You Be the Critic: UGLY BETTY, GREY’S ANATOMY, THE OFFICE, SMALLVILLE & SUPERNATURAL

May 16th, 2008

Since frequent theTVaddict.com contributer ‘C.T.’ took the words right out of my mouth by saying that last night’s episode of “LOST Rocked,” I’m going to move on and simply mindlessly ramble about some of my other Thursday favorites.

UGLY BETTY finally brought the funny back by reuniting Marc and Amanda (”Marc and Amanda! We’re so funny together; everyone says so.”), putting Christina/Willi’s baby on the back-burner and having Gio step up and tell Betty, “I don’t want to be the rebound guy. I want to be THE guy.” Needless to say, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. No, we don’t want to be Betty’s guy, but we’re more than happy to never see the borefest that is Henry again. To paraphrase one of our generations great thinkers Paris Hilton [remember her?], Betty & Gio HOT, Henry NOT! In fact, here’s hoping that when UGLY BETTY moves to New York next season, the production ‘forget’ to tell Henry. Who’s with me?

As for GREY’S ANATOMY, I know I sound like a broken record — or busted Mp3 for all the young’ins out there — but Shonda Rhimes and Co. continue to hit it out of the park by offering up the perfect mix of hilarity and emotion. There was the absolute tear inducing story-line courtesy of brain tumor lady and her not-so-imaginary boyfriend. Hilarity thanks to the ‘new and improved’ Dr. Sloan, not to mention Christina’s continual descent into madness. Plus the obligatory Meredith/Derek melodrama allowing this TV Addict the opportunity to write the line I’ve been waiting all morning to type out, “I guess the bloom is off the rose!” (Zing!). Yes Meredith and Derek belong together, but am I the only TV Addict feeling somewhat bad for poor Rose? I mean Nurse Rose got exactly what she feared from day one — a heart broken courtesty of McDreamy. So cliché! Which is something GREY’S ANATMY usually abhors. See Dr. Hahn’s best rant of the night when the Chief tried to convince her to operate on his mentor, “I’m sorry is this going to be a story about how you were a struggling black med student who wanted to be a surgeon but no one would give you chance. And Walter Tapley gave you that chance and mentored you and without him you wouldn’t be where you are today?”

You Be the Critic: Sunday Night TV

May 5th, 2008

Since this TV Addict turned REEL Addict for the night by catching a 7:15PM showing of IRON MAN [click here for review], I leave it up to you, my fellow TV Addicts. Did BROTHERS & SISTERS up the Justing/Rebecca creep factor? Did Lynette institutionalize her two fire-starters on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES? Is anyone watching the soon-to-be-brilliant-but-cancelled ALIENS IN AMERICA? Post away with your comments below.

You Be the Critic: BROTHERS & SISTERS

April 21st, 2008

Not only did this TV Addict not make it home in time to catch the return of my favorite fictional BROTHERS & SISTERS, I woke up early this morning only to discover that GlobalTV [the Canadian Network that simulcasts the show] had hijacked the ABC HD feed and worse still, didn’t even bother broadcasting the show in high definition. Something which by the way I pay big bucks for. Needless to say, Global TV should expect an angry email in their inbox this morning [because that will show ‘em!]

You Be the Critic: THE OFFICE & 30 ROCK

April 11th, 2008

Far be it for this TV Addict to rain on the ‘Comedy Night Done Right’ parade. But SCRUBS aside, one thing was abundantly clear when it came to last night’s return of 30 ROCK and THE OFFICE. The members of the Writer’s Guild of America weren’t messing around. Pencils down meant pencils down.

When did THE OFFICE turn into CURBED YOUR ENTHUSIASM? Michael and Jan’s dinner party from hell was quite possibly one of the most horrifying, not to mention cringe-inducing half hours of comedy I’ve ever experienced. Sure, there were a few funny moments. Particularly Jan dancing to Hunter’s CD, Michael’s $200! Plasma TV, the video camera in the bedroom, Michael’s ‘bed’, Jan’s candle business, Dwight’s ‘date’… Okay, so there were more than a few funny moments. But there were also long stretches of awkwardness. And while most fans undoubtedly reveled in the awkwardness that was last night’s dinner party from hell. This TV Addict wasn’t one of them. To me ‘Comedy Night Done Right’ should have me genuinely laughing, not curled up in the fetal position, fearful of what will happen next.

You Be the Critic: CBS Returns as Funny as Ever

March 18th, 2008

Aside from having some of the lengthiest titles in the history of comedic television, last night’s two hour comedy block of THE BIG BANG THEORY, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE have one other thing in common. They all played a part in getting this TV Addict to utter five words he’d never thought he’d say, “So excited for CBS tonight.”

