Morning Static: SOUTHLAND, V, DOLLHOUSE & More!

August 27th, 2009

Welcome to our morning round-up of big/interesting TV news that you may have missed over the past 24 hours because unlike us, there’s a fairly good chance that have a life outside of the small screen.

Good News: NBC’s SOUTHLAND won’t get lost in the avalanche of Friday premieres which include the splashy re-launches of MEDIUM and DOLLHOUSE. Bad News: Instead, it will just get lost, with the Peacock network pushing the sophomore series premiere date back a month to Friday October 23. [Variety]

Good News: A GILMORE GIRL grad will be joining ABC’s HANK on a recurring basis. Bad News: Said grad is not Alexis Bledel, rather it’s SAMANTHA WHO? survivor Melissa McCarthy, who has signed on to play sister-in-law to Kelsey Grammer’s Hank. [EW]

Good News: Warner Bros Television swears that the two-week temporary shutdown of ABC’s much-buzzed about V, “was put in place so that the writers would have time to beef up future scripts and bring them in line with the quality of the pilot.” Bad News: But just in case, who wants to be in charge of reserving saveV.com? Anyone? [TheWrap]

Good News: Summer Glau is officially joining the DOLLHOUSE for a mult-episode arc that will have Glau playing a character named Bennett who shares a past with Eliza Dushku’s Echo. Bad News: RIP TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. [Dollverse]

Joss Whedon Previews DOLLHOUSE Season 2

August 20th, 2009

“We just wanted something extraordinary.”

Those are the words creator Joss Whedon used to sum up what the DOLLHOUSE team set out to do in the season’s thirteenth episode “Epitaph One which was just recently released exclusively on DVD and on iTunes.

Now comes the tricky part: What exactly does one do for an encore after the series virtually everyone had written off gets a renewal so unexpected that Whedon called it “the biggest surprise of my career”… and you’ve already revealed how it’s all going to end.

“Had I known episode thirteen wouldn’t be our last, would I have done something different?” he pondered during our recent chat with him. “Maybe. Because we really did tease out a lot. But I didn’t think we were necessarily done, I just thought the best thing we could do is just take a baseball bat, swing as hard as we can and leave nothing to for the ride back, because who knows?”

That said, Wheton assures us that, “What happens next is really exciting.”

Morning Static: GOSSIP GIRL, TRUE BLOOD, CAPRICA & More!

August 19th, 2009

Welcome to our new morning round-up of big/interesting TV news that you may have missed over the past 24 hours because unlike us, there’s a fairly good chance that have a life outside of the small screen.

After two seasons GOSSIP GIRL’s Vanessa Abrams [Jessica Szohr] finally justifies her existence and bringing something to the table. That something — her TV mom Gabriela Abrams — who will be played by the phenomenal ALIAS/ FIREFLY alum Gina Torres [TVGuide]

In what we can only hope is some sort of friendly rivalry with Joss Whedon — who recently made headlines by snagging BATTLESTAR GALACTICA alum Jamie Bamber and Michael Hogan for his DOLLHOUSE — executive producer Jane Espenson has signed James Marsters to a sizable CAPRICA arc where he’ll play a dangerous terrorist leader by the name of Barnabus Greeley. Joss, it’s your move (Hint: Tricia Helfer would make an awesome doll!) [EW]

Sunday’s installment of TRUE BLOOD sucked in a record 4.5 million viewers. Further evidence that if you built it — ‘it’ being great television, even in the summer — viewers will come. How long until the big 5 networks get the message? [THR Live Feed]

Countdown to Fall: DOLLHOUSE

August 18th, 2009

dollhouse_cast

When asked to describe the thought process behind his universally adored thirteenth episode of DOLLHOUSE, Joss Whedon simply said, “We took a baseball bat, swung as hard as we could and left nothing for the ride back because who knew?” Unfortunately, the one thing we do know is that nothing in the world of television ever works out as initially planned (just ask fans of FIREFLY fans). Which is why the auteur (alongside a team of talented writers) now finds themselves summer vacation-less and entrenched in a writer’s room — all in an effort to live up to the (Spoiler Alert!) mind-blowing post-apocalyptic world that was set up in “Epitaph One.” Thankfully, Team Whedon has a plan. Step one, don’t presume what you’ve seen [in the thirteenth episode] is necessarily the whole truth (”Every flashback answers something about where people are heading but brings up a lot more questions about where they end up or how they got there,” teased Whedon to EW.com) Step two, enjoy the ride. Especially now that Whedon is perfectly at home on Friday nights (Joked the writer, “There are no expectations! They [FOX] gives me a note, I say, ‘Nobody’s watching! So I don’t have to do this right?’”) and is no longer afraid to call on a little help from his [really cool] friends. “Last year I was careful that the show didn’t seem like it was a party for my friends,” said Whedon in a recent interview with theTVaddict.com. “But looking at those people at the Con today [referring to the San Diego Comic Con] I realized it is a party for my friends, these are my friends.” Which means come season two, fans can expect special guest stars galore! Including a bevy of fan/genre favorites including Jamie Bamber, Felicia Day, Summer Glau and Michael Hogan.

DOLLHOUSE returns to FOX on Friday September 25th at 9PM (Global TV in Canada)

Win DOLLHOUSE Season One on Blu-ray

August 12th, 2009

This TV Addict is not gonna lie. Based entirely on the jaw-dropping awesomeness that was DOLLHOUSE’s unaired-and-only-available-on-DVD thirteenth episode “Epitaph One,” there was a tiny selfish part of me that wanted so desperately to keep this baby for myself.

But with today’s news (courtesy of @moryan) that the must-see-it-to-believe-it-game-changer-of-an-episode is now available as a standalone download on iTunes, the need to hoard Joss Whedon’s Eliza Dushku vehicle for myself has almost all but dissipated. Even though we have a feeling Dushku and the rest of the ‘dolls’ in glorious 1080p ain’t too shabby.

Comic Con Recap: Joss Whedon Talks DOLLHOUSE, DR. HORRIBLE and Why Corporations and Governments are Trying to Control Your Mind!

July 24th, 2009

Move over Kevin Smith, there’s a new man who we’d like to see take his ridiculously entertaining schtick of self-depracation and hilarity on the road. His name: Joss Whedon. As you’ll quickly see from our recap of his Q&A direct from San Diego Comic Con 2009.

On the future of Victor
Joss Whedon: Spoiler Alert! Victor might get better, quickly.

On where the idea came to cast the hilarious Alan Tyduk as a villain?
I’ve met him. He’s an extraordinarily versatile actor and has actually got a fighting streak in him that you won’t see in Wash or in 28 days… no, which is the one without Sandra Bullock?

One what he’s reading for inspiration.
Wired Magazine is pretty much all I read and have time for. I’m reading Julie & Julia but haven’t come up with a lot for the show. We’ll save Eliza saying “bon appetite!” for sweeps.

Nathan Fillion Talks CASTLE, DOLLHOUSE & DR. HORRIBLE

May 11th, 2009

nathan_fillion_castle

Rule #1 of successful television blogging: Never turn down an opportunity to interview Nathan Fillion, even when said interview inexplicably lands in your lap giving you quite literally less than two minutes to prepare. Rule #2: Be Canadian. Or at the very least, throw in the occasional “aboot” or “Eh!” into the conversation so that the Canadian born actor — who was doing one final promotional push on Friday to promote tonight’s season finale of CASTLE — will cut you a little slack upon learning that you aren’t nearly as prepared for the interview as you should be. Joked Fillion (we hope!), “I’m far more forgiving when it comes to Canadians.”

There have been a lot of rumors swirling about CASTLE’s chances for renewal, what have you heard?
Nathan Fillion: I find out for a fact on Friday whether the show is coming back or not.

I find it hard to believe that Nathan Fillion doesn’t have any insider information!
Everyone finds out a week from today. There is no insider information and it has been difficult because there was a big delay with the ratings. We’re all waiting.

With the show’s fate hanging in the balance, are you paying extra close attention to ratings?
I’ve got a dedicated team of people that scour the internet for information such as this. They’re known as my family; My brother, mother and father. They are my team, my google alert if you will.

Ask the Addict: PRISON BREAK, GOSSIP GIRL, HIMYM, FRINGE & More!

May 11th, 2009

michael_sara_prison_break

While I’m not ready to see PRISON BREAK come to an end this Friday, I am ready to find out what goes down. Please tell me that my favorite band of [prison] breakers do not end up right back where they started (read: prison) — LincLover
The TV Addict: If I were to tell you that your favorite band of [prison] breakers don’t end up right back where they started…. well, I’d be lying. Because the fact of the matter is, at least one of your favorite Fox River inmates does in fact return from whence he came. But before you start to put your very own Michael Scofield strategy in motion in an effort to break he-or-they-who-shall-not-be-named out of prison (again!), you should probably take solace in the fact that things could end up a lot worse. After-all, Friday’s finale does offer up its fair share of shocking deaths, which we’re fairly certain is a far worse fate than five-to-ten in Fox River, right?

So excited to meet young Lily Rhodes on tonight’s GOSSIP GIRL flashback, any scoop on the episode? — Stuckinthe80s
The TV Addict: First, the bad news. With half the episode dedicated to GOSSIP GIRL’s modern day prom (more on that later), we didn’t get to spend nearly as much time in the 80’s as this TV Addict would have liked. That said, the good news is that fans of VERONICA MARS will be right at home in Lily’s world; With the episode not only opening with a nice, albeit possibly very unintentional shout-out to Neptune, but very exciting performances courtesy of MARS alum Krysten Ritter (playing Lily’s sister Carol Rhodes) and Ryan Hansen (playing the object of Ritter’s affection). With the even better news being that Lily’s story is most definitely compelling enough to have us asking, “What happens next?” and as an added bonus, the supportive sister vibe between Brittany Snow’s Lily and Krysten Ritter’s Carol may just be the ideal PRIVILEGED replacement should Sage and Rose not see a second season.

Any news on where Max and Casey are headed on GREEK? I’m worried! — TeamCappie
The TV Addict: You should be, because on tonight’s episode Max is made an offer he can’t refuse, putting the opposite attraction that is Max and Casey on hold for at least a month.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: May 8, 2009

May 8th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
DOLLHOUSE (9PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Just as DOLLHOUSE starts to get really interesting, along comes the first season finale; Putting a swift end to Ballard’s investigation, Alpha’s obsession with Echo and worst of all, one of the Actives — who as it turns out — is about to become de-active, and fast. Gulp!

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER (10PM HBO)
How does Seth MacFarlane, television’s most prolific writer/ producer/ voice artist/ millionaire playboy/ hulu pitchman unwind at the end of a busy week? By sitting down with Bill Maher to promote FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD and THE CLEVELAND SHOW of course.

NEW & NOTABLE:
HAPPY FEET (8PM ABC)
Or as we like to call it, the worst Best Animated Feature Oscar winner EVER.
