There are a whole lot of reasons to be bummed when you’re the star of a much-loved television series canceled before its time. But if there’s an upside, it might very well be knowing exactly how pretty much every interview you do for the next few years is going to start: “Were you as disappointed as I was that [insert brilliant show's name here] was canceled?”

Luckily for this TV Addict, EVERWOOD alum Treat Williams couldn’t be more accommodating during our recent chat, admitting that while he was “surprised that EVERWOOD was canceled,” it was “kind of a blessing in disguise.” After all, says Dr. Andy Brown’s former portrayer, “Twenty-two episodes a year is a lot of work, and it was nice to spend more time with my wife and kids this year.

With the obligatory EVERWOOD question out of the way (as if we won’t be returning to that topic eventually), we’re ready to move on and discuss the actor’s return to television with TNT’s new medical drama, HEARTLAND, premiering Monday, June 18 in the very nice 10 p.m. slot, where it will follow one of cable’s hottest hits, THE CLOSER.

HEARTLAND finds Williams once again playing doctor, this time playing a brilliant transplant surgeon named Nathaniel Grant. Of course, what’s a medical drama without the prerequisite family drama? If you’re thinking this sounds a little like EVERWOOD 2.0 – or maybe DR. ANDY’S ANATOMY, don’t tell Williams so.

“As an actor, you play the person not the occupation,” he explains. “If five of the next great parts are doctors, I’ll be playing five more doctors. Dr. Grant is a lot darker, with issues that are more deep-seated. He’s a workaholic, probably the guy that Andy Brown used to be prior the death of his wife”

A quick peek at the show proves him right. Unlike the small-town problems and teen melodrama that surrounded his previous character, this outing has a darker hue, as might be expected of a show revolving around the life-and-death world of transplant surgery. And Williams couldn’t be more pleased with those differences.

“[EVERWOOD creator] Greg Berlanti once told me that he was consistently trying to wrestle the WB from turning our great family drama into a teen show, which it never was. TNT has embraced the fact that HEARTLAND is a serious adult drama. In the history of my career, I’ve never seen such a great campaign for any film or television series.”

With a winning mix of serious medical drama and the obligatory office romance – all played out by a very television-friendly ensemble, including FIREFLY’S Morena Baccarin – TNT is betting that HEARTLAND will replicate the success of its time-slot lead-in, THE CLOSER. Concludes Williams, “I think it’s great drama and deeply moving. If you want to forget about your life for an hour and watch somebody else’s, I think HEARTLAND’S a great way to do it.”

While many assume the biggest surprise from yesterday’s Global TV UpFront was Adrian Pasdar’s beard (Did his character really blow up in HEROES May finale? Or is he secretly preparing for a guest spot on CAVEMAN?), this TV Addict was more taken aback by the mob of protesters that had organized in front of Massey Hall prior to the start of yesterday’s event.

The protesters, it turns out are members of ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) and were out in full force to voice their displeasure with the way in which they believe Canadian broadcasters are neglecting the Canadian television industry.

“Canada’s private broadcasters are eager to hand over more than $250 million dollars on new American dramas and reality shows, when they should be investing in new Canadian dramas in their own backyards,” said Richard Hardacre ACTRA’s National President. “They spend millions of dollars on American shows in what amounts to an annual crap shoot that pays out few winners.”

Amidst this horde of actors were notable TV stars including Peter Keleghan, Gordon Pinsent, Shirley Douglas, Colin Mochrie and Wendy Crewson.

“We’re here to say that they [the networks] have a responsibility to the Canadian public out of the millions and millions of dollars they make from advertising, by showing American shows, to put some back into Canadian content.” explained Wendy Crewson, “We need to hear our stories, we need to see our people and our stories on the airwaves during prime-time hours.”

Yet the question remains, do Canadians care if our broadcasters produce original Canadian content or are we content with simply enjoying the same great shows as our American friends? Needless to say, this TV Addict could care less about telling ‘our stories’ and here are a few reasons why.

1. What exactly are ‘our stories’
It seems whenever the big Canadian broadcasters pony up money to tell ‘our’ stories, we’re left with generic sub-par versions of shows that are already being done better down south. What’s so ‘Canadian’ about Global’s BLUE MURDER (a generic cop show)? THE ASSOCIATES (think GREY’S ANATOMY with lawyers)? Or the biggest culprit of all, THE MIKE BULLARD SHOW (think Jay Leno, but less funny and even worse guests). Original Canadian content should be the responsibility of the CBC (Canada’s Broadcasting Corporation), isn’t that why they’re getting our tax dollars?

2. “We need to see our people on the airwaves during prime-time hours.”
‘Our’ people, meaning Canadians are all over the airwaves. Not only do numerous hit shows currently film in Canada — see SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, THE DRESDEN FILES, STARGATE, THE FLASH, EUREKA! to name a few, they’re populated with hundreds if not thousands of Canadian talent both in front of and behind the camera. Add to that the Canadian stars who’ve made a name for themselves down south, I’d say Canadian talent is doing just fine.

3. “Our broadcasters have decreased their spending on Canadian drama by almost $12 million over the past year,” says Stephen Waddell, ACTRA’s National Executive Director.
There’s a reason for that — nobody watches Canadian dramas. Memo to Mr. Waddell. If given the choice between NBC’s HEROES or Canada’s REGENESIS, what do you think the majority of the Canadian public is going to watch? Why should the networks be forced to spend money on shows that nobody cares about?

