“Father?” said the Son of Satan as SUPERNATURAL begins its thirteenth season. But Sam, who made his way to Kelly’s room in the final moments of the season 12 finale, wasn’t Jack’s father and he tried to calm down the newly-born, but fully grown, boy. Enter Dean, who rushed inside the house calling out for his brother. And when he took a shot at Jack (he of the glowing eyes), Lucifer’s son managed to suspend the brothers in mid-air via some sort of sonic force-field.
Hours later, the boys woke up on the floor to find that Jack had disappeared. Actually, Jack went in search of his father and ended up naked at a local fast food restaurant until he got picked up by a local cop. Seriously, the kid is very weird.
Meanwhile, Sam and Dean were on the case, immediately leaving the lakeside cabin upon waking to hunt Jack down. Back at the cabin, two angels came across Castiel’s body, which had been brought inside the cabin and covered with a sheet. Predictably, they were also on the hunt for Jack, although they took a moment to lament Cas’ death.
The officer brought Jack to the police station and dressed him in clothes from the lost and found, but he couldn’t answer the most basic of personal questions beyond telling her that his name was Jack. He did, however, seem to have quite the understanding of his mother’s fate, despite having just been born.
As Sam got a lead on where Jack had been, he contacted the local police and learned about Jack’s whereabouts, which found the boys heading over. But things were about to get weird at the station. With the lights flickering on and off, the officer tracked down Jack and he showed her a demonstration of his powers, thanks to a helpful nearby vending machine. But things turned dangerous quickly as Jack started hearing a terrible sound and then hurt the officer while trying to get away from it.
What he was hearing, of course, was “angel radio”. And that’s when the Winchesters showed up. Fortunately, Sam came equipped with a taser and immediately knocked Jack out. As Sam locked Jack away temporarily, Dean came clean with the cop and announced that they kill monsters. She was appropriately skeptic, but quickly accepted his version of events.
In the cell nearby, Sam asked Jack how he had aged so rapidly. Apparently Jack was infused with Kelly’s essence, in a way, and this allowed him to grow rapidly and learn to speak quickly. Sam got down to business, questioning Jack about the door he had opened to another dimension. While Jack remembered doing it, he insisted he just wanted to find his father. But the man he called his father wasn’t Lucifer, it was Cas – the being he and Kelly had chosen to protect him. Sam had to deliver the unfortunate news that Cas was dead. And while the angels gathered outside the station, Sam quietly told Dean that Jack was just a kid and they had to help him.
In the lobby, Dean and the officer faced off against one of the angels, who was holding the officer’s son hostage. In the cell, the other two angels soon faced off against Jack and Sam. Fortunately, Sam managed to banish them before they ran away with Jack. And outside, one of the angels told Dean that Jack could do “almost anything”. Soon after, as the one remaining angel stabbed Jack with an angel blade, Sam killed her.
But Jack didn’t die. He simply pulled the blade from his chest and recovered quickly. Later, as the boys picked up the pieces outside the station, the brothers decided to bring Jack back to the bunker with them. Sam wanted to help him, but Dean just wanted to keep an eye on him because he didn’t trust him.
Back at the cabin Sam tried to talk Dean out of burning Cas in case they could find a way to bring him back. But Dean had already tried praying to Chuck to fix everything for them, telling him that he needed to bring back Mary, Cas and even Crowley. But Chuck wasn’t in the mood to grant Dean’s prayer and it went unanswered, prompting him to smash his fist into the side of the building.
So Dean built a pyre as Jack said his goodbyes to Kelly. Later, at dusk, Dean said goodbye to Cas, Crowley and Kelly as they prepared to burn the bodies they had left. And he told Sam he was convinced Mary had been killed by Lucifer the moment they went through the portal.
But Mary hadn’t been killed right away. As we flashed over to the alternate dimension (let’s call it Earth-2 for simplicity’s sake), Lucifer started beating on Mary. But he didn’t want to kill her, admitting “maybe I need you”. Looks like this unlikely duo might team up to find their way home.
