Tonight’s TV Addictions: March 25, 2009

March 25th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
In week three, the kids sing Motown. Anybody else feel as if this show has gone, as so many reality shows do over the course of their runs, from charming to almost sad?

SCRUBS (8PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Dr. Cox… wait, are we reading this right? Dr. Cox actually praises J.D.? Isn’t that a sign of the apocalypse?

BETTER OFF TED (8:30PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
The company tries to create meatless beef in the laboratory. Quick, someone get us that “Where’s The Beef?” lady from the Wendy’s commercials on the line! She’s dead? Oh. Um, never mind.

LOST (9PM ABC, “A” in Canada)
Someone goes rogue and causes a whole lotta trouble for the others on the island. Based on the commercials that have been airing all week, I’m going with Sayid. He’s got “rogue troublemaker” written all over him.

NEW & NOTABLE:
SURVIVOR (8PM CBS)
Tonight’s episode is either a not-as-new-as-they’d-have-you-believe clipfest covering the first 15 days or a brand new episode. Commercials say one thing, listings say another. Guess you’ll have to tune in and find out!

Tonight’s TV Addictions: March 18, 2009

March 18th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SCRUBS (8PM ABC)
The funniest comedy you’re not watching — because ABC decided to hold off on new episodes for the better part of two months only to bring it back with little-to-no-fan-fare on a completely different day and time — returns tonight. But hey, we’re not bitter. Really.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE (8PM ABC)
Maybe now that television’s funniest two mean mommies have finally gone into labor, someone at CBS can get their act together and develop a Marly and Lindsay spin-off.

BETTER OF TED (8:30PM ABC)
BETTER OF TED has the advantage of debuting as just the right time: when viewer’s wouldn’t mind reveling in corporate comeuppance. It’s big business satire anchored by more-moral-than-his-employers straight arrow Ted (Jay Harrington, channeling Jon Hamm, except with boyish charm), head of research and development for Veridian Dynamics, a company responsible for weaponizing pumpkins and freezing its employees on a whim. Stocked with a top-notch cast (particularly Arrested Development’s Portia De Rossi as Ted’s icy, tight-laced boss), it bares the same potential of so many failed ABC comedies: it’s funny enough, but inconsistent — it needs time it probably won’t get to find its footing. — Aleks Chan

LOST (9PM ABC, “A” in Canada)
Kate returns to the island just in time to ruin Sawyer and Juliet’s happily ever after… awwwwwkward.

DAMAGES (10PM FX)
Call us a stickler for details, but we’re fairly certain that the official episode description should say, “Ellen discovers a another dark secret about Patty’s personal life.”

Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 10, 2009

February 10th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SCRUBS (9PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Turk and Carla make a big announcement, which much to our chagrin probably does not include the words, “We’re sticking around Sacred Heart for a ninth season.”

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
By golly we’ve got it, the world’s worst drinking game. Take a shot every-time Astrid (the adorable Jasika Nicole) gets an actual line! But seriously folks, do not miss what Executive Producer Jeff Pinkner calls “a total game changer” of an episode.

90210 (8PM CW, 9PM Global in Canada)
Annie’s jealousy of Rhonda starts to wear on Ethan. Which is odd, because one would think Ethan would find Annie’s incessant smiling far more annoying.

PRIVILEGED (8PM CW, 8PM CityTV in Canada)
LIPSTICK JUNGLE’s Kirby (Robert Buckley) drops by PRIVILEGED. Which means by our calculations, PRIVILEGED fans best be starting their “Save Our Show” Campaign in 3… 2… 1..

February 3rd, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Hurray for Hollywood! Finally!

90210 (8PM CW, 9PM Global in Canada)
It’s time for Adriana to tell a few people she’s got a bun in the oven… including her fellow baker. Meanwhile, Annie’s feeling threatened by Ethan’s relationship with another gal, and Dixon finally gets Silver to open up. (Not like that, you pervs!) Wait… um, hello, why is there no mention of Brenda or Kelly? Do these people not know where their money is???

SCRUBS (9PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
What’s this? The potential of an unholy alliance between Cox and Kelso? Isn’t that a sign of the apocalypse? Somebody get the Winchester brothers on the line, STAT!

PRIVILEGED (9PM CW, 8PM CityTV in Canada)
Charlie finally man’s up and tells Megan how he feels. Of course, it true wuss fashion he does it has he’s about to leave for school in California. And it’s good news/bad news for Sage. On the plus side, she doesn’t have to worry that Luis will frown on her virginity. On the down side, he’s a big ol’ Jesus boy, which means she’ll probably stay that way for a while.

