Good News, Bad News: KINGS, the CW & Jay Leno

April 7th, 2009

Good News: NBC has committed to airing the remaining eight episodes of KINGS first (and most likely only) season. Bad News: On Saturday night, with the peacock network announcing today that due to disappointing ratings, the series will be replaced by yet another installment of DATELINE. [Source]

Good News: Yesterday, network president Dawn Ostroff announced that for the first time, the CW will launch original programming during the summer months. Bad News: Rather than take a page from the early days of FOX’s playbook that had the fledgling network make a name for themselves by airing original episodes of BEVERLY HILLS 90210 in the summer up against virtually zero competition, the CW will be offering up two pointless reality TV shows that nobody will watch. [Source]

Good News: In a valiant effort to differentiate his new 10PM talk show set to premiere this fall, Jay Leno has revealed that he’ll lose his trademark couch and desk. Bad News: Yet still keep the same old tired OJ jokes he’s been treading out for over a decade now. [Source]

Breaking News: The CW Renews [Almost] Everything!

February 24th, 2009

That noise you just heard was the squee of three million or so SUPERNATURAL fangirls learning that their favorite Winchester brothers, alongside GOSSIP GIRL, ONE TREE HILL, 90210, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL and SMALLVILLE have all been given early renewals for next season by The CW.

“As we continue to build The CW Network as a destination for young women, these six shows have clearly contributed to strengthening our schedule and our brand identity,” said The CW president Dawn Ostroff in a statement released to the media. “By securing these signature hits for next season, we’re furthering our commitment to deliver high-quality, original programming to our viewers, advertisers and affiliates.”

Hey, CW: Who’d You Piss Off?

January 12th, 2009

So it appears someone at The CW — home of some of television’s most buzzed-about shows — did something to really tick off the folks over at TV Guide. Seems the print edition of that mag is no longer including listings for the born-of-WB network. Sure, you can find out what’s on such channels as ION (we don’t even know that that is!) but if you want to see if this week’s episode of GOSSIP GIRL is new or a rerun, you’re out of luck. Oh, wait, no you’re not. Fortunately, your friends here at theTVaddict.com absolutely love the CW network! So once again, we’re forced to ask the painful question: Why would you go anywhere else for info on your favorite shows?

We Give the CW its Mid-Season Report Card

December 17th, 2008

THE GOOD: Three hardworking remnants from the beloved WB era (SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL and ONE TREE HILL) proved you don’t need silly things like an actual marketing budget to be successful. While the gang from GOSSIP GIRL finally started to convert all of their highly-publicized off-screen buzz into on-screen ratings.

THE BAD: Sadly, the same can’t be said for the CW’s re-boot of 90210, which was plagued with a trifecta of troubles including uninspired story-telling, disappointing rating and their very own Canadian-diva-in-training (We’re so proud!). Also falling under the umbrella of bad news was the network’s failed attempt to translate some of Tyra’s TOP MODEL magic to their newest franchise hopeful STYLISTA and the entire Sunday Night experiment with M.R.C. (Media Rights Capital); which was quickly cancelled after the CW discovered that viewers were M.I.A.

THE FUTURE: Aside from REAPER returning on March 17 in the plum post-90210 timeslot, we’ve got nothing. Fruthermore, we have yet to meet a soul who is looking forward to, let alone heard of the network’s January reality TV/horror offering 13 FEAR IS REAL. And we’re still waiting for the network to show us they’ve got it in them to develop an entirely original new series that isn’t based on a re-boot of an already popular franchise (MELROSE PLACE), a spin-off (GOSSIP GIRL) or a series of popular teen-centric books.

November Sweeps Stunts: CW Edition

November 3rd, 2008

Perez Hilton Guests on PRIVILEGED

When it comes to pandering, McCain and Obama have nothing on the Big 5 Television Networks. Which is why theTVaddict.com will be spending the next few days highlighting some of the most blatant sweeps casting stunts since Britney appeared on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. First up the CW, complete with witty one-lines free of charge.

