Season 7 of NCIS: LOS ANGELES may have been the best yet. It was a year of romance (Kensi and Deeks are talking marriage); a year of disappointment (Sam thought he lost Jada back to Tahir), but mostly, it was a year of family (the Densi Moms provided humor, pathos and insight into why their respective children are the way they are.)
Arkady (guest star Vyto Ruginis), Anna (guest star Bar Paly) and even Granger’s biological daughter, Jennifer Kim (guest star Malese Jow), became entwined as part of the NCIS: LOS ANGELES family. Sam’s family (less seen than heard because wife, Michelle’s portrayer, Aunjanue Ellis, is on QUANTICO), was no less present in the show, referred to frequently and integrated into the plot, even without Ellis.
Then, there was the ultimate payoff… not only did Callen learn his name was Grisha, but he also had a chance to meet his father (with a welcomed guest shot by Daniel J. Travanti).
If there was anything that Season 7 hit right on the mark, it was the importance of family, whether biological or “assembled.”
Tonight’s season finale, “Talion,” brings home that, at a particular point when family is concerned, there is no agency, obstacle, heaven or earth that the other family members will not move to rescue one of their own.
When Sam (LL COOL J) receives a distress code from son Aiden’s (guest star Tye White) that his school has been taken over by an extremist group, Sam, Callen (Chris O’Donnell), Kensi (Daniela Ruah), and Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) rush to San Francisco to protect Aiden and free the hostages.
Chief suspect in the takeover… odds are on Jada’s brother/warlord Tahir Khaled (guest star Anslem Richardson). Whether he blames Sam for opening up Jada’s (guest star Ella Thomas) eyes to a different world, or because he believes that Sam betrayed his trust and honor could be two reasons for the attack on Aiden’s school. (The third being that Tahir is basically a power-hungry murderer.)
Regardless of the reasons, the NCIS: LOS ANGELES “family” bans together to break the rules and rescue Sam’s son. Granger (Miguel Ferrer) and Hetty (Linda Hunt) ignore protocol while Eric (Barrett Foa) and Nell (Renée Felice Smith) eke every last byte out of ops to back the team.
Nobody, but nobody, is going to hurt one of their family and get through the affront, unscathed.
