to be happier because she’s gotten such a short end of the stick throughout the first season. I want her to have a better sense of who she is and to discover that these feelings are okay. If she happens to meet somebody else than so be it, but the one thing I do want to say is Amy is not straight and that’s something Carter (Covington) talked about because a lot of fans were like “Is this going to be like other shows where this character teases us and she finds out she’s not gay is like just kidding I was just experimenting.” It’s not going to be like that, and that was very important for me because I know that Amy is really a vessel for a lot of these fans because of the fact that she is a lesbian character that’s why we have this amazing fandom around her. So I will say that if she does meet someone I want it to be a girl and I want her to not be tortured by secrets like she was in the first season.
