Today’s TV Addict Top 5: SMALLVILLE Season 9

September 25th, 2009

clark kent smallville season nine

SMALLVILLE returns tonight at 8PM on the CW:
Which we only feel the need to remind you thanks to the CW’s super-lacklustre (nonexistent?) marketing campaign for any show that isn’t a reboot of an Aaron Spelling classic or involves vampires. Oh, and no, we’re not just bitter that the network completely ignored our free and sound advertising advice. Okay fine, maybe a little.

It’s a bird.. it’s a plane… it’s not under any circumstances…
… for legal reason super-you-know-who. But that aside, in ever other sense of the word, the ninth season of SMALLVILLE truly marks the ascension of Clark to superhero status. Faster than a speeding bullet, and decked out in a black trench coat that may-or-may-not have been ‘borrowed’ from the set of TORCHWOOD comes Kal-El. Who when he’s not spending time in the fortress of solitude learning “Superhero’ing For Dummies” from his Kryptonian father Jor-El, is saving innocent Metropolis bystanders and of course Lois (who naturally can’t seem to stay out of trouble) complete with his now iconic “S” as a calling card. (Turns out, engraving ‘Red Blue Blur” not only takes way too long, it causes too much damage!)

Call us a super optimist, but the more we see from the new season of SMALLVILLE, the more we’re thinking about jumping back on the bandwagon. How about you?

Advertising Anarchy: The Beautiful Clark Kent

August 21st, 2009

smallville_ad

As the saying goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Which is why, in our latest installment of Advertising Anarchy (Our take on how networks might wish to consider promoting some of our favorite new and returning shows this fall), this TV Addict puts aside our animosity toward the CW with regards to their penchant of selling sex to young women (see: campaigns for THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE and MELROSE PLACE) in an effort to give SMALLVILLE fans a break. After all, if anyone deserves a little love, it’s the ridiculously-loyal SMALLVILLE supporters who have spent the better part of nine years helping the CW (formerly the WB) rake in hundreds of millions of dollars sans splashy advertising campaign.

Morning Static: MAD MEN, SMALLVILLE, 24 & More!

August 18th, 2009

Welcome to our new morning round-up of big/interesting TV news that you may have missed over the past 24 hours because unlike us, there’s a fairly good chance that have a life outside of the small screen.

2.8 million Americans reinforce the fact they’re indeed smarter than a fifth grader by tuning into MAD MEN’s record breaking third season premiere. [EW]

After umpteen seasons on 7th HEAVEN, David Gallagher is finally being let out of Hollywood purgatory, signing on (alongside WAREHOUSE 13’s Allison Scagliotti) to SMALLVILLE as the Wonder Twins. [io9]

Melissa Joan Hart and Debi Mazar’s career trajectories officially hit rock bottom with yesterday’s announcement that they’ll be just a few of the D-Listers to go DANCING WITH THE STARS. [TV.com]

First Look: Brian Austin Green’s Metallo

August 17th, 2009

metallo

Meet Metallo — or as we like to call him — the only silver lining to the CW failing to pick up the much-buzzed about new series BODY POLITIC. According to TV Guide Magazine, Brian Austin Green plays John Corben, “a new Daily Planet reporter who becomes the comic-book villain Metallo in the aftermath of an accident that finds him mysteriously outfitted with a heart made of kryptonite.” In other-words, it’s the DC Universe’s answer to Iron Man. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Really Brian Austin Green, REALLY!?! You turned down a series regular role on ONE TREE HILL in lieu of a two-episode guest stint on SMALLVILLE, a series that (as we wrote yesterday) is already on the way out. Really!?!

SMALLVILLE: The Beginning of the End?

June 17th, 2009

smallville

Not to start a panic or anything among SMALLVILLE fans, but… um, yeah, enjoy the upcoming ninth season because chances are, it’ll be the last. Looking to place blame? Thinking maybe the rising production costs (including the ever-growing salary of star Tom Welling) or the shrinking audience (season two averaged 6.3 million viewers a week while the eighth season reached only 3.7 million) will prove to be the show’s kryptonite? Possibly… but it’s beginning to look like an assisted suicide with the network itself playing the role of Dr. Kevorkian.
