Tonight’s TV Addictions: April 28, 2009

April 28th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The remaining five interpret songs popularized by the Rat Pack.

FRINGE (8PM CBS, Global in Canada)
Now far be it from us to tell Olivia, Peter and Walter how to do their job, but maybe after they look into tonight’s serial-killer-of-the-week they wouldn’t mind taking a look at this whole swine flu thing. We’re just sayin’

90210 (9PM CW, Global in Canada)
And the #1 sign May sweeps has begun: Naomi’s never before discussed big sis surprises everyone by returning to town.

NEW & NOTABLE:
NCIS (8PM CBS, Global in Canada)
Because it’s never too early for a little fall TV preview, Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J drop by NCIS giving us an early look at next fall’s NCIS spinoff which takes place in the NCIS Office of Special Projects in Los Angeles.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Strap on your dancin’ shoes and get ready to boogie oogie oogie ’til ya just can’t boogie no more. That’s right, it’s disco night. I’ve avoided this show like the boil on the butt of humanity that it is, but even I am tempted to tune in tonight.

90210 (9PM CW, Global in Canada)
Donna and Kelly bond. I’m sure lots of supposedly interesting things happen to the “new generation” of Beverly Hills residents, but who cares. It’s Kelly and Donna, together again!

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Olivia witnesses a suicide… in her dreams, and it soon becomes apparent her nightmares could be connected to the ZFT manifesto. All of which would certainly mean a lot more to us if we remembered what exactly the ZFT manifesto was.

NEW & NOTABLE:
SAMANTHA WHO? (8PM ABC)
Who out there was asking for more of this show? (Anyone? Bueller?) Well, whoever you are, ABC heard and is responding with not just one but two new episodes airing back-to-back! (I’m going to guess they were so busy responding to your request that mine — that they not cancel SAMANTHA WHO — got lost in the shuffle. I hope you’re happy.)

Tonight’s TV Addicions: April 14, 2009

April 14th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Tonight’s big IDOL mystery has to do not so much with why director Quentin Tarantino is mentoring a bunch of singers. But rather, if AMERICAN IDOL will be able to ‘cram’ all 7 finalists along with the obligatory judges critiques into a mere sixty minutes! Stay tuned…

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Animal rights activists continue to take a prime-time beating (see: DOLLHOUSE and NUMB3RS) when a rescue mission at a laboratory backfires releasing a vicious beast on an unsuspecting public.

90210 (9PM CW, GlobalTV in Canada)
Not only did Donna Martin graduate, it turns out she may have put those smarts to good use. How else to explain Tori Spelling returning to 90210 on the same exact day her new book Mommywood hits the shelves. Daddy would be proud. Candy, well… not so much.

Why Casting Leonard Nimoy on FRINGE is Highly Illogical

April 9th, 2009

leonard nimoy

Putting aside the welcome ratings bump that FOX will undoubtedly see when Leonard Nimoy makes his first appearance of what is said to be a multi-episode arc on the May 12th finale of FRINGE, this TV Addict can’t help but feel that the casting of Leonard Nimoy as the mysterious William Bell is, well… highly illogical.

Especially after one factors in Michael Ausiello’s recent scoop that, “Nimoy’s character’s arc was significantly cut back to accommodate Nimoy, who was only interested in doing a handful of episodes.”

FRINGE Recap: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

April 8th, 2009

fringe_olivia

The Good: With the mysterious serial killer known only as “the Artist” providing FRINGE fanatics with genuine Silence of the Lambs inspired fears, and Olivia Dunham’s emotional connection to a mysterious folic-ally challenged child delivering the tears, last night’s installment of FRINGE was far and away our favorite episode of the series thus far.

The Bad: Josh Jackson’s Peter Bishop was relegated to mere comic relief, adding virtually nothing to the episode outside of the occasional eye-brow raise and off-the-cuff one liner in reaction to Walter’s antics. That, and the decision to cast Erik Palladino as the child welfare case worker/CIA operative took away from the suspense a bit — because let’s face it, there is no way the actor best known (at least to this TV Addict) as the smarmy Dr. Dave Malucci on ER was going to be playing a nice guy.

The Ugly: The fact that many fans missed a killer of an ending as a result of AMERICAN IDOL running nine minutes long (see video after the jump.)

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The remaining eight contestants perform songs from the year they were born. Interesting fact: At least one of them reportedly has naked pics floating around on the web. On your marks… get set… Google!

FRINGE (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Serial killer, creepy kids, dancing Walter…. we can’t wait!

90210 (9PM CW, Global in Canada)
Jason Priestly… directed this outing, which pretty much revolves around Silver and the fallout from that whole video mess that unfolded in the last episode.

CUPID (10PM ABC)
I ain’t gonna lie: I went into this show last week hating it. Call it THE LOVE BOAT syndrome, but by the end of the pilot, I’d been lulled into a state of somnambulistic-like bliss that left me… well, not exactly eager for more, per se, but somehow not opposed to the idea.

