In an effort to avoid the dubious distinction that comes with green-lighting the first cancelled show of the Fall, the CW tried their best to bury the news that production has been officially halted on THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE: TBL late Friday afternoon. But try as they might, the CW couldn’t stop the tweet. Which is why we thought it might be fun to compile our ten favorite TBL related ones, starting off of course with our own <strike>shameless twitter plug</strike> reaction upon hearing the news.

“Sorry CW, there is no hiding your massive failure on “Take Out the Trash Day.” THE WEST WING taught us well” @theTVaddict

“When the CW didn’t even bother sending out finished review copy of TBL pilot, the writing (or lack of) was already on the cancellation wall.” @roushtvguidemag

“I’m sad that Corbin Bleu took off his clothes for nothing. Colon TBL we hardly knew ya” @duckydoestv

“Bring on Life UneXpected! RT @TheLiveFeed: CW cancels Ashton Kutcher’s Beautiful Life – first cancellation of the fall http://bit.ly/fDuh9“ @stayingin

“This means I can delete that episode of “The Beautiful Life: TBL” from my DVR! http://bit.ly/FZ58g“ @hitfixdaniel

“‘Beautiful’ Disaster: CW tries to bury news of ‘Beautiful Life’ cancelation over Yom Kippur weekend. http://tinyurl.com/yd4vssn“ @TVMoJoe

“So my decision to not bother reviewing TheBeautifulLife paid off. Way to go, me.” @moryan

“it appears life wasnt so beautiful for the cw show – the beautiful life is fall’s first cancellation.” @laceyVRose

“Beautiful Life – They should have just turned the cast into models…wait for it…. who are also vampires. “That’s gold Jerry! Gold!”,” @seat42f

“CW cancels “The Beautiful Life”; will Mischa Barton blame wisdom teeth?” @gailpennington

Last year, Mischa Barton passed on the part of bad girl Georgina Sparks on GOSSIP GIRL, but there’s still a chance that she may cross paths with Blair, Chuck and the rest of the gang.

THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE executive producer Mike Kelley, who is “good friends” with GOSSIP producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, pitched his idea for a crossover between the two shows at a recent Q&A. It’s not hard to imagine a crossover between the two glitzy, New York-set shows, but the setting for Kelley’s idea is far from glamorous.

“Our cast is on the subway, and their cast is on the subway, and the subway shuts down. We don’t necessarily have to cross them. We can tell two stories with them in the background of us and maybe have one or two characters cross through,” Kelley described. “Something like that, that would be an event moment. It would have to be really creative. They don’t need us.”

Whether or not Barton will be on GOSSIP GIRL is a mystery, but she will very much be a part of THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE, Kelley and fellow executive producer Karey Burke emphasized.

“We love her. I’ve known her for years,” said Kelley, who worked on THE OC and created SWINGTOWN. “She looks great. Her acting is terrific. Her character is integral to all the stories, so her character is not going anywhere and neither is she.”

“She’s been nothing but a total pro,” Burke added. “Her situation did nothing to stop production or push production. It’s our own fault that we didn’t have our sets ready.”

Despite Barton’s real life health troubles, the producers aren’t taking it easy on her character Sonia in terms of subject matter. Sonia will still have to deal with living in the spotlight, escaping the paparazzi and what looks like a drug problem in the pilot presentation.

Kelley and Burke also cited the benefits of Barton’s modeling connections. Irina Lazareanu, one of Barton’s model friends who just happened to be around on set, cameos in the pilot as the first model in the Zac Posen show. Other famous faces appearing on the show include PROJECT RUNWAY judge Nina Garcia, designer Matthew Williamson and models Erin Fetherston and Jessica Stam. The show was also able to get a Versace dress for the pilot and a future episode will film inside Calvin Klein’s offices as the models shoot a Calvin Klein Jeans billboard for Times Square.

Expanding upon the pilot presentation,THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE pilot will add a fashion shoot and the introduction of Corbin Bleu’s storyline, who went from guest in the pilot to series regular. Bleu’s model/musician will no longer have a drug problem, but will instead enter a “kept boy” relationship with a powerful, older woman (Jaime Murray), trading sex for work.

Kelley also teased that “one of the characters that you think is probably going to be a regular on the show gets ousted, but will return.”

As the series goes on, it will explore the body issues that male models must face and might feature an appearance from executive producer Ashton Kutcher, but it’s much more likely that Kutcher will direct an episode rather than appear onscreen. And although Tyra Banks is already doing an arc on GOSSIP GIRL, she has an “open invitation.”

Meanwhile, Elle McPherson, who plays the head of the Covet Modeling Agency, is on for the first seven of the series’ 13-episode order. Her storyline will intertwined with Sonia’s personal life in a surprising way.

And if THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE sounds familiar, it might be because Kelley has enlisted SWINGTOWN and 90210 composer Liz Phair to score the series.

What am I looking at? Well, since you asked (1) A network that has so little faith in the intelligence of their audience — not to mention the show itself — that they’re taking the easy out by selling sex as opposed to such silliness as a plot or even concept; (2) A network that cancelled PRIVILEGED, a warm, witty, heartfelt show I wouldn’t be ashamed to let my non-existent daughter watch and replaced it with a show headlined by an actress who is no one’s idea of a role model; (3) A network so worried about the possibility (read: likelihood) of said actress’ well-publicized “personal problems” resurfacing that she’s been all-but-eliminated from the latest pre-launch publicity push (more of which can be seen after the jump); and (4) A show that will no doubt be a big hit — within the desired demographic — for the network, proving yet again that this TV Addict is rapidly becoming both too old and too smart for some of the crap being foisted upon us by The CW.