So kudos to the Tiffany network for finally putting together a hilarious string of shows that doesn’t include a reality TV show, a police procedural and/or the train wreck I like to call BIG BROTHER. Now onto some random musings:

THE BIG BANG THEORY
Sandwiched between the show’s hilarious opening and closing credits, THE BIG BANG THEORY not only makes this TV Addict laugh, it more importantly makes me feel a lot better about my slightly nerdy tendencies. In other words, no matter how bad things get, I’m no WoloWizard.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
As much as I loved Ted, Marshall, Lily and the Blarneystone, surely I’m not the only TV Addict starting to feel bad for Robin. With her and Ted officially kaput, is she ever going to get a story-line that doesn’t involve playing the sidekick?

You Be the Critic: Thursday Night TV

March 14th, 2008

Since I was at Massey Hall last night laughing away with the absolutely hilarious Chris Rock [Yes it’s tough being a TV Addict]. I leave it to you, my far smarter and better looking readers to fill me in [minus the spoilers]. Just how incredible were last night’s installments of LOST, ELI STONE, LIPSTICK JUNGLE and SMALLVILLE? Be the critic and post away.

You Be the Critic: TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES

February 12th, 2008

andy goode terminator

Okay, so perhaps my half-joking prediction for Brian Austin Green’s TERMINATOR role was a bit off base. But can you really blame me for thinking that the notorious B.A.G. might possibly be the show’s first robot/human hybrid? The evidence was all there! It’s been ten years since BEVERLY HILLS 90210 went off the air and Green hasn’t aged a day. Purely human genes, I think not.

That said, as each and every episode airs, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES continues to get more and more interesting. Clearly, Josh Friedman gets the fact that while fans will never tire of Cameron and the Connors facing down the occasional indestructible robot, the real drama comes from the relationships between the characters.

Like the episode’s finale scene. How great was the moment when John called Sarah’s ex-fiance Charley to help save her newly discovered brother-in-law? Talk about one awkward family dinner when Derek eventually wakes up from those multiple gun shot wounds.

You Be the Critic: LOST, ELI STONE & SUPERNATURAL

February 1st, 2008

Thanks to the phenomenal fourth season premiere of LOST (Can next Thursday come any sooner?), the return of SUPERNATURAL (How much fun were the Wisteria Lane Witches?) and the immensely entertaining first episode of ELI STONE (It’s EVERWOOD/ALLY McBEAL in a Lawyer’s office!) last night was a return to form for the night formerly known as Must See TV. Agree, Disagree, put your critics hat on and post away!

You Be the Critic: HOUSE, ONE TREE HILL and IN TREATMENT

January 30th, 2008

Since my head is still spinning from last night’s screening of CLOVERFIELD, this TV Addict has yet to catch last night’s installments of HOUSE, ONE TREE HILL and IN TREATMENT. So, aside from your general thoughts on the episodes, my questions today are three. First, is anyone dedicating thirty minutes a night to watching HBO’s IN TREATMENT? Second, were Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison thrown a bone… err line or two on last night’s installment of HOUSE? And finally, please tell me K-Fed left Tree Hill for good.

You Be the Critic: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH & CASHMERE MAFIA

January 24th, 2008

Last night, the TV Addict was so desperate for original programming that I tuned into THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. While on paper the show sounded intriguing; answer questions truthfully for the chance to win half a million dollars. The reality is far from it. Turns out that reveling in the misery of others is not as entertaining as it sounds and in the end, I simply felt dirty just for tuning. Rest assured I won’t be making that mistake again. (On a somewhat related note: Help me WGA negotiating team… your my only hope!)

The same can’t be said for CASHMERE MAFIA. Critics be damned, I’m loving this show. It’s light, fluffy and the perfect antidote to the grossness of THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. Did anyone else catch Bonnie Summerville’s ‘Nolita’ shout-out to hers and Darren Star’s previous brilliant but cancelled series KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL? And those tired of Caitlin’s is-she-or-isn’t-she lipstick lesbian story, take note. In a recent interview with the TV Addict (to be posted soon) Summerville revealed that the question of her ‘team’ will be dealt with in two weeks. As will Juliet’s status with husband of the year* Davis (*note sarcasm). How much fun was watching Juliet literally kick Davis to the curb? Of course my favorite moment of the night goes to Zoe. Who’s quickly turned into the show’s most entertaining and likable character. Not only did she totally pull off a fantastic birthday for her son, she managed to save an enormous business deal in the midst of all the paintball chaos. Pretty much, the coolest mom ever. I wonder how long until her marriage starts crumbling?

Agree, Disagree, Post away!