November 3: THE OC’s Willa Holland returns as Jenny’s bad influence on GOSSIP GIRL. In related gossip, Holland’s fictional TV sister Misha Barton is quietly segwaying into professional dog walking. Awkward.

November 4: 90210’s Harry and Debbie tell Annie and Dixon that their Grandmother is being written out of the show about Harry’s son who was given up for adoption.

November 4: Our favorite Nun Kathy Najimy guest stars as the twin’s hot-shot publicist on PRIVILEGED.

November 6: After discovering how not so super the unemployment line is, Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort) returns to SMALLVILLE.

The TV Addict Lends the CW Promotions Department a Hand

September 9th, 2008

Don’t get me wrong, the TV Addict loves the CW. But as we head into week two of the new fall season, we can’t help but notice that the little-network-that-could hasn’t really made much of an effort to remind fans that they’ve got other shows on the air. You know, besides 90210 and GOSSIP GIRL.

So as a public service announcement to fans of quality television everywhere, theTVaddict.com thought we’d help promote the rest of the CW’s schedule [ie. SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL, ONE TREE HILL, EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS, THE GAME and tonight's newest addition PRIVILEGED] by devising a slogan slogan the CW might wish to consider.

THE CW: MORE THAN JUST 90210 AND GOSSIP GIRL, NO REALLY.

Thoughts?

90210-Oh-Oh: Critics Being Left in the Dark

August 18th, 2008

90210 cast

This afternoon, theTVaddict.com received the following official statement from the CW.

“The CW and our studio partner CBS Paramount Network Television have made the strategic marketing decision not to screen “90210″ for any media in advance of its premiere.  We’re not hiding anything . . . simply keeping a lid on 90210 until 9.02, riding the curiosity and anticipation into premiere night, and letting all our constituents see it at the same time.”

Now, far be it from this TV Addict to start unsubstantiated rumors [after-all, isn't that what Entertainment Tonight is for?], but can this seriously be considered a positive sign for the show that’s supposed to be the CW’s last and best hope for survival?

TCA 2008: CW President Dawn Ostroff Talks

July 21st, 2008

By: Kevin Kelly, Special TCA Correspondent

President Dawn Ostroff kicked off Saturday’s Television Critics Press Tour CW executive panel by introducing us to an entirely new reality show called 13 – FEAR IS REAL [or as we at theTVaddict.com like to call it, the cancelled EVERWOOD, VERONICA MARS and JACK & BOBBY for this!] They’re pitching it as “THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT as a reality show.” Aye carumba. This was interesting when it was called SAW, or SAW 2, or SAW 3, or SAW 4. A mysterious computer-distorted voice comes on and lets us know that 13 contestants will be “Playing a game for me.” They’re “killed off,” one by one, and the final survivor wins. $66,666 dollars. Ostroff quipped, “We’ll do anything for attention here at The CW!” Funny, I really believe that.

Someone popped a hard hitting question wondering if Ostroff was worried about the economic downturn in the country having a negative affect on shows like 90210, PRIVILEGED, and GOSSIP GIRL, and she compared the current situation to the 1980s when shows like DYNASTY and DALLAS were doing well amidst a poor economy. I’m too young to remember if that was true or not, but they’d better hope that people retain a voracious appetite for the drunken antic of underaged rich kids.

The TV Addict Hangs with the Cast of ONE TREE HILL

May 19th, 2008

one tree hill cw upfront 2008

In anticipation of tonight’s ONE TREE HILL season finale, this TV Addict thought he’d post a few photos from my recent trip to the CW Up Front in New York City. Not surprisingly, unlike some of the more standoffish GOSSIP GIRL cast members, the denizens of Tree Hill were more than accommodating when it came to taking photos.

The TV Addict Meets Blake Lively

May 15th, 2008

blake lively

At yesterday’s CW Up Front, GOSSIP GIRL star Blake Lively could not have been more accommodating to the hundreds thousands of fans, reporters and media buyers wishing to pose with her. And yes, I know what you’re thinking, “Who needs Penn Badgley!?!”
