Nia’s developing powers finds her confiding in Kara in the next episode of SUPERGIRL. And after she makes a confession that she can “dream the future”, Kara and Brainy will team up to help National City’s newest superhero come into her own. During a recent visit to the set of SUPERGIRL in Vancouver, the cast teased this new superfriends tro.
- New Trio. “There’s a really fun trio friendship forming, a new super friends type thing with Nia Nal and Brainy and Kara. Really fun antics they get up to,” Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers) teased. “Brainy is with Kara and Nia trying to shape Nia’s kind of coming to terms with her powers. He really helps Kara and really helps Nia with that dynamic,” Nicole Maines (Nia Nal) said. Jesse Rath (Brainy) went on to explain “without giving too much away, the other characters start to become aware of Nia’s dreaming and maybe she might have some sort of super power connecting to her dreaming. Other characters are brought into the loop and, for that reason, we need her help to figure out certain things. So we go out together, the three of us — Brainy, Nia and Kara — it becomes an issue of who knows whose identity at that point still, and so that’s a funny thing we play with as well during those scenes.”
- Excited to Become a Superhero. “I’m trying to conduct myself on set in a professional manner. And kind of be like ‘pfft, I’m not completely obsessed with the super suit’. But it’s all I think about. Every morning I wake up [and I think] ‘I get a super suit’. I’m going to sleep [and I think] ‘I’m getting a super suit’. So I’m really really excited. It’s going to be gorgeous! I have the best super suit,” Maines teased.
- Adjusting to a New Identity. Nia isn’t going to be giving up her job or her identity as she tries to adjust to her new life as a superhero. According to Maines, “a lot of her scenes are at Catco and they continue to be. She’s not going… When she becomes Dreamer I don’t think she’s going to stop being Nia the reporter. And especially since Kara’s at Catco. I think we’re going to see, I think a big part of that relationship is going to be Kara and Nia at work, and then Kara and Nia at their other work. And I really hope that we get to carpool. I think that would be great. Carpool karaoke, alright, let’s carpool to Catco, let’s carpool to stop crime.”
- Budding Romance. Nia’s potential romance with Brainy will be developing alongside this story of Nia developing her powers. But Maines jokingly said that Brainy will continue to remain clueless as to how to flirt (which also comes through in the preview below): “[Every time we film a flirting scene,] I’m going home feeling like I did absolutely terrible,” Maines laughed. “Because I feel like talking to a wall was easier than trying to flirt with Brainy. Because it feels like Brainy’s fighting back. Brainy is like pushing back — pushing against you — and you’re, like, ‘I have exactly nothing to work with’.” Meanwhile, Rath teased that “There will be more Brainy/Nia scenes to come. The scene and the situation is more intimate, but it’s still just as awkward as ever.”
