Today’s TV Addict Top 5: We Examine Fall TV’s Biggest Surprises
Procedural of Interest
Having spent the better part of our TV blogging “career” railing against CBS’ inexplicably popular brand of cookie-cutter procedurals, we were as surprised as anyone to discover that our favorite new show of the fall — PERSON OF INTEREST — is just that! In fact, thanks to the budding bromance between Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Fitch (Michael Emerson), the ever-expanding cast of morally dubious supporting players (Enrico Colantoni FTW!) and the addictive allure that comes with creator Jonah Nolan’s storytelling prowess, we can’t recall the last time we were this excited to find out what happens next.
Star Wattage
If one had asked us at the start of the television season to pick our “guaranteed locks” for favorite Fall show, there is no question in our mind that we would have bet the farm on the likes of 2 BROKE GIRLS, NEW GIRL and UP ALL NIGHT based solely on the like-ability factor of stars Kat Dennings, Zooey Deschanel and Christina Applegate. Unfortunately, now almost mid-way through the television season the only prediction we care to make with regards to UP ALL NIGHT and to a lesser extent NEW GIRL is that they are both perilously close to being dumped off our weekly sked alongside the already forgotten 2 BROKE GIRLS . Suffice it to say, likeable leading ladies with an off-the-charts “Q Score” can only do so much where weak writing is concerned. [Read more…]
What Is This Sudden Obsession With Historical Accuracy on Television?
Everywhere you look there seems to be an obsession with historical accuracy. Fans, viewers, and TV critics alike are jumping on the bandwagon chastising TV shows for their inaccuracy. Frankly, this is astounding. Since when has television ever been about historical accuracy? The purpose of television is first and foremost to entertain. It is not concerned about accuracy because of one simple truth: it doesn’t need to be.
We don’t watch medical dramas and legal shows because they accurately depict what happens in an emergency room or a court room. We certainly do not watch romantic comedies because they accurately reflect how people interact on a date. And we do not watch period-piece dramas because they accurately reflect what really happened in that era.
Yet more and more online commentary and viewer critiques claim they seek “historical accuracy.” I say that is absurd. Television shows are stories seen through the lens of a writer, director, producer and all those who bring the show to life. They will throw in nods to the time period they are looking to reflect – sometimes that is clothing, hairstyles, landscape, settings, and other accouterments. But frequently creative license is employed in order to keep the story tightly focused on the characters introduced. Television is about characters. Shows live and die on whether the characters (and the actors who portray them) resonate with the audience. We rarely notice or even care that the character is wearing clothing that is 10-20 years too early for the time period, or if the hair styles are too modern – or better yet, that the characters look a lot cleaner than they would have been in that era. The Intangibles Killing Television
In today’s television climate, it is nearly impossible to predict what kind of show will be a hit and which will just miss the mark and fade into oblivion. Shows with sterling pedigrees, all-star casts, brilliant writing and some with double the money of other shows are still unable to reach their audience. Lots of fingers are pointed when shows that are supposed to be “guaranteed” successes don’t succeed. But even with all the right ingredients, there are certain intangibles that networks and studios are refusing to recognize as significant contributors to why shows today are not making it.
In an effort to illuminate the intangibles having such negative effects on television shows, I have identified a dozen categories that need to be considered. [Read more…]
