This just in: A very slow news day for Michael Ausiello! Who recently concluded in a BONES EXCLUSIVE that Booth and Brennan will finally put an end to the will-they-or-won’t-they speculation following an interview with executive producer Stephen Nathan who promised that the upcoming fifth season finale will be as big as last season’s finale, “but in a very different way.” Not ambiguous at all. Really.

Yesterday TVGuide.com asked whether the addition of Donald Faison to the new CBS pilot THE ODDS spells doom for SCRUBS? Today, theTVaddict.com has an answer for them. Ummm… No! Particularly since Donald Faison’s CBS deal has him in ’second position’ contingent on whether or not ABC picks up SCRUBS for a tenth season. That, and if anything spells doom for SCRUBS, it was last season’s disappointing ratings and somewhat less than creative direction. We’re just sayin’

According to our good friends over at Airlock Alpha, Syfy Network Executive of Original Programming Mark Stern promises that despite the disappointing ratings and hefty price tag for the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA prequel, CAPRICA, “is here to stay.” Adding, “We’re certainly not sharpening the axe by any stretch of the imagination… We all really believe in the show, and it has a lot of potential.” Phew. Because we at theTVaddict.com completely expected Stern, a mere four episodes into the show’s inaugural season to tell fans that there was no hope for a second season renewal and to not bother tuning into the remaining episodes.

Breaking News! Access Hollywood claims that Simon Cowell hopes AMERICAN IDOL can find a Taylor Swift-like winner this season. Stop the presses! Cowell hopes to find a winner akin to the world’s most popular recording artist rather than the next Taylor Hicks. Can’t wait to see what news Access Hollywood will break next?

At 11AM eastern standard time, television networks around the globe will interrupt their regularly scheduled programming to allow Bajillionaire Golfer Tiger Woods to apologize for his public transgressions. Echoing the sentiments of the Washington Post Sports Columnist Michael Wilbon “This is the greatest overreaction in the history of broadcast television.”

From “pleasantly surprised,” and “still funny,” to “such a disappointment,” and “Zach Braff needs to be scaled WAY down,” everybody’s a critic. Particularly when it comes to a series as beloved as SCRUBS.

Which is why, in the Part Two of our candid conversation with SCRUBS/COUGAR TOWN creator Bill Lawrence, the man himself was took the opportunity to allow the showrunner to address many of the concerns fans have.

As great as it is to see SCRUBS back on the air, I’m concerned that the overpopulation of Sacred Heart Medical School (thanks to the return of Kelso, Turk, Dr. Cox and J.D.) is taking away some much needed time to get to know the new cast members. Was there every any serious discussion with regards to not bringing back as many original cast members as you did?
Bill Lawrence: No. The appeal for me in putting these guys [Turk, Kelso, Dr. Cox, J.D.] into the ‘teacher’ role was that they’re (a) funny, and (b) I like the consistency of having these people in the world. I’ve been getting a lot of, “It seems really crowded,” and my response has been, “It’s only been two episodes!” If one were to go back and look at the original SCRUBS, I’d say after the first two episodes outside of Zach [Braff] all you thought was that Elliott is the neurotic one, Turk is the tough-cocky jock, Kelso is an a**hole and Carla is the strong nurse with attitude. No one was well rounded.

As you probably know, I wish the show had a new title. The burden of the show is that because it’s still titled SCRUBS, there is this expectation that we should be firing on all cylinders and know the world. Whereas, if the new show was called MED SCHOOL, I think people would see it more as what it is, a pilot and wonder, “Oh, I wonder where they’re going to go with these character and I wonder what the show will turn out to be like.” Make sense?

Completely makes sense. Seriously, you win the argument, [Or in the parlance of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER] I’ve been lawyered!
No it’s not an argument… I think that you’re right, but what’s interesting is that I follow the traffic online and have read, “Man, all these characters are one note.” And I’m like, “I don’t know about that.” I think that with J.D. being in the first couple of episodes there is not as much character development as we might have liked. But I would say, if you look at the character of Denise [Eliza Coupe], she started one-note on the show a year ago and now we have time as the show moves forward to open her up and I think we’ll do the same with the others.

It’s interesting your brought up Denise, because without knowing anything about the SCRUBS spin-off, I for some reason was under the impression that Eliza Coupe would be assuming J.D’s role as narrator. Was that ever a possibility?
It was. Except the issue for us was if you do that you have to repeat SCRUBS. And although we’re rarely persons of continuity, we already established that she was an intern, which is even a couple of years past med student. If you would have given her the narrator that means the new show would be just SCRUBS with a new character because she would have to be in the hospital everyday, she wouldn’t be teaching, there wouldn’t be a med school. We were more interested in making her a main character the same way Elliot was — but really pursue this relationship with this new guy and follower her pretty deeply.

In an effort to make the show seem fresh we really just wanted to go back to Med School with the whole notion that these kids are really just three months removed from being at Fraternity and Sorority parties and still behaving that way. You know, all caught up in who’s dating whom, going to class, and I felt that that would give the show a different feel. Whereas a show based around Eliza would just be SCRUBS Part II with a new intern.

Although it must be nice to be apart of ABC’s comedy resurgence this season, is the downside that there is now added pressure to succeed?
I don’t think so. There’s always been pressure to make your television shows work. One of the biggest complaints I get from writers/producers is that as recently as five or six years ago, if you had a show that people responded to creatively you would have a minimum of a year to get that thing up and running, get the characters rounded and people invested. Now you have to produce pretty quickly or you’re going to disappear. Which is understandable considering how much money networks spend on producing shows, especially single camera shows. But ABC has been really supportive with that and of me and I’m not feeling pressure because COUGAR TOWN is doing great, and is going to be on the air for at least another year and we’ll see what happens next year. For me to feel the pressure about SCRUBS, which has already been on for eight years is insane. People are either going to invest in these new young actors and characters and want to get to know more, or they won’t. But either way I feel good about it and feel like it’s funnier than a lot of what I see on television and I like where the show is going so I’m fine regardless of what happens.

If laughter is indeed the best medicine, Bill Lawrence may in fact be America’s answer to the heath-care crisis. Since bursting onto the scene as the co-creator of SPIN CITY and his little medical-drama-series-that-could follow-up known as SCRUBS, Lawrence has been consistently delivering three CC’s of laughter — and as an added bonus, enough music recommendations to fill up two iPods — to this TV Addict for the better part of two decades now. Which is why, it was such a thrill to be given the opportunity to talk with the showrunner in an all-too-brief interview yesterday.

But before we get to the SCRUBS goodies — complete with Lawrence’s defence of an overcrowded <strike>hospital</strike> Medical School which we’re saving for Tuesday — we thought, in honour of tonight’s brand new episode of COUGAR TOWN, we’d share Lawrence’s take on everything from Travis’ sexuality (We hope you’re happy @rural_juror) to Tiger Woods.

As COUGAR TOWN has evolved into more of an ensemble, I’ve really started to dig the series. Particularly the episode a few weeks back where Travis pretended to be gay to torture Grayson. But here’s the thing, myself (along with more than a few fans) were already sort of under the impression that Travis was in fact gay. Was there ever any talk in the writer’s room about going in that direction?
Bill Lawrence: [Laughs] First of all thanks for saying the nice stuff. I feel like we’ve gotten a real chance to find the show, especially as the show has become less the journey of one woman week-in-and-week-out struggling to survive being forty and single and more of an ensemble show about a dysfunctional family, which is essentially what it is at its core, I think we’ve gotten more successful with it. But No… Dan’s [Byrd] character, we always thought of him as a straight guy on this particular show. If we didn’t, it would have been a series of talks with the actor just to tell him, “Hey, I know we never talked about this when you got the part… but…”

Over the years many of your actors, including SCRUBS stars Donald Fiason and Dave Franco who I recently had the opportunity to interview have mentioned that one of the reasons they enjoy working with you so much is your “No Douchebag Policy!” Without naming any names of course, what inspired you to create such a welcome (and rare among Hollywood circles) philosophy?
When you start working on television shows I always had this philosophy of you do what you have to to get to do what you want to do. Which means you’ll work as hard as you can, deal with any situation to hopefully get to an opportunity where you get to create your own shows and make your own rules. Anyone that’s worked in Hollywood for more than a few years has at least fifty stories about some horrible human being — and not just actors — that they had to work for and cater to. It can be anybody from an executive producer to a film director, to an actor, to anybody that has power and doesn’t behave down very well. One thing that got burned into my head from personal experience is I am not going to ever work with or promote the careers of people that act shitty to people who are beneath them on the totem poll.

Which in truth, is not only one of the reasons I gravitate to your shows, but why I’m more inclined to give you a second, third and fourth look. I <strike>like</strike> love the idea of supporting people who seem like genuinely decent human beings.
It also by the way helps creatively. I did it just out of not wanting to work with assholes anymore. And the cool thing, in television specifically which is so much about chemistry is that if you put a cast together of good people that are friendly and get along with each other, like on SPIN CITY or other people’s shows like FRIENDS or HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER where you can tell that the folks like each other, it shows through and audiences pick up on it when they watch. And when they don’t, they can see it too. I really believe that.

I can’t help but notice that golf has played a fairly substantial role in COUGAR TOWN. With the recent “Tiger Woods” incident, any thoughts to boosting ratings by jumping on the bandwagon with a ripped-from-the-headlines gag?
I’ll tell you the toughest thing with single-camera comedy, especially around the headlines is that any joke we write now won’t be on television for two months. So it’s really hard on a week-to-week comedy show to do in the moment stuff so I don’t think we’re going to go at it too much. Plus, you can’t beat reality with that, it’s getting crazy!

I just thought golf clubs, SVU’s, relationships, the jokes practically write themselves!
It’s getting insane, hey, if we can think of a timeless gag after its past for a second I’ll probably go for it, but to try and make headline grabbing jokes, it’s kind of tough.

And finally, when you’re not running two shows and have a little free time in your life, any thought to doing something for the internet where you can retain absolute creative control?
I would do it in a heartbeat. I tried once before, I gave it a real shot with NOBODY’s WATCHING and I get great amounts of pleasure that you can still go on YouTube and see some of the internet stuff we did and there is still the occasional person who thinks those guys were just putting up videos on their own. That said, let me give you my cynical vision of the television business. The television business is clinging to the side of a cliff and holding on with one hand. The old way of doing business which was to put a show on network TV, sell advertising and then try to get to syndication is still the best way to monetize creative stuff and until somebody figures out how to make money on the internet it is more something you do for fun on the side. The problem is that TV is always the last to the game and usually the industry only picks up on trends about a year after the trend has died. The only one who has come close to figuring out a way after working his ass off the internet is Joss Whedon. But he had to write a f*cking musical and sell songs on iTunes. Otherwise your engaged in a hobby, but I would love to figure out a way to do it.

Well I for one look forward to that day. Continued success with both COUGAR TOWN and SCRUBS.
Daniel thanks for giving a sh*t about all these TV shows, I really appreciate it.

COUGAR TOWN airs Wednesday nights at 9:30PM on ABC (CityTV in Canada)

Tonight on ABC, actress Sarah Chalke will trade in her scrubs and stethoscope for Santa when she lends her voice to PREP & LANDING, a computer-animated Christmas special (spearheaded by Pixar genius John Lasseter) that has her voicing Magee, the ultra-efficient North Pole Christmas Eve Command Center Coordinator (NPCECCC for short!). And here to preview what we’re sure ABC hopes will become an annual <strike>cash cow</strike> holiday tradition is Chalke herself, who was kind enough to take some time to talk about what it was like voicing an animated elf, in addition to of course answering some very pressing SCRUBS-related questions.

On last week’s SCRUBS season premiere, your belly spoke volumes, but your character, well, not so much. When will Elliott be returning to Sacred Heart and when she does, will her focus be more-so on J.D. or medicine?
Although my belly was in [last week's] episode more than me, I’m signed on for four episodes and when I do return Elliott will get to be involved with both J.D. and the hospital. Which is great, because the new cast is fantastic. SCRUBS was the best job I’ve ever had by far and after-season-after-season of “Oh God it’s Over!” it’s really kind of cool that the show gets to live on.

Are J.D. and Elliott having a boy or a girl and do you have any names picked out?
For Elliott and J.D. it’s a girl, for me it’s a boy [Chalke's real-life pregnancy was written into the show.] In terms of names, nothing has been picked out for both Elliott or myself, which is a problem because the [real-life] baby is coming in a few weeks and is due on Christmas. Although I feel like it would be very-J.D-like to choose “JD Jr.” even though personally I’m very anti-junior!

Tonight will mark what I believe is your first foray into voice-over acting. What, aside from the ability to show up to work in sweatpants was the attraction?
Voice acting was really just so fun and different. I got to come in about three different days and simply record the dialogue line-by-line. You get to try a ton of different ways in which to read the lines while the animators and directors — who have been working on this project for two years — show you all these incredible storyboards. Plus, getting to see your nieces and nephews come down from Canada to watch the premiere and then quote lines was so much fun.

The special is produced by Pixar’s John Lasseter. What was it like getting to meet the genius behind so many of my favorite animated films?
John Lasseter is so ridiculously talented and some of his movies are my favorite movies of all time. I still can’t even believe the first ten minutes of UP. I laughed, I cried, it was unbelievable.

Any chance this special is a stepping stone to a role in a big screen Pixar adventure?
From your mouth to YaYa’s ears! I would love nothing more.

As someone who has stuck with SCRUBS from episode one, last night’s back-to-back return was for lack of a better word: A massive disappointment. That said, having the utmost respect for creator Bill Lawrence and his wish to have a-go at SCRUBS: THE NEW CLASS if only so that hundreds of hard working writers, crew members and actors didn’t find themselves out of a job during this unfortunate economic downturn, this TV Addict thought — rather than take the easy way out by proclaiming the new SCRUBS D.O.A — we’d offer up a few helpful suggestions on what needs to be fixed.

Zach Braff needs to go, and stat!
When we first met the character of John Dorian eight years ago, his incessant need to be loved and never-ending attempt to win Dr. Cox’s approval was both endearing and funny. Yet after season after seasons of watching JD devolve into an overgrown man-child with a penchant for hugging and a propensity for “guy love,” the joke is waaaaaay past its best before date. So much so that we found ourselves actually feeling bad while watching this impending fictional father-to-be continue to so desperately seek the approval of others. Sure, on paper, having JD help launch this new class of SCRUBS might have seemed like a good idea — but in reality — it did nothing more than depress us. And worse…

… Remind us that Kerry Bishe is no Zach Braff.
Bishe, who has the unenviable task of stepping into Braff’s shoes as neurotic narrater/newcomer Lucy Bennett simply didn’t show that she has what it takes to carry a series on her own. After-all, as loyal fans of SCRUBS might recall, the series in the beginning was truly about JD’s journey. A journey whose success and failure pretty much hinged on the immense likability of a then young, excitable and very marketable Hollywood “It” Boy. Only later would the series evolve into the live-action equivalent of THE SIMPSONS as season after season allowed for the addition of a whole slew of characters that comprised Sacred Heart…

… Which brings us to this cast of characters.
Although crutches and hospitals traditionally go hand-in-hand, last night’s season premiere relied far too heavily on them. And by that we mean, if SCRUBS version 2.0 is really ever going to stand on its own two feet, it’s going to have to do so by relying far less heavily on familiar faces such as Turk, Dr. Cox, and Kelso. Whose stories, are not only tired (Seriously, after eight seasons do we really need to see Dr. Cox give another med student a hard time?), but take away valuable screen time from the new crop of Med students who are, through no fault of their own, so forgettable we only remember them by their clichés (see: Damaged, jock, Crazy neurotic blonde, and Richie Rich.)