4. Why is Wendy Crewson protesting?
Does anyone else find it hypocritical that Wendy Crewson of all people is protesting against American content? Mrs. Crewson, have you taken a look at your imdb page lately? Have you noticed how much money you’ve made off American movies and television series? Refresh my memory — were you outside protesting at the Global TV UpFront the season you starred on 24? Didn’t think so.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Canada and love living in this country. Weather aside — be it social issues, health care and everything in between — we do almost everything better the United States. But let’s face it, America’s greatest export is Hollywood, and the one undeniable fact is that nobody on earth does television better than the USA. Isn’t it time we give them credit for something?

Which begs the obvious question: Which MARS cast member would you like to see Veronica bring with her to VERONICA MARS: FBI Edition (or is it MARS: The College Years II)?

Our pick for MARS version 2.0 is most definitely Mac. Since her first appearance way back in season one, the dynamic duo of Neptune High have put a smile on this TV Addict’s face whenever we’re lucky enough to see them in action together. Combine Mac’s brilliant mind and Mars’ sleuthing ways and you’ve got a force to be reckoned with. That said, we’re also not averse to seeing Papa Mars drop by for the occasional guest stint (we at theTVaddict.com love Enrico Colantoni).

Post away with your pick for Veronica’s travel companion, should she be lucky enough to see a fourth season.

If you’re a fan of VERONICA MARS you’ve got two reasons to smile today. First off, this being Tuesday we’ve got another new episode of VERONICA MARS tonight at 9PM on the new CW (with guest star Paul Rudd).

More importantly, Michael Ausiello is reporting today that not all hope is lost with regards to a possible fourth season pickup. In today’s Ausiello Report, Michael writes:

Since Gilmore Girls is packing it in, the network suddenly has an extra hour of prime real estate available. What are they gonna do, renew 7th Heaven again? (That was a joke, CW. Don’t get any ideas.)

Ausiello, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Here’s hoping the CW doesn’t pull an ‘EVERWOOD’. To read Ausiello’s report in its entirety, click here and be sure to tune into tonight’s fourth last VERONICA MARS… of the season.

Neptune’s hardest working detective returned from extended vacation last night and this TV Addict could not have been happier with the results. When we last left Veronica she was alone, a little bitter and not nearly as happy as one would imagine having just solved the Dean O’Dell murder mystery. Who knew all she needed was some time off?

Last night’s opening scene marked the returned of a rested and seemingly happy
Veronica. Does anyone else prefer Veronica and Logan ‘friend edition’ over the run-its-course Veronica and Logan ‘angst-ridden-suspicious-zero-fun’ relationship edition? I’ll take witty banter over Veronica secretly stalking Logan to see if he’s cheating on her any day.

That said, what also made last night’s episode so successful was the return of Veronica’s friends. Remember Mac? Wallace? Dick? Anyone? Veronica used to have friends… (hence the theme song, we used to be friends…) until they pretty much disappeared throughout most of this season.

Last night the gang was back and love’em or loathe’em — Piz, Parker, Dick, Mac and Wallace all played an integral role in adding to the enjoyment of the episode. Mac and Max — a match made in Geek heaven. Piz and Veronica — I’m going to hold off judgement and see where this is going (talk about the diplomatic way out!). Dick — oh what can I say about Dick? Not only was his MySpace dating scheme hilarious, Dick more importantly continues to be a fantastic foil for Veronica. Add Dick to Veronica (how dirty is this sounding?) and you’re guaranteed some classic Mars one-liners like this one, “Things I’d rather do than attend this party solo: Seven minutes in heaven with Scott Peterson; Ride the space elevator with Dick.”

Finally, it wouldn’t be a proper MARS wrap-up without mentioning Keith Mars and his new role as the head honcho, or Sheriff as he prefers to be called. I absolutely loved Keith’s story. Not only was it great to see actor Enrico Colantoni do something substantial (aside from just being Veronica’s Dad), I think firing half of the department will definitely make for some great new story-lines assuming MARS gets picked up for a fourth season. I imagine there are now a bunch of really unhappy ex-sheriff’s with a lot of time on their hand to plan their revenge!

In the end, Rob Thomas delivered on his promise to re-invigorate the show. Not only was last night’s MARS a return to form, it proved that college Veronica with stand alone mysteries can not just work, but work well. Needless to say, come the CW upfronts on May 17, Dawn Ostroff’s decision just got an awful lot harder.

I wouldn’t be much of a TV addict if I didn’t take a moment to remind you that VERONICA MARS finally returns to the CW tonight after far too long a hiatus (damn you PUSSYCAT DOLLS!). In tonight’s installment — the first of five all new episodes — Veronica is hired by a Middle Eastern restaurant owner to find out who’s been vandalizing their business with ethnic slurs. The show, which has been rumoured to be ‘on the bubble’ for months could definitely use your support. So if you’re a fan of quality television, help ensure the fledgling CW network doesn’t ‘pull an EVERWOOD’ and cancel VERONICA MARS before its time. Tune in tonight at 9PM est on the new CW (SunTV in Canada).

Find out in the special two-hour season finale entitled “The Bitch is Back” airing on the new CW on May 22, 2007.

Veronica Logan shippers, I apologize for starting your week off on the wrong foot. But as they say, a picture’s worth a thousand words and Veronica and Piz (or ‘PiZonica’ as by friend Ducky officially coined them) are looking mighty cozy in this photo that theTVaddict just obtained from the CW.

Remember MARS fans, the show desperately needs your support if there’s any hope for a fourth season. Be sure to tune in when the show finally returns on May 1 at 9PM on the (still somewhat new) CW.
