Ji Whiz: Chef Says “To Hell’s Kitchen With It!”

January 29th, 2009

When the fifth season of FOX’s HELL’S KITCHEN kicks off tonight, keep your eye on Chef Ji. Even in casual conversation, you can tell that the native New Yorker – who’s cooked side by side with everyone from Emeril Lagasse to Julia Child – is as cool, calm and collected as Gordon Ramsay is hot-tempered. So if any of the wannabes is gonna be able to turn out a dish that wows even Johnny Anger Management, it’s her. Here, she shares with theTVAddict.com her first impressions of the human Ginsu.

When you auditioned for the show, had you already seen it??
Chef Ji:
Yeah, I had seen season 1, and then I watched season 4 because I wanted to see a friend of mine [Lou Ross] on it.

Huh. And you still went up for it. Masochistic much?
(Laughs) Hell, yeah! But it wasn’t that I wanted to be subjected to pain or humiliation. I just wanted to kick ass and get the prize! And on top of that, my drive is still to become successful in the culinary world, and to prove to myself and my father that I’m hot s— in the kitchen.

So what was your reaction upon finding out that you’d made the cut? “Oh crap, now I really have to DO this!”?
At first, I was shocked, and when I get shocked, I’m usually speechless. But when I called my boyfriend and told him the news, I was jumping up and down and nearly tripped. I couldn’t believe it. I was so excited.

What was your first impression of Ramsay?
“Oh man, here he comes! Chef Hell himself… bring it on!” But at the same time, I have a great respect for Chef Ramsay. He has great, hardcore presence, and he knows his [stuff].

Review: LIE TO ME

January 21st, 2009

lie to me cast fox

If there’s one thing that we learned after watching the season premiere of FOX’s new series LIE TO ME, it’s that “the truth is written all over our faces.” Which is why, we’re not going to lie to you .

On the surface, LIE TO ME brings very little new to the table.

In the now all-too-familiar tradition of THE MENTALIST, HOUSE and MONK, LIE TO ME takes a cantankerous yet brilliant expert, Dr. Cal Lightman (solidly portrayed by Tim Roth) and surrounds him with the standard mix of beautiful and brainy team members. In this case, that includes the upbeat Dr. Gillian Foster (THE PRACTICE’s Kelli Williams playing Cuddy to Roth’s House), research assistant and obvious comic relief Eli Loker (TERMINATOR’s Brendan Hines) and newcomer Ria Torres (Monica Raymund).

Exclusive Interview: Kiefer Sutherland Talks 24 Season 7

January 7th, 2009

The TV Addict with Kiefer Sutherland at the
24 Season Premiere Party, January 2008

If there is one thing that this TV Addict took away following two days holed up with a bunch of rowdy radio shock jocks is that DJ’s love to talk. Thus, you can imagine my surprise when an eery quiet enveloped Hollywood’s Hotel Palamor at the end of the second day of FOX’s January Press Junket. Turns out, Kiefer Sutherland was in the house. And if six seasons of the hit FOX show 24 taught this TV Addict anything, it’s that when Jack Bauer talks, you best be listening. Or risk ending up like this guy.

So listen I did. As Kiefer Sutherland was kind enough to take a few minutes out of his busy schedule to reveal what went wrong with season six, why the new season of 24 is the best one yet and when fans can expect to see Jack Bauer’s adventure continue on the big screen.

So it’s been like what, five years since you’ve been on the air?
Kiefer Sutherland: It feels like it, it really does [TV Addict Note: At this point, Kiefer laughs. Which was quite a sight to see considering that I'm fairly confident that Jack Bauer has barely cracked a smile over the course of 24's six seasons!] Believe me, it’s been a really disappointing time for us. Our fans have been so unbelievably loyal to us. But unfortunately there were a series of events that conspired to keep us off the air. And since it is really important to run all 24 hours continuously the decision was made to hold us off for another year so that we could premiere in January.

Did all the extra time you were afforded help or hurt the show?
We tried to take advantage of all the extra time we had this season and I do believe that now that we’ve done all 24 episodes, they’re finished and I’ve seen them I can confidently say that we’ve made the best season we’ve ever made. I hope people come back to watch it though. To say that we’re not nervous a little would be bullsh*t. Beacuse we are.

We Give FOX its Mid-Season Report Card

December 18th, 2008

THE GOOD: Afters years of being shuffled around the schedule, BONES has settled nicely into its Wednesday night time-slot to become one of the evening’s highest rated shows. After shifting the focus to Walter (our new favorite mad scientist), FRINGE survived a shaky start to their season to finish off the year strongly. While THE SIMPSONS and FAMILY GUY continue to provide for consistent laughter on Sundays.

THE BAD: Unfortunately, the laughter stops after FAMILY GUY. I mean literally, we really don’t find AMERICAN DAD the least bit funny (and lord knows we’ve given it a fair shot!). Stellar seasons from both TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and PRISON BREAK have gotten buried under what has become the most competitive night of the week. Viewers not surprisingly checked out of the Jerry O’Connell hotel ‘laugher’ DO NOT DISTURB. And quick, we challenge you to name one show on FOX that you watch between Thursday and Saturday.