Agree, disagree, post away!

By: Aleks Chan

At this year’s Television Critics Association soirée, SCRUBS creator Bill Lawrence was refreshingly frank in his interviews about what led to SCRUBS – which after being abused on NBC for seven seasons, moved to ABC last year for a supposed final season of mediocre ratings – being brought back for a ninth season, revamped, recasted, and relocated. Though he stands to make very little off this season, he’s doing it for his team: “It would be really cool for everybody to keep working because there aren’t a lot of jobs out there.”

He also told The Newark Star-Ledger’s Alan Sepinwall the following disclaimer about SCRUBS 2.0:

“The one thing I’ve said to everybody, and it’s a quote I’m living by: It very well may suck. But don’t say it sucks until you see it. And my pledge is that if it sucks, it’s not going to suck in a fizzly way. It’s going to suck in a giant, ‘Oh my god’ kind of way, because we’re really swinging for the fences and trying to do some big stuff.”

Tonight’s premiere does little swinging at nonexistent fences, but is hardly worth acknowledging as self-sabotage. Really, this is more like SCRUBS 1.5: a half-realized spin-off that’s been lumped together to satiate the tempers of the SCRUBS stronghold who contend that last May’s finale was the best stopping point for series. It’s new, but not really!

This season, Sacred Heart Hospital has been torn down and rebuilt on the Winston University medical school campus, where focus has been shifted to a new class of students. It’s been a year since the finale, and J.D. (Zach Braff, who has signed on for a few episodes to “smooth” the transition to a new female lead) has returned to teach, as has his best friend and man-crush Turk (Donald Faison) and his mentor/verbal vivisection impresario Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley. Faison and McGinley are the only two regulars signed on to continue with the show, but others promise to make appearances.

Our attention is then directed to the new cast, who are introduced rather broadly: Lucy (Kerry Bishé) is the new primary protagonist (she will also take over narration duties from J.D. in the coming weeks), doe-eyed and naïve, Drew (Michael Mosley) is slightly older (so easily annoyed) than the rest of class, having bombed med school previously, and Cole (Dave Franco) is a smarmy, surfer-tongued brute taking advantage of his family’s deep pockets (which financed the school and hospital’s building). Eliza Coupe returns after being upped to a series regular from a recurring role last season as Denise, a sourpuss tough girl with a secretly soft heart and is an adviser to the students.

The opening half-hour strains to get the ball rolling, clumsily setting up a premise that seems a little cheap: Lawrence has implied that the docs were always teaching classes while also administering to their patients all along and that the show never focused on it. It’s as if the show picked everything up and moved to the office down the hall. And though it seems to have been the intention all along to keep the same location, starting over would have been more sensible, and it wouldn’t feel like the show was constructing extensions out of thin air to introduce characters that barely resonate.

And though I will admit to having intermittently loved and loathed the show over its run, I agree with weary SCRUBS fans that the finale was a comfortable resting place for the series. But I do not see this new season as a betrayal, but rather an unfortunate unwillingness to let the ride come to an end. It plays heavily from the SCRUBS playbook, replete with fantastical flashbacks, slightly over-the-head pop culture references, and heartfelt, message-y montages. But instead of springing forward with a renewed energy, this SCRUBS feels tired – even Dr. Cox’s usually brilliantly scathing staccato takedowns sound winded.

