How do we know that Entertainment Weekly isn’t overstating things when it promises that tonight’s action-packed third season premiere of KYLE XY plays out like a one-hour version of SPIDER-MAN?

Well, this TV Addict (alongside fellow TV Addicts Ducky, Amrie and Rae) were (not so) recently given the fantastic opportunity to chat it up with Jessi XX herself way back in July at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con.

What follows is not only what actress Jaimie Alexander had to say about what the future holds for Jessi XX this season and why playing the proverbial outsider mean so much to her. But perhaps one of the most eloquent and meaningful answers from an actress we’ve ever had the pleasure of posting at the end of this interview.

What can you tell us about what is in store for Jessi this season?
Jaimie Alexander: This season, Jessi goes through a lot and must deal with normal human emotions such as being in love, being torn about who she is and battling hart to try and find out where she fits in. There are time when she’s going to feel worthless and times when she will feel like she has really has made a difference. She’ll break your heart this season.. umm.. I mean I’ll break your heart! Trust me, some of the things I was like … I’m going to need a Martini at the end of the day. It was pretty rough stuff.

Anything that might surprise the fans?
There are so many stunts this season. They really upped the sci-fi this year. A LOT! Matt [Dallas] and I both were shocked. There’s a lot of ass-kicking and Kyle has a lot of stunts, which was different because last year I had a lot. There’s also lot of exploration with regards to the new powers both of us have, we share. Jessi and Kyle spend a lot of time finding out about eachother and becoming more comfortable with how they were brought into this world. It’s pretty amazing.

Also, Jessi does get a love interest and moves in with the Trager family which really stirs things up between her and Lori.

The writers really are amazing this season, not that they weren’t before. But I have not been as happy working on this show as I have been this season. Really, it’s been a full on pleasure. There are also a lot of new characters which are pretty stellar. We’ve added some ethnicity and accents.

I imagine it’s nice to finally not be the ‘new girl’ on set?
I’m still the one who entered in season two! But now I get to play pranks on all the newbies that we have this year.

What’s the best thing about getting to star on a show like KYLE XY?
I love talking to fans of the show. I actually have more fun talking to people who enjoy the show than working on it because it fuels what I do. I’d have no reason to work on the show if nobody watched it.

Well now is your chance. What message would you like to send directly to your fans?
I want kids to know that while you may be the outcast now, the things you get teased for in school are really you best attributes. I was on the high school wrestling team, I have a deep voice and I’m really tall. Those thing seem to be my best attributes now.

KYLE XY kicks off its third season tonight at 9PM on ABC Family

KYLE XY takes teen alienation to a whole new level. Most teens don’t feel like they belong to their peers, family and sometimes the human race. That’s never been truer as in the case of Kyle XY (Matt Dallas) who in season one of this ABC Family series woke up nude in a forest near Seattle with no memory of how he got there. In fact, Kyle woke with no memories at all and no connection to any family, place or time. Yet Kyle he possesses superhuman strength and a powerful brain that can do complex calculus like most of us add one plus one. Kyle’s purpose is to find out who he is.

In season two (a full 23 episodes compared to the opening season’s 10), Kyle’s continues to study under Adam Baylin (J. Eddie Peck) who teaches Kyle about his otherworldly powers, like mental telepathy, and provides further clues about his origins. The crucial one being that Adam wasn’t born, but created in a lab.

However, Kyle keeps his studies with Baylin secret from the Tragers, his adopted family. This strains Kyle’s relationship with parents Nicole and Stephen (Marguerite MacIntyre & Bruce Thomas) who continue to prefer Kyle to their own teenage children, Lori and Josh. Meanwhile, Kyle further develops his attraction to neighbour girl Amanda (Kirsten Prout).

In season two, a major storyline emerges when an “XX” female like Kyle (played by Jaimie Alexander) is “hatched” and wakes up naked in a forest as a wild savage. She roams the Seattle area until the company that created her, Madacorp, hunts her down and reprograms her into Jessi. Jessi becomes Kyle’s foil: vicious and ready to kill. And her target is Kyle.

With its brooding pacing, paranoid atmosphere and setting in the American northwest (filmed in B.C.), KYLE XY sometimes feels like the son of X-Files. It’s really a whitebread soap opera about teens searching for their identity. However, the show avoids slipping into cheesiness due to its strong writing and smart casting starting with lead, Matt Dallas, who plays Kyle as strange, yet always sympathetic. We want to learn who Kyle is.

The DVD package rewards fans of the show. It packs eight incisive audio commentaries by the producers, writers, directors and stars across six discs. Further commentaries are found on all the many outtakes, including the alternate ending to the season finale. Two of the three featurettes are worth viewing. The Science of XY reveals the influence of Einstein, the genius who gestated longer than usual and inspired the show’s premise: what if someone gestated for 16 years? Living with the Xs is a fun day-in-the-life of stars Dallas and Alexander, from dawn to dusk as they arrive early on set, work out in a gym, record voice-over in a studio, and do promo events like a block party. The other featurette, Facing the Future, is a fluffy cookie-cutter promo where the stars and creators hype the current season.