THE FUTURE: Looks about as unstoppable as Shirley Manson’s Catherine Weaver, as FOX gets ready to unleash its perennial midseason juggernaut AMERICAN IDOL on to a salivating public. A show that not only still owns the highly coveted 18-49 demographic, but more importantly serves as a launching pad to promote exciting mid-season entires like the return of 24, Joss Whedon’s DOLLHOUSE and the Tim Roth vehicle, LIE TO ME. All that plus fans will finally have a reason to turn to FOX between Thursday and Saturday with BONES moving to Thursday night at 8PM and Friday night culminating in a nerd orgasm for SciFi fans with TERMINATOR at 8PM, DOLLHOUSE at 9PM and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA at 10PM (on SciFi, Space in Canada)

THE GRADE: B+

The Usual Suspects: Choose Season Seven’s Ultimate 24 Baddie

November 24th, 2008

On our recent visit to the set of 24, actress Cherry Jones (President Allison Taylor) let it slip that the big joke among the cast when shooting a scene is that, “whoever gets the last look is the mole (read: bad guy).”

Which is why this TV Addict couldn’t help but wonder, as the camera lingered on certain cast members just enough for the audience to register the obligatory “shifty eyes,” who will be the seventh season’s ultimate baddie when 24 returns in January?

Here’s our take on the suspects (left to right). As per usual, feel free to add yours in the comments below.

Can 24 Be Redeemed with TV Movie?

November 21st, 2008

24 redemption
By Melissa Girimonte

24 has quite a bit to atone for. It’s been 18 months since the end of its lackluster sixth season. Filming Season seven hit roadblock after roadblock, from scrapped storylines, to California wildfires, to the infamous WGA strike. Will fans welcome back the action series, and their hero, Jack Bauer? If the upcoming two-hour TV movie is any indication of what’s in store. Absolutely.

24: REDEMPTION sets the ball in motion for its long awaited seventh season premiere by filling in the gaps following Jack’s triumphant walk off into the sunset at the end of season six. A female president is about to be sworn in, war is about to break out in the fictional African country of Sangala and Jack Bauer is desperately trying to escape his past.

DOLLHOUSE: Or How the TV Addict Stopped Worrying About a Friday Night Timeslot

November 19th, 2008

dollhouse cast

Despite naysayers who fear FOX has dumped Joss Whedon’s latest series into a show-killing Friday night timeslot, this TV Addict believes the move may be the best thing to have happened to DOLLHOUSE since star Eliza Dushku’s parents procreated.

Crazy? Perhaps. But hear me out.

Now granted, Fridays on FOX don’t historically have the best track-record (see: FIREFLY, DARK ANGEL, VANISHED… ). But a lot has changed since the ill-fated launch of FIREFLY, Whedon’s space saga, in the fall of 2002, including what network execs expect of a new show. Thanks to television’s increasingly-fragmented audience, the rise of numerous cable channels, increased awareness of non-conventional viewers (who watch via DVR or even outlets such as Hulu.com), networks have been forced to accept that numbers which may have put a show on death row only a few short years ago are now greeted with lively cheers.

Just ask GOSSIP GIRL, whose deafening buzz hasn’t exactly translated into big numbers. Or Josh Freidman, creator of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, whose show has avoided being axed despite the fact that the heroine shoots more bullets in an average episode than the series has viewers.

FOX Announces 2008-2009 Midseason Schedule

November 6th, 2008

Change we can believe in. Not when it comes to FOX’s just released 2008-2009 midseason schedule.

For every bit of good news, like the highly anticipated return of 24 (January 11), the series premiere of the intriguing new Tim Roth vehicle LIE TO ME (January 21) and FRINGE scaring up the coveted post-IDOL time-slot (January 20). There is an equal amount of bad news. Namely the relegation of Joss Whedon’s DOLLHOUSE and TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES to Fridays, the inconspicuous absence of PRISON BREAK and THE CLEVELAND SHOW, not to mention the moving of consistent time-slot winner BONES to the ‘coveted’ Thursday at 8PM slot.

Trends We’d Like to See More of: FRINGE’s Shortened Commercial Breaks

September 17th, 2008

Since this TV Addict is always quick to criticize the Network suits when they make decisions I think for, lack of a better word, are boneheaded. I thought it would only be fair to take a moment and applaud the Proverbial Powers that Be when they do something right.

Say what you will about FOX’s FRINGE, but I think the one thing we can all agree on is how much we’re loving their shortened commercial breaks. Not only does the brief message touting that FRINGE will return in 60 and/or 90 seconds keep this TV Addict from pressing fast-forward on my PVR. I actually find myself watching the high definition movie trailers and incredibly unfunny yet oddly enthralling Jerry Seinfeld/Bill Gates Microsoft ads that follow.

Here’s hoping ABC, CBS, NBC and the CW are taking notes. Because FOX’s ingenious marketing gimmick actually has this TV Addict doing something I haven’t done in quite a long time — putting down my remote.