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Remember that plane full of dead people that kicked this series off? Tonight, there’s another plane-related disaster. Could they be connected? I don’t know, but look at those tricky folks at the aptly named FOX, starting this at 9:01 in the hope that having missed the first minute of everything else on the airwaves, we’ll stay tuned.

SCRUBS (9:30PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Another new episode? Um, ABC, you do know that sweeps has been moved to March, right? Why do I get the feeling you’re gonna be stuck with nothing to air except GEORGE LOPEZ reruns?

Good News, Bad News: SCRUBS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA & 90210

January 7th, 2009

Good News: Thanks to a guest starring turn by ex-FRIEND Courteney Cox and more importantly, actual promotion on behalf of ABC, last night’s season premiere of SCRUBS managed to win its timeslot among the coveted 18-24 demographic. Bad News: Too bad it still managed to get completely smoked in total viewers by both the CBS juggernaut known as THE MENTALIST and worse, THE BIGGEST LOSER on NBC. [Source]

Good News: For those of you who simply can’t resist, SyFy Portal has the scoop on how BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ends. Bad News: Television is far more fun when you don’t know what’s going to happen next. So how about demonstrating a teensy bit of self control by not clicking here! [Source]

Good News: The Janitor is finally getting a little respect, with Neil Flynn signing on the dotted line to star opposite Patricia Heaton in ABC’s comedy pilot THE MIDDLE. Bad News: If SCRUBS does get picked up for a ninth season, Sacred Heart will never be the same. [Source]

Good News: Donna Martin is returning to 90210 Bad News: Giving the writers of the fledgling re-boot yet another opportunity to delay any actual character development for the rest of the cast. [Source]

SCRUBS Gets the Last Laugh

January 7th, 2009

jd turk scrubs

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, SCRUBS creator Bill Lawrence revealed that he wanted NBC to feel stupid for letting the show jump ship to ABC. Well, Mr. Lawrence, we’ve got two words for you, “Steak Night!”… err, sorry… “Mission Accomplished!”

For last night’s back-to-back episodes of SCRUBS (which this TV Addict just had the pleasure of catching up on thanks to the magic that is ABC.com) was a welcome return to form for the series that has yet to meet a fantasy sequence it couldn’t run into the ground. In fact, thanks to the perfect combination of laugh-out-loud moments (Again, did you see that “Steak Night” dance? In all seriousness, somebody get Turk on DANCING WITH THE STARS!) and emotional heartfelt ones that give the likes of GREY’S ANATOMY and ER a run for their money. Bill Lawrence and company proved that not only is SCRUBS far from on life support — but remains, after eight seasons no less — one of the funniest and most enjoyable half hours on television.

(Fingers crossed Mr. Lawrence doesn’t go ahead and ruin it all by bringing back Nurse Roberts as a sexy ghost!)

Review: SCRUBS Season 8

January 6th, 2009

scrubs dvd
By: Aleks Chan

2009 was predetermined to be the year of change: Jay Leno will take over five hours of NBC programming this fall, PUSHING DAISIES will airs its final episode, and SCRUBS, the long-running medical comedy moves from its home of seven years at NBC to ABC. (Though at its core, SCRUBS was always an ABC show, seeing how the alphabet net’s ABC Studios produced it.) It was also announced last year that this eighth season would be Zac Braff’s final year, if there even is one after this.

Creator Bill Lawrence acknowledges this looming fate by helming a pseudo-creative renaissance for SCRUBS, which returns with two back-to-back episodes that manage to encapsulate the series’ breadth for juxtaposing irreverent humor with affecting emotional moments. It’s like a nostalgic retread for the auteur, one that’s completely aware of its age and doggedness: inner-monologuing and star doc J.D. (Braff) sports a ragged beard, lines growing thick and deep under his eyes. In a quieter moment with his longtime mentor/hero Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), he airs how he’s weary of his work: “I’m just tired of it all.” Dr. Cox, with no contest, concedes the remark.

Courteney Cox Will Be There For… SCRUBS

July 9th, 2008

Boy, when creator Bill Lawrence announced that he was looking for a ‘big name’ to play Dr. Kelso’s successor on SCRUBS, he really wasn’t joking. Direct from the Lord of the Scoop™ himself, Michael Ausiello: “J.D., Elliot and Co. have a new friend! Sources confirm to me exclusively that Courteney Cox is joining the cast of SCRUBS for a three-episode arc as Sacred Heart’s new Chief of Medicine.”

Of course such exciting news begs three important questions. 1) How bad is NBC looking right now for dropping what’s shaping up to be one helluva fantastic season of SCRUBS? 2) How confusing will the SCRUBS set be now that there are two Cox’s on the lot [That's Dr. Cox and Courteney folks.. get your head out of the gutter!] 3) TV Guide will report this news when?