Overall, this is a worthy package for KYLE XY fans and serves to promote season three which premieres on January 12.

With ABC FAMILY airing the KYLE XY summer season finale tonight at 8PM — we at theTVaddict.com thought it would be a cool idea to check in with Kyle himself Matt Dallas. Enjoy our ten questions with Matt Dallas and serious thanks to all the fans for their input and great questions.

With KYLE XY reaching the halfway point of its season tonight, what can fans expect when the show returns in January?
Matt DallasThis half, Kyle really learned about his abilities and what he’s capable of. The second half of the season will really raise the bar in terms of stories, relationships and mystery.

Will Kyle be developing any new abilities next season?
The interesting thing about Kyle is that he’s always growing and developing. In the season’s second half, his abilities will grow more powerful. But more importantly, he’ll also discover a lot more about what Jessi’s capable of. We’ve seen Kyle do these amazing things, but you have to remember — Jessi was in ‘the pod’ longer. There’s a possibility she’s far more powerful!

Speaking of Jessi, there seems to be a love triangle developing between Kyle, Jessi and Amanda.
There’s definitely competition between Jessi and Amanda, but Kyle is such a pure character — and his attraction is really towards Amanda. Amanda is such a beautiful soul so it’s kind of hard for someone like Jessi to come in and mess with that.

Two beautiful girls fighting over you, tough job but somebody’s got to do it right?
[Laughs] I know! Both girls are so cool and have great chemistry with Kyle. It’s really fun to play scenes together. And Jaimie Alexander [the actress who plays Jessi] has been such a fantastic addition to the cast this season. She really was that missing puzzle piece that fit perfectly.

The highlight of KYLE XY for this TV Addict is the relationships between the characters. What are some of your favorite Kyle relationship?
I love playing scenes with every member of the Trager family. But Kyle’s relationship with Nicole is one of my favorites because it’s so different and unique. She’s trying to play a paternal role while he really wants to be a normal kid. Yet at the same time, they know it can’t be that way.

Kyle’s relationship with Tom Foss is so cool, because he’s mentoring Kyle. They have a strong relationship, and I think Foss cares for Kyle in a way he’ll never admit.

But Kyle aside, I love watching Josh and Andy scenes because they have such great chemistry together.

The TV Addict attended the San Diego Comic Con a couple weeks ago and was amazed at the number of fans swarming the KYLE XY booth. Did you ever in your wildest dreams imagine that the show would turn into such a hit?
I had no idea things would turn out like this. When I first signed on, I thought it would be small show on ABC Family. Yet KYLE XY really became the centre piece of the ABC Family re-brand.

How do you deal with showing up to a room of 4000 fans?
As we were about to go onstage, April turned to me and was like, “Oh my God, these people are all here for us, this is crazy.” And I’m thinking, “I know, can you believe it!” Comic Con is completely overwhelming but at the same time, so flattering. It’s so neat to feel that connection to the fans. Pretty much, the Comic Con panel was one of the most amazing experiences ever.

One of the things that attracted fans to KYLE XY initially was that eye-catching and slightly risque promotional poster. How surprised were you by the show’s advertising campaign?
Obviously I had no idea the poster would have such an affect. Yet it catches your eye and people know it even if they don’t know the show. It’s really so funny driving through LA and seeing yourself holding up your shirt. The poster did exactly what it was supposed to do — get people talking about the show.

Poster aside, a lot of KYLE XY’s subject matter has been surprisingly adult for ABC Family.
Creator Julie Plec really wants to touch on current events. When we were at Comic Con, so many parents came up and thanked us for making a show they can watch with their kids. Look at ‘Free to Be You and Me.’ [a recent episode] The episode asked why are same sex couples not okay when straight couples are. The episode sparked a lot of conversation and got parents talking to their kids, which is exactly what we strive to do.

Has KYLE XY been renewed for a third season yet?
I don’t know if there’s going to be a third season yet. Hopefully we’ll find out soon.

Assuming there is a third season — and odds are good that there will be — what challenges would you like to see Kyle face in the future?
Now that he knows who he is and his purpose, I’d like to see Kyle touch the world. Start doing things that are meaningful. Have Kyle really help people and change them, use his abilities for something bigger than simply saving a cat from a tree.

Was it not refreshing to actually be given some answers to a TV mystery? Serious kudos goes out to the show’s creative team for planning ahead (as they promised at last summer’s Comic Con) to ensure fans got a completely plausible answers for why indeed Kyle has no belly-button.