You’ve read his take on the most promising fall shows and least promising ones. Now, in what we promise is our final look back at the Network’s UpFront offerings comes our very own Ken Tucker in-training Aleks Chan, with a look at the shows that fall somewhere in-between.

ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE (CBS)
After the horridly ill-conceived COURTING ALEX, Jenna Elfman returns to the small screen as Billie, a San Francisco film critic who hooks up with a younger guy and – surprise – gets pregnant. Pregnancy as a premise hasn’t always worked, and the clips don’t really provide much hope that AOP will be any different, but Elfman is one deft comedienne, so if anything, it’ll be tolerable.

EASTWICK (ABC)
Also known as Charmed Lipstick Housewives and the City. Based on the John Updike novel about three women (Lindsay Price, Rebecca Romijn, and Jamie Ray Newman) who are imbued with magical powers, it looks as tawdry and superfluous as I remember CHARMED ever was – not that there’s anything wrong with that.

FLASH FORWARD (ABC)
Everyone in the world blacks out at the exact same time and for the same duration, during which they see a few minutes into their futures. The preview opened with a “From the network that brought you LOST,” which only prompted the following afterwards: this is going to be convoluted, tricky show, and if they don’t do it right, will be painful to traverse.

THE GOOD WIFE (CBS)
Julianna Margulies plays victimized really well, so it should suit her well in this drama where she plays the wife of a politician (Chris Noth, very much channeling Mr. Big) who takes after Eliot Spitzer, forcing her to return to her work as a lawyer after taking 13 years off. As long as they don’t fall into a procedural trap, could be a rich piece of drama.

HUMAN TARGET (FOX)
Mark Valley stars in this adaptation of the DC Comic, about a private investigator/bodyguard who works by impersonating people close to his clients. A lot of explosions and running around in the trailer – could be campy fun as long as it keeps itself from going too far over the top.

MERCY (NBC)
It’s the GREY’S ANATOMY spin-off nobody asked for: a hospital drama about “feisty” and “complicated” nurses who can save others, but can barely save themselves. The cast (which includes newcomer Taylor Schilling, MEN IN TREES’ James Tupper and GOSSIP GIRL’s Michelle Trachtenberg) could save it from being utterly insufferable.

NCIS: LOS ANGELES (CBS)
The first of what I expect to be many spin-offs of the popular procedural that everyone seems to be watching but not talking about. The backdoor pilot already aired a few weeks back on NCIS, and looks to be about the same: the cast (which includes Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J) is perfectly capable, the stories nice and easy, and the tensions is about as tight as seatbelt – comfortable. It’s perfectly harmless TV. That’s either good or bad, depending on how old you are.

PARENTHOOD (NBC)
Based on the 1989 Ron Howard film starring Steve Martin and Dianne Wiest, it sounds exactly like what it’s about, and marks NBC’s second attempt to launch this series, its previous foray having been swiftly cancelled in 1990 (but coincidentally starred a then unknown Leo DiCaprio). This one looks more promising (and stars Peter Krause and Maura Tierney), if a bit of a BROTHERS & SISTERS knockoff.

SONS OF TUCSON (FOX)
Tyler Labine (REAPER) plays oafish sporting goods store employee Ron Snuffkin, who is hired by three boys to play their father after their own is sent to jail. Also reminds me of MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE (appropriately seeing how MITM’s Todd Holland directed the pilot), it will be entirely up to Labine, who’s shown his comedic chops before, to keep interest from waning.

THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE (THE CW)
I don’t why the CW didn’t just call it a MODELS INC. remake, because it’s essentially what THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE is: Pretty young models livin’ really hard, really expensive lives, except this time in New York.

THE CLEVELAND SHOW (FOX)
FAMILY GUY’s brand of irreverent, arbitrary, largely childish humor looks as if it will serve this spin-off well. Starring the otherwise harmless second banana Cleveland Brown, it follows him and his son as they start their new life with their new family. Just like FG, you’ll laugh, but it will probably be twice as empty.

MELROSE PLACE
According to the official CW description: The new MELROSE PLACE features a dynamic ensemble of up-and-coming stars, along with two original cast members reprising the roles they made famous: Laura Leighton as Sydney Andrews and Thomas Calabro as Dr. Michael Mancini. MELROSE PLACE promises to deliver all the backstabbing and sizzle of the original series.

According to this TV Addict: We’re cautiously optimistic, assuming of course that the proverbial powers that be learned a lesson or two (of five!) from the colossal disappointment that was 90210’s first season. Plus, having Sydney Andrews (Laura Leighton) and Michael Mancini (Thomas Calabro) back in our living room on a weekly basis to wreak havoc sure sounds like fun.

VAMPIRE DIARIES
According to the official CW description: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is the story of two vampire brothers obsessed with the same beautiful girl, and battling to control the fate of an entire town.

According to this TV Addict: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES looks like the CW’s desperate attempt to jump on the TWILIGHT bandwagon. That said, said desperate attempt includes fellow Canadian and former DEGRASSI star Nina Dobrev, LOST’s Ian Somerhalder, EVERWOOD’s Paul Wesley and Steven R. McQueen, not to mention scribe Kevin Williamson. All of whom make up the reason we’ll be giving these diaries a few pages before we rip the CW a new one.

THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE
According to the official CW description: The fashion-based series gives viewers an exciting, behind-the-scenes glimpse at the cutthroat world of a group of young, beautiful and very sexy models living together in a models’ residence in New York City.

According to this TV Addict: The return of Mischa Barton and a back-stage pass to the scandalous world of modeling… beautiful indeed.