Perhaps by the time J.D. departs (Braff is only committed to six episodes), this new SCRUBS will have fleshed out its new cast beyond their casting descriptions and maybe even settled into a format that better suits it than rehashing the SCRUBS of old. There’s some hope – J.D. opines: “Part of me hates how familiar this seems. I hope I can find a way to make this all feel new.” Me too. Grade: C+

After two networks, countless time slots and more ’series finales’ than <strike>7TH HEAVEN</strike> we care to remember, SCRUBS returns to ABC tomorrow night for an <strike>unprecedented</strike> unexpected ninth season. And in honour of said momentous occasion, this TV Addict just got off the phone with Donald “Don’t call me Screech” Faison (Turk) and Dave “Don’t call me James” Franco (Cole) who were kind enough to take some time to talk about what fans can expect from SCRUBS: THE NEXT GENERATION.

After season after season of relative job insecurity, just how surprised are you to be promoting the ninth season of the show?
Donald Faison: I don’t know if I’m surprised as much as I am happy. I’m ecstatic that the show came back another year. I hope this doesn’t sound too cocky, but I have the opportunity to make TV history with a show that might run even longer thanks to a bunch of new cast members and new story-lines. It’s great.

Has there been any talk amongst the cast with regards to the parallels between this new version of SCRUBS and SAVED BY THE BELL: THE NEW CLASS?
Donald Faison: I say that all the time! Honestly, I do think it’s like SAVED BY THE BELL: THE NEW CLASS except that I don’t want to be Screech or Belding [Laughs]. I love the new people and I think it’s great that it’s sort of like a revolving door at the hospital because that’s really how a hospital operates. People come and people go.

One of the people who probably won’t be coming through that revolving door this season — at least according to reports — is your fictional better-half Carla (Judy Reyes). What’s it been like not working with someone with whom you had such a close relationship for the previous eight years?
Donald Faison: It’s different because Judy and I had great chemistry. Other than Zach, Judy was the other person on the show who I worked with a lot and had great timing with. With her being gone, it’s a different show and a different Turk. But somebody has to stay at home and raise the two kids while Turk is the Chief of Surgery!

Fair enough, although having watched the show from day one, I’m not gonna lie. It is a little strange not seeing Carla, has there been any talk at all of a guest appearance?
Donald Faison: I have no idea. To be honest, I don’t know what’s going to happen with that.

Dave, as the new kid, what’s it like joining such an established comedy?
Dave Franco: It has been fun man. Not to take away from any previous projects I’ve worked on, but this is by far the most fun doing anything up until this point. And I’m not just saying that because Donald is sitting right next to me. I think a lot of that is because the people are really so cool and really grounded and I think that comes from the creator, Bill Lawrence. He has this no a**hole policy, from the cast — right on down to the PA —he won’t hire anyone who is not a genuinely good person and great to be around.

Although funnily enough — on screen — your character is a bit of a womanizing a**hole. How long until we get to meet the parents responsible for turning Cole into such a womanizing S.O.B?
Dave Franco: You’ll meet my mom briefly in the first few episodes, but I definitely talk about my parents a lot. [The character I play] is a terrible kid, but as the season progresses you’ll start to understand why he is the way he is. So while he remains a d*ck throughout, at least you’ll be able to sympathize for him.
Donald Faison: Your character might be a douche, but he has many redeeming qualities and as the season goes on everybody will understand what I’m talking about.
Dave Franco: Thank you Donald.
Donald Faison: Hey, I don’t want everyone to start calling you an a**hole!
Dave Franco: Yeah right!

And on a somewhat unrelated not, I’m curious about your real-life movie star brother. Does having James Franco as an older brother make things easier or harder for an up-and-coming actor in Hollywood?
Dave Franco: I would say it’s harder or easier. It is what it is. He [James] is great about it because he has left me kind of find my own path. He doesn’t really intervene, or tell me what to do, he let’s me learn from my mistake. At the same time if I ever have a question, he’s there to answer it. But at the same time, as much as I respect him and do want to work with him at some point, I want to have my own career.
