The Cohen’s Say Goodbye

February 8th, 2007

the oc goodbye final photo

FOX has just released this final (wipe tears from my eyes) photo of the Cohens, as THE OC prepares to end its four year run two weeks from tonight. Note the strategic hiding of Summer and Taylor’s hands — one can’t help but wonder if one of them has a ring on their finger! I guess we’ll have to wait until February 22 to find out, when we say goodbye to THE OC after a great four years.

[Update] TVseriesfinale.com has posted a nice piece featuring quotes and final thoughts from the cast on their last day of shooting (which was Friday Feb 2).

THE OC: Two Big Surprises!

February 2nd, 2007

On last night’s episode of THE OC, Julie Cooper (Nicol Roberts and now Atwood perhaps?) finally decided to give love a try, choosing Frank (Ryan’s Dad) over the seriously cash infused ‘Bullit’. Since the show is coming to an end in a mere three episodes, this TV Addict isn’t about to begrudge Julie a happy ending — even though I don’t know if Frank will be able to provide for Julie in the matter in which she’s accustom to.

That said, Julie choosing love over money wasn’t the most surprising thing with regards to last night’s episode of THE OC. The biggest surprise (and coolest thing) was that it actually turns out I went to summer camp (Walden) with one of the talented artists that performed the song that played over the episode’s final moments. Mike Wise (pictured above holding the guitar, performing at a camp-wide talent show) is the talented guitar player for THE MIDWAY STATE, an up and coming band from my very own home town of Toronto, Canada. The song that’s stuck in your head is called ‘Unaware’ and you can watch it play over last night’s final scene by visiting theTVaddict.com Screening Room.

And congratulations to everyone involved with THE MIDWAY STATE. Way to continue Canada’s fantastic tradition of exporting our musical talent south. Next up, GREY’S ANATOMY!

Thursday Night TV Thoughts

January 12th, 2007

As hard as I tried, as dedicated — sorry addicted as I am, I simply didn’t have the strength and stamina to get through an entire night of Thursday television. Like the marathoner who collapses right before the finish line, I had to summon every last inch of strength to get through the night and complete over six hours of television watching. I started off with THE OC (loved it), headed into UGLY BETTY (Sophia better be fired), moved onto GREY’S ANATOMY (Give T.R. Knight an Emmy), followed with THE OFFICE (I love Dwight), headed on to SCRUBS (Carla lost it, WOW) and finished off the knight with 30 ROCK (Where’s my Meat Machine™?). SMALLVILLE and Tori Spelling, I tried my best — but rest assured, you’re stored on my PVR and will be watched this weekend.

To conserve some energy and build up strength for next Thursday, the following our my Cole’s/Cliff’s notes version of my thoughts:

THE OC: While it’s slightly odd that THE OC has evolved into the Taylor show, she does do a killer French accent. Julie is foiled again, I wonder how she’ll redeem herself? Summer/Pancakes/Seth — adorable. One thing confuses me though, did they break up? Or are they on a ‘break’?

UGLY BETTY: For all her brains and beauty, Sophia really isn’t that smart. Publicly humiliating your bosses son doesn’t seem like the way to make it to the top. Sure your magazine launch is a huge success, but if I were boss, the closest you’d be getting to issue #2 is when you’re forced to buy it on the newstand while waiting in line in the unemployment line.

GREY’S ANATOMY: T.R. Knight gave his finest performance yet on last night’s edition of GREY’S. His scene with Meredith outside the hospital room was heartbreaking. Izzie finally deposits her inheritance — it’s about time. Obviously she’s going to want to donate to that poor girl with the spinal problem. My theory, in order to avoid getting to connected to every needy patient, Izzie will donate the money to the hospital and create the ‘Denny Wing’. Finally, can’t talk GREY’S without mentioning Seattle Grace’s hottest new couple (to be) — Addison and Alex. Can’t wait to see the inevitable fistfight between McSteamy and Alex.

THE OFFICE: Last night was all about Dwight, but in a good way. Firstly, as somewhat insane as he is, I love how the writers actually make him good at his job. The phone ploy he pulled with Jim was quite clever and at least give us viewers a plausible reason as to how Dunder Mifflin actually stays in business. Dwight also stayed trued to himself by protecting Angela’s honor, and quitting (gasp!) Dunder Mifflin. Perhaps I missed it, but how on earth did NBC not over-hype this completely with endless “Someone is quitting THE OFFICE” promos all week long?

