Mark Deklin stars on the addicting Lifetime series, DEVIOUS MAIDS. Deklin plays Nicholas Deering, Marisol’s new fiance with a huge mysterious back story. We spoke about his characters relationship with Marisol and his maid, Opal. Whether we can expect a wedding this season, and what we will see on tonight’s season premiere.
How was your audition for Nicholas? What drew you to the show?
Mark Deklin: My audition was an exceptionally pleasant one. I already knew Marc Cherry, Eva Longoria, and Scott Genkinger from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, and I was introduced to (executive producer) David Warren, with whom I share many mutual friends and who has since become a good pal. I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the character and was hoping for a call back, which I subsequently got. And then my screen test was all of the same group plus (Executive Producer) Sabrina Wind, who is a doll; it ended up feeling more like a rehearsal than a screen test. Before I knew it I was in Atlanta shooting. And grateful to be there.
For those who are new to the show how would you describe the show, and your character, Nicholas?
I like to describe the show as a tongue-in-cheek soap opera. There are moments of high drama, but there are also moments of sly humor and self-aware winks to the audience. It’s a fun mix. Nicholas is an interesting cat. Neither a clear-cut good guy nor a clear-cut bad guy…just a complicated guy. In terms of his past, he’s definitely a bad guy; but in terms of his love for Marisol and the future he hopes to build with her, his intentions are very, very good. But he’s got some dark shit from his past to negotiate. If he can negotiate it properly, Marisol will be his one shot at redemption. Nick is walking a dangerous tightrope — and an actor, I’m always drawn to characters with secrets, layers, danger and complications.
Will more about Nicholas’s previous marriage to Dahlia be revealed this season?
Absolutely! I don’t want to give anything away, but I can tell you that we’ll be using the device of the flashback to reveal bits and pieces of that ill-fated marriage and its tragic end…and each new flashback will be another skin peeled back from the onion that is Nicholas Deering. And just when you think you’ve got things figured out, Marc and the other writers will throw a new twist at you. I just can’t tell you what those twists are…you’ll have to tune in for that.
Do you think things will go smoothly for Marisol and Nicholas? Will we maybe get to see a wedding this season?
Smoothly? No. Absolutely not. But I do think there’s hope for them. Personally, I’m rooting for Nick and Marisol, if only because I love working with Ana Ortiz so much. As I mentioned earlier, Marisol is Nick’s one shot at redemption. Will he play his cards right? Or will he lose her (and everything)? We’ll see. But I certainly think a wedding is one possible outcome. Then again, there are many possible outcomes.
There is a lot of speculation about Opal and Nicholas. What can you tell us about their history and what they might be hiding?
As I’ve mentioned, Nick has some pretty big sins to answer for, and he and Opal (his longtime maid) have so much dirt on each other they’re chest-deep in it. For the past 15 years, they’ve been living in a sort of frozen stalemate, a Cold War detente, a balance of power with an uneasy truce…but then one day Nick meets Marisol in a bookstore and suddenly shakes off his emotional stupor. He’s fallen deeply, madly in love, and he has a new lease on life — all of which is lovely, but a threat to the delicate balance that he and Opal have established over the past decade and a half. And Opal is not about to just roll over and show her belly.
Season 2 Premieres tonight! What can you tell us about tonight’s episode?
In terms of my character, this first episode has a lot of set-up. We’ll get to know Nick better as the season progresses — but I will say that the episode opens with a bang, and fans of the show will not be disappointed. Every character delivers, and I’m really honored and delighted to be a part of this terrific cast.
