Channel Surfing: LAW & ORDER, I’M A CELEBRITY, THE BIG BANG THEORY & MORE!

June 3rd, 2009

C.T. offers up some random musings from around the dial…

Kudos to you, LAW & ORDER: SVU! About two minutes into the season finale, I was all set to write a piece on how Dick Wolf had made a rare misstep with annoying tech Dale Stuckey, who first appeared earlier this season. I even wanted to suggest that this fall’s season finale revolve around the geek’s murder. And then the show went and pulled the rug right out from under me by turning the guy into a psycho killer. And it was a blast (and a little hawt) to watch Olivia manhandle her sexy partner. But man, did the continuity department do a crappy job where the blood stains on Stabler’s shirt were concerned!

I’M A CELEBRITY’s Stephen Baldwin and the Pratt brats are giving religion the worst rap it’s had since the days of the inquisition. When even Janice Dickinson is disgusted by your behavior, it’s time for a little soul searching.

You’ve gotta love HARDBALL’s Chris Matthews if only because when folks refuse to give him a straight answer, he keeps asking again and again. He gets as frustrated as you and I would with someone’s BS but, unlike most people in his position,he actually calls people on their crap. And unlike Bill O’Reilly, who occasionally does the same thing, he doesn’t do it in a way that belittles or insults the person shoveling the crap.

Get ready for GOSSIP GIRL’s version of THAT 80’s show when Serena’s predicament causes Lily to flashback to her younger days.

The campus is abuzz about a new visiting professor played by Helen Slater. Well, duh, she’s SuperGIrl!

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
Barney thinks he can talk his way out of a speeding ticket, This we gotta see as you would not believe how often the boys in blue don’t consider rushing home to catch an episode of LOST as a valid excuse for going a wee bit over the speeding limit. Seriously, what is up with that!?

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Says @indybyteman, “THE BIG BANG THEORY is the most consistently funny show on TV. Geek centric without being condescending. And Penny rocks.” Adds @thetvaddict: Sure, Penny’s cool and all, but what’s up with her taste in men. First Leonard, and now tonight Stuart? I think you’d agree that she can do better.”

GREEK (8PM ABC Family)
Says @laiq, “Because it’s a great show.” Adds @thetvaddict: Agreed, and tonight’s episode which may-or-may-not have Max getting down on one knee, and Rebecca taking a walk on the wild side is no exception.

GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
Says @moviedo, “HEY, will watching GOSSIP GIRL ’cause I’m obsessed and because I fear Blair Waldorf will come after me if I don’t.”

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
Says @thetelevixen, “I’ll be watching HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, because a) it’s AWE-SOME and b) I’ve heard there’s going to be a HUGE surprise tonight!” Adds @thetvaddict: “AWE-SOME.” Don’t you mean LEGEN… wait for it… DARY?

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Just how funny is tonight’s installment of THE BIG BANG THEORY which this TV Addict had the pleasure of seeing at Paley Fest ‘09? Here’s all you need to know: Hookers! Hotels! and Howard (Wolowitz)

CHUCK (8PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
In the season 2 finale, yes NBC, you heard us correctly — SEASON finale — Chuck must spring into action on Ellie and Awesome’s wedding day to save his sister from evil Fulcrum forces and Steve Jobs wannabe Ted Roark (Chevy Chase).

GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) returns. Her mission: To liven up tonight’s been-there-done-that rivalry between Chuck and Nate for Blair’s affection.

HEROES (9PM NBC, 10PM Global in Canada)
It’s Nathan versus Sylar in this third season finale and we have a feeling that unlike season one, a parking meter isn’t gonna do Sylar in (or at least we hope it won’t.)

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Strap on your dancin’ shoes and get ready to boogie oogie oogie ’til ya just can’t boogie no more. That’s right, it’s disco night. I’ve avoided this show like the boil on the butt of humanity that it is, but even I am tempted to tune in tonight.

90210 (9PM CW, Global in Canada)
Donna and Kelly bond. I’m sure lots of supposedly interesting things happen to the “new generation” of Beverly Hills residents, but who cares. It’s Kelly and Donna, together again!

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Olivia witnesses a suicide… in her dreams, and it soon becomes apparent her nightmares could be connected to the ZFT manifesto. All of which would certainly mean a lot more to us if we remembered what exactly the ZFT manifesto was.

NEW & NOTABLE:
SAMANTHA WHO? (8PM ABC)
Who out there was asking for more of this show? (Anyone? Bueller?) Well, whoever you are, ABC heard and is responding with not just one but two new episodes airing back-to-back! (I’m going to guess they were so busy responding to your request that mine — that they not cancel SAMANTHA WHO — got lost in the shuffle. I hope you’re happy.)

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
CASTLE (10PM ABC)
The death of a socialite leads to Beckett attending a charity ball as Castle’s date. Talk about finding a way to turn a frown upside down!

CHUCK (8PM ABC)
Scott Bakula returns as Chuck’s dad, who finds himself in need of rescue. As if that weren’t enough, Chevy Chase also puts in an appearance and Morgan becomes a Buy More outcast.

GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
If Serena returns from Spain still moping about Dan, I will personally slap her. Hard. Meanwhile, Blair might just prove herself the self-sabotage queen when she makes a secret pact behind new beau Nate’s back. And expect mugging and eye-rolling galore when Dan winds up having to literally serve his rich peers.

NEW & NOTABLE:
THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS)
Yes, it’s a rerun, but it also offers valuable help in solving one of life’s biggest mysteries as Sheldon tries to figure out gift-giving etiquette.

Paley Festival Recap ‘09: THE BIG BANG THEORY

April 17th, 2009

paley_fest_big_bang_theory

Direct from the Paley Fest ‘09 in Hollywood comes the TV Addict’s report from the hilarious and heartwarming panel featuring the cast (Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar) and creators (Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady) of hit CBS show THE BIG BANG THEORY.

What’s in a name: Producer, co-creator Chuck Lorre revealed that the character names of Sheldon and Leonard were a “goofy homage… just a little fan thing of our own… a tip of the hat,” to pioneering film and television producer, actor and writer Sheldon Leonard.

It all started with: Sheldon, Leonard and a very hard partying dangerous girl who moved next door. [The original [working] title for THE BIG BANG THEORY was “Lenny, Penny and Kenny”] “We learned very quickly that the audience hated this girl [who would eventually evolve into Penny] because they were protective of these two guys. They were innocent with big open hearts and you simply couldn’t put a toxic girl next to them,” explained Chuck Lorre with regards to the initial pilot that didn’t make the cut. “But CBS did a nice thing and gave us another chance. The network recognized that even though we hadn’t got the writing right, that they had two stars in these two guys [Sheldon's Jim Parsons and Leonard's Johnny Galecki] and said, do it again.”

April 13th, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Ugly Betty’s first beau, Kevin Sussman decides to step up his game and romance Penny.

CHUCK (8PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
If CHUCK does get the ax, it certainly won’t be due to a lack of promotable guest stars. Tonight, Chuck looks to his double-crossing ex-girlfriend Jill (Jordana Brewster) to help rescue his father (Scott Bakula) who has been abducted by Fulcrum forces (Chevy Chase). Meanwhile, at the Buy More, the nerd herd tries to derail a corporate evaluation supervised by Emmett (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT’s Tony Hale)

GREEK (8PM ABC Family)
Casey wants Max and Cappie to get along, so she seeks advice from special guest star Janeane Garofalo. Who, you know, has a great track record at getting along with people (see: Bill O’Reilly)

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
Have you met Ted’s new intern? Well, you will tonight when he sets up his very own architectural firm in his apartment.

CASTLE (10PM ABC)
It’s the case of yet another killer with little-to-no imagination who quite literally takes a page from one of Castle’s best-selling books. This time, it’s a ritualistic killing that draws Beckett and Castle into the world of Vodun, a mysterious religion Castle researched for a previous book.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Considering tonight’s episode is called “The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition” we’d say there’s a 50/50 chance that the purported rivalry between Penny and the new girl in the building is not going to end well.

GREEK (8PM ABC Family)
After discovering that life doesn’t always work out like a Reese Witherspoon movie, Casey Cartwright returns to CRU after a summer in Washington with a renewed outlook towards academia. Yup, Casey’s hitting the books Rusty style.

CHUCK (8PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
When Chuck and Sarah’s complex relationship is exposed, a hot cold female cylon agent played by Tricia Helfer is assigned to evaluate Sarah’s performance, putting her life job in jeopardy.

GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
After years of wondering how on earth a seemingly unemployed musician can afford to send two kids to one of New York’s most prestigious private school, do the GOSSIP GIRL writers seriously expect us to buy tonight’s plot that has Rufus worrying about how he’s going to be able to afford to send Dan to Yale. Really?

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
Ted’s list of “things the gang’s too old to do” prompts Barney to attempt everything on the list within 24 hours to prove Ted wrong. Wait until he finds out that on the top of that list is “attempt everything on a random list within 24 hours to prove a point.”

Penny starts a hair-product business that suffers when her friends, particularly Sheldon, become involved.

GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
Assuming our teaser from earlier today was not enough of an incentive to get you to tune into tonight’s brand new installment of GOSSIP GIRL, we’ve got six words for you: Nelly Yuki in a fat suit!

CASTLE (10PM ABC)
Putting aside tonight’s investigation involving a dead young Nanny. Tonight’s real mystery is how on earth Castle and Beckett manage to get any work done amidst the incessant one-liners and flirtatious glances.
