ELI STONE Rewards Us For Keeping the Faith

October 15th, 2008

Unlike many of the this TV Addict’s favorite returning fall shows, last night’s season premiere of ELI STONE did not disappoint. And not just because episode writers Leila Gerstein and Alex Taub managed to give ALIAS fans a SpyDaddy Jack Bristow shout by naming the bank in which Jordan Weathersby found himself trapped in ‘Credit Dauphine.’

Rather, ELI STONE succeeded because it surprised us by definitively answering the one question viewers have been pondering all summer long [What's the deal with Eli?], delivered an opening dance number that would make any fan of time-slot lead in DANCING WITH THE STARS proud [Here's hoping DWTS fans stuck around!] and most importantly, managed to catapult the show in a completely new and exciting direction.

But first off, let’s deal with the surprise. It turns out that Eli’s therapist played by Sigourney Weaver was in fact a messenger sent from God. And while the “Special Guest Star” billing probably should have been a tip off, this TV Addict honestly didn’t see it coming. For showrunners Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim to make Eli’s path so clear so early in the show’s run is pretty much unheard of. Does TV 101 not dictate at minimum, another two seasons of is-he-or-isn’t-he a conduit from God Questions?

Apparently not.

Tonight’s TV Addict Must Watch: ELI STONE

October 14th, 2008

eli stone cast

This TV Addict has faith. Faith that you will keep the pledge that you made last spring [did you really think I'd forget?] and tune into tonight’s season premiere of ELI STONE. The show that EW.com proudly proclaimed is, “Warm… charming… under-appreciated… and fit to practice.” And this TV Addict called last season’s best new show that you didn’t watch.

First Look Video: Katie Holmes on ELI STONE

October 9th, 2008

While this TV Addict generally eschews shameless stunt casting [see Britney Spears on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER], we can’t ignore the fact that it often gets results [again, see Britney Spears on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER]. So with that in mind, theTVaddict.com is thrilled to present a first look at Mrs. Tom Cruise in action. We can only hope that she does for ELI STONE what Britney did for HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.

Catching up with ELI STONE on DVD

September 6th, 2008

Imagine for a moment that you woke up one morning only to discover that you had an inoperable brain aneurysm giving you the power to see the future. Would you stick to the status quo by continuing your work as a high-powered attorney that specializes in defending corporate behemoths? Or decide to make some serious life altering changes?

Luckily for us, San Francisco lawyer Eli Stone chose the latter. Setting off a spectacular series of events that quietly added up to last season’s most under-appreciated new series. Co-created by EVERWOOD’s Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, ELI STONE chronicles the ups [he's a successful lawyer engaged to Natasha Henstridge!] and downs [he's plagued with bizarre hallucinations!] of our titular hero as he begins to suspect that his George Michael inspired visions may be more than what they seem.

First Look: Katie Holmes on ELI STONE

August 4th, 2008

Even though this TV Addict generally eschews shameless celebrity stunt casting, or as I now like to call it “The Britney Effect.” I’m excited to offer up a first look at Katie Holmes on ELI STONE for two reasons.

For one, ELI STONE was the best show you didn’t watch last season. And two, co-creator Greg Berlanti gets points for honesty, by openly admitting at the recent Television Critics Association press tour that he had to beg Holmes to do the role because, “we really wanted to bring eyeballs to the show.”

Good News, Bad News: Katie Holmes, Amy Poehler, THE SHIELD and Hayden Panettiere

July 16th, 2008

Good News: ELI STONE should get a much needed ratings boost when it returns to TV this fall. Bad News: Courtesy of Mrs. Tom Cruise Katie Holmes. Or as I like to call her, the artist formerly known as Joey Potter. Who is said to be reuniting with DAWSON’S CREEK executive producer and ELI STONE co-creator Greg Berlanti for a one-off guest appearance this fall. Or as this TV Addict is now calling it: “A Britney” [Source]

Good News: The hilarious and radiant Amy Poehler is rumoured to be in top-secret negotiations to head up the highly anticipated and incredibly secretive spin-off of THE OFFICE. Bad News: Which means, if it’s possible, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE just became even less funny. [Source]

Good News: At yesterday’s Television Critics Association Press Tour, THE SHIELD creative team and cast promise a more satisfying ending than THE SOPRANOS. Bad News: THE SHIELD is ending. [Source]

Good News: Hayden Panettiere returns to the small screen. Bad News: With a music video. [Source]

2008 UpFront Buzz: 90210, BACK TO YOU, ALIENS IN AMERICA & ELI STONE

May 10th, 2008

Since it’s way too too nice to be inside today in the TV Addict’s beautiful hometown of Toronto Canada, I’m going to make this quick. Ready… set… blog…

elly taylor jennie garth 90210 Michael Ausiello is reporting that the original bad-girl-turned-good Jennie Garth will be returning to the show that made her famous, signing on to BEVERLY HILLS 90210 Version 2.0 [this show really needs an official title] in a recurring capacity as get this — West Bev’s Guidance Counsellor. And while this TV Addict is thrilled with the news, surely I’m not the only one who finds it hard to believe that Kelly Taylor — the original Queen Bee of Beverly Hills high — is living the life she’s accustom to on a guidance counsellor salary. Unless of course she married rich. Hmmm…. Dylan McKay cameo anyone?

Two rare gems on television, smart shows that actually make this TV Addict laugh — ALIENS IN AMERICA and BACK TO YOU are both said to be on the chopping block this week. And while ALIENS axe comes as no surprise considering the CW put about $5 into marketing the show. BACK TO YOU’s sudden cancellation is quite the shock and disappointment. Especially since FOX is renewing ‘TIL DEATH [as in, what I wish for when when I'm watching the show] for a third season. Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton deserve a far better fate than this and if it helps make my argument, the epicenter of cultural cool [Entertainment Weekly] agrees.

Random Musings: SMALLVILLE, 30 ROCK and ELI STONE

April 18th, 2008

Talk about a bad week to be a child actor. Monday THE BIG BANG THEORY’s Asian Doogie Howser trades in his status as ‘the next Bill Gates” for a date with a girl. Then on BACK TO YOU, Kelly and Chuck’s daughter gets re-cast when the producers decide to ‘go in a different direction’ and finally SMALLVILLE’s Lex Luthor puts an end to Mini-Lex by tossing him in a roaring fire. Ouch!

And speaking of SMALLVILLE. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that after waiting the better part of seven seasons for Lex to finally go to the dark side, he’s being quickly written off the show due to Michael Rosenbaum’s real-life wishes to only return to the series part-time next season. Talk about a letdown of super proportions.

Pledge Your Support for ELI STONE

April 17th, 2008

eli stone

In this era of evil mega-corporations, greed and corruption, one man sticks up for the little guy. That man is Eli Stone and over the course of twelve episodes, he’s risked everything — his career, personal life and reputation to defend those who need most.

But tonight, Eli Stone desperately needs YOUR help. Thanks to mediocre ratings, television’s best new show of 2008 finds itself on the proverbial bubble. So much so that executive producer Greg Berlanti sent out this message [courtesy of E!Online]:
