The minute you enter the world of THE FINDER, you recognize right away that the world you know has shifted slightly. Things are a little different in the series that sprung from Fox’s other hit series BONES. For one, it feels so much more relaxed. But that is the illusion that they want you to have. For lurking beneath the surface is a murky world where the characters finds themselves in the most unusual of cases.
THE FINDER is not all about death and homicide. Their mission is to simply find the impossible. Things lost over time. An elusive place tucked away in a memory that you want to revisit. Or perhaps a person who has slipped off the grid. Beautifully back-dropped by the lush flora of the Florida Keys, the heroes we meet gather literally at The Ends of the Earth – which is slightly rundown bar hiding out in the midst of God’s land. This is where the lost come to be found and where everyone comes to find something they have lost.
Due to a traumatic brain injury while serving in the military overseas, Walter Sherman (Geoff Stults) has turned his damaged mind into a tool for seeking out whatever anyone else cannot find. A fractured mind is not a mind to waste. The clever and warm way that Walter embraces his new life and the people that are drawn into it makes the series irresistible. Aided by a trusted friend and lawyer, Leo Knox (Michael Clarke Duncan), bed-fellow and local Deputy U.S. Marshal Isabel Zambada (Mercedes Masohn, and a renegade gypsy teen under his care, Willa Monday (Maddie Hasson), Walter embraces the world of the lost and unusual.
Threaded throughout the show is the underlying feeling of family and love. Walter’s ability makes him special, yet one has the sense that Leo, Isabel and Willa have their own reasons for loving this gifted man. He is not just a human blood-hound, but a man who still reels from the after-effects of a war that left him impaired and with a heightened sense of paranoia. Walter may look like a normal guy, but one with nightmares that haunt him. It is the cases and the protective cocoon that his friends surround him with that help Walter make sense of the world as he now sees it.
With quirky warmth, charm the THE FINDER invites us into this world where there is no case too small to track down — lost artifacts, lost places, and people who have fallen through the cracks of time. Finding things is Walter’s mission, but it also soothes the anxiety and worry of those who come to him seeking aid that other law enforcement cannot provide. It offers an unusual detective story in a modern world where it is all to easy to lose something precious to us.