SCRUBS: For six years Carla was the character who was always in control. Seeing Carla actually admit defeat was quite shocking — especially listening to her conversation with Jordan. Serious props goes to SCRUBS for once again handling the delicate subject of postpartum depression with such realism and dignity. Also, I love how Jordan is portrayed as this Godzilla-like pregnant woman (As she stomps down the hallways of Sacred Heart with “Isn’t She Lovely…” playing in the background). Talk about serious therapy for Jordan’s real-life husband Bill Lawrence!

30 ROCK: Last night’s episode of 30 ROCK was no doubt the series best to date. I would pay anything to watch Jenna’s film “Rural Juror”. More then that, two hilarious cameos by Whoopie Goldberg, and another hilarious performance by Alec Baldwin. This show keeps getting better and better. All that’s left is for NBC/Universal/Ge to actually start producing those Meat Machines™ (Knowing NBC marketing, no doubt plans are already in the work!)

Welcome to The CW B*tch!

January 3rd, 2007

Fear not OC fans, there’s actually some good news on the horizon. Eonline’s Kristin is reporting that the CW network head honcho Dawn Ostroff is “extremely interested” in picking up THE OC for a fifth season. With any luck we may get to celebrate Chrismukkah in 2007 afterall. Stay tuned to theTVaddict.com for all the latest OC news.

Update TV Critic Alan Sepinwall just talked to OC creator Josh Schwartz, who had this to say:

Part of my quote from the press release that didn’t make the cut was “There has been some speculation about a Season 5 on another network but this feels like the best time to bring the story to an end”. I felt better to go out now with the run we’re having then try and move the show, etc etc. and maybe not be able to deliver the same level of quality. Teen dramas have a shelf life. We’ve had a lot of parties on the show, and so I’ve learned, best not to stay too late.

Who knew last Chrismukkah would be our last?

It’s Official, THE OC’s Been Cancelled

January 3rd, 2007

theTVaddict.com has just learned from a source working on the production that THE OC was officially cancelled today by FOX. Naturally FOX is mum on the subject, but as soon as we hear something official from them, we’ll pass along the news. According to our source, the crew got the info on their call sheets today and although they knew it was coming, they’re still sad. THE OC will finish filming their final three episodes — leaving season four at a mere eighteen episodes (rather then the usual twenty-one). An unjust fate for a show that was truly on the upswing this season. As Taylor Townsend might say, “qu’une déception!”

Update (5:30PM: Click here to read the official cancellation press release from FOX.

New Years in THE OC

December 22nd, 2006

Seth and Summer getting married? Either the show’s writers are punishing actors Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody for their off-set romance (or showmance), or they know as well us we do that THE OC is on its last legs.

That said, I really enjoyed last night’s New Years-themed episode, and was in fact thrilled that Seth and Summer are not having a baby. Between the three babies on SCRUBS and the incessant baby talk on BROTHERS & SISTERS, GILMORE GIRLS and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, I’m quite frankly have as much baby talk as I can handle.

Is it strange that in just five episodes, the Ryan/Taylor relationship seems so much more entertaining then the somewhat stale Seth/Summer relationship? Sure the ‘high five’ on Seth’s part when he thought the baby was Taylor’s was pretty damn funny. But in reality, Seth is far too much of a child to even contemplate fatherhood. He can barely manage to get his own life together.

Moving on to Kaitlin. Can someone please explain to me how this girl has no friends and has to hang out with her mother’s quasi-boyfriend ‘Bullet’ on New Years Eve? Let me say this (and yes this may sound a tad stereotypical), in high school, if you’re a girl, and you look like Kaitlin — you automatically have friends. That’s just how high school works!

And finally, the big shocking finale! Which sadly, thanks to my high ranking placement in the hallways of television studios — I knew was coming. Ryan’s dad mysteriously showing up will make an interesting story when the series returns in two weeks. It was after-all, time to shake up Ryan’s life considering he seemed to be actually happy for a mere two episodes. I wonder what Mr. Frank Atwood (aka. Frank Perry) needs from Ryan? Let’s hope it’s a relationship, and not money. Lord knows Ryan deserves some happiness for once.