FRINGE Returns Tonight, Here’s Why You Should Too

April 7th, 2009

FYI: This post isn’t simply another excuse to share our photo with J.J. Abrams from September’s FRINGE premiere party in New York City!

A Ph.D in FRINGE-ology is NOT a prerequisite for enjoying this show
Now we know what you’re thinking: Does not having a name like J.J. Abrams above the title virtually mean that if you haven’t watched every single frame of every single episode (twice!) you will be well, lost. Well, think of FRINGE as the anti-LOST, with virtually every episode featuring a self-contained mystery that will almost always be solved by episodes end courtesy of a brilliant (and some might say crazy) team of FBI investigators lead by Olivia Dunham, the father-son duo of Walter and Peter Bishop and the painfully underutilized Astrid Farnsworth.

Oh and on the off chance you do happen to be confused by the mythology sprinkled in (or as J.J. Abrams likes to call it, “the icing on the cake”) that mentions a “pattern,” an “observer” and the mysterious “William Bell.” Please take solace in the fact that like all good series’ —you’re not alone. We’ve been watching from day one and remain just as confused as the next observer.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 10, 2009

February 10th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SCRUBS (9PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Turk and Carla make a big announcement, which much to our chagrin probably does not include the words, “We’re sticking around Sacred Heart for a ninth season.”

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
By golly we’ve got it, the world’s worst drinking game. Take a shot every-time Astrid (the adorable Jasika Nicole) gets an actual line! But seriously folks, do not miss what Executive Producer Jeff Pinkner calls “a total game changer” of an episode.

90210 (8PM CW, 9PM Global in Canada)
Annie’s jealousy of Rhonda starts to wear on Ethan. Which is odd, because one would think Ethan would find Annie’s incessant smiling far more annoying.

PRIVILEGED (8PM CW, 8PM CityTV in Canada)
LIPSTICK JUNGLE’s Kirby (Robert Buckley) drops by PRIVILEGED. Which means by our calculations, PRIVILEGED fans best be starting their “Save Our Show” Campaign in 3… 2… 1..

New York Comic Con 2009: Unlocking the Mystery that is FRINGE

February 10th, 2009

fringe comic con

After saving the Mighty Ducks from the jaws of defeat on more than one occasion it should come as no surprise that it was up to the quick-witted and hilarious Josh Jackson to save the cast of FRINGE from what could have been a painfully awkward Comic Con panel thanks to some wonky microphones and one seriously inexperienced moderator. The following are some of the highlights:

Mistaken Identity
According to our calculations, it took less than a minute into the FRINGE panel for some fan to yell out “Mighty Ducks!” Re-enforcing our belief that the artist formerly known as Pacey Whitter to some will have to live with the fact that “Triple-deke” may very-well be etched on his tombstone. Well, that or “Quack, Quack, Quack.”

Josh Jackson: He’s just like us!
And by “just like us” we naturally mean that Josh Jackson outed himself as a massive fanboy. “I’m such a nerd, I’m an actor with a flow chart,” said Jackson, who it turns out uses his very own flow chart to keep track of FRINGE’s ever-expanding and increasingly complex mythology.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 3, 2009

February 3rd, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Hurray for Hollywood! Finally!

90210 (8PM CW, 9PM Global in Canada)
It’s time for Adriana to tell a few people she’s got a bun in the oven… including her fellow baker. Meanwhile, Annie’s feeling threatened by Ethan’s relationship with another gal, and Dixon finally gets Silver to open up. (Not like that, you pervs!) Wait… um, hello, why is there no mention of Brenda or Kelly? Do these people not know where their money is???

SCRUBS (9PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
What’s this? The potential of an unholy alliance between Cox and Kelso? Isn’t that a sign of the apocalypse? Somebody get the Winchester brothers on the line, STAT!

PRIVILEGED (9PM CW, 8PM CityTV in Canada)
Charlie finally man’s up and tells Megan how he feels. Of course, it true wuss fashion he does it has he’s about to leave for school in California. And it’s good news/bad news for Sage. On the plus side, she doesn’t have to worry that Luis will frown on her virginity. On the down side, he’s a big ol’ Jesus boy, which means she’ll probably stay that way for a while.

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Remember that plane full of dead people that kicked this series off? Tonight, there’s another plane-related disaster. Could they be connected? I don’t know, but look at those tricky folks at the aptly named FOX, starting this at 9:01 in the hope that having missed the first minute of everything else on the airwaves, we’ll stay tuned.

SCRUBS (9:30PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Another new episode? Um, ABC, you do know that sweeps has been moved to March, right? Why do I get the feeling you’re gonna be stuck with nothing to air except GEORGE LOPEZ reruns?
