At the recent Global TV UpFront, the TV Addict had the opportunity to sit front row for a brief Q&A with HEROES stars Masi Oka and Adrian Pasdar. Here’s what they had to say about being part of the surprise hit of the season.

What’s it like to be on a hit show where you can be killed off at anytime?
Adrian Pasdar: Why are you looking at me?
Masi Oka: You blew up [in the finale].
Adrian: It’s a little bit unsettling, having an expiration date. But after the first season, we all feel like if we have to go — as long as it helps the show move on — we have no problem moving forward.

Were you surprised at the negative reaction to May’s season finale?
Adrian: I just had this conversation with Tim Kring [HEROES creator]. It was a very expensive episode, with the real trick being how to get every character in the same spot for the final moments. I think we were going in a more emotional direction, whereas the fans expected something different.

Masi Oka: If fans want to see more special effects, thay have to buy more Nissan Versa’s. Next season it will be the Nissan Rogue.

How’s life changed since HEROES become a hit?
Adrian: Masi and I were in New York at around 8PM the night of the NBC UpFront. We thought it would be fun to duplicate the scene in the pilot where Hiro yells “Yatta!” in the middle of Time Square. Funnily enough, we couldn’t have been more invisible. He’s [Hiro's] spinning around, arms waving and this fellow walks up to us and asks if we could take a photo of him. The guy even corrected us on the angle! Totally oblivious to who we were. Of course two blocks later, fans see us and go nuts.

Masi Oka: At least Adrian can grow facial!

By: Steve Czarnecki (theTVaddict.com West Coast Correspondent)

The approach to Stage 7 on the Sunset-Gower studios was an anticipated one this past Thursday morning. I was here to cover a last minute press conference regarding the NBC television series HEROES! There were rumors that talks about Season 2 would be taking place and as a fan of the show and a TV journalist, it was too good to pass up. I headed to the large soundstage where along the way I passed a giant heaping of set props I found familiar, the most recognizable were giant metal letters spelling out the name of Claire’s cheerleading home; Union Wells High School and a sign that said KIRBY PLAZA, the location of the climactic season 1 finale. I checked in and immediately I realized something big was going on…something worldwide…the clue was a humongous globe shaped cake with 7 cities flagged on it. Taking a quick glance around it wasn’t hard to miss Isaac Mendez’s NYC rooftop set and a large number of Asian wooden carts, wicker looking baskets, heaps of bows and arrows in another area of the stage. I sat myself down and eagerly anticipated what was to come in the minutes ahead.

Before long Tim Kring the creator of this hit show took to the podium and was soon followed by the entire Season 1 main cast who stood silently behind, all looking rested, energetic and happy. He explained that six months ago before the show had really even developed a strong following that a trip with fellow producer Dennis Hammer to NATPE produced some overwhelming reaction from attendees ranging from network syndication buyers and corporate exhibitors. This hatched an idea which has now become the Nissan HEROES World Tour. What it entails basically is this; NBC is doing a worldwide promotional push for the August 28th release of HEROES on DVD and HD DVD and sending various members of the cast gallivanting across the globe (not the one made of cake) to as of now, at least 7 cities in 7 different countries to make media appearances, meet the fans, celebrate the show’s success and spread the word about Season 2. Nissan, who has been a corporate sponsor from HEROES inception, is the title sponsor behind this week long tour that starts on day the shows DVD hits store shelves and takes the cast to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Munich, Paris, London and New York. The HEROES NBC website will feature video and photos from each of the International locations as well as blogs and personal photos from the cast.

Speaking of cast, all the actors seemed excited about this tour though Milo Ventimiglia was upset that he could speak Australian but the land down under unfortunately wasn’t on the schedule for the tour cities. Adrian Pasdar commented that he and Masi Oka recently returned from Monte Carlo and the fans were universal in their appreciation that the show was about hope and love and that ideal was communicated across any linguistic boundaries that may have been presented. What was impressive to them is the fact that the show hasn’t even aired there yet! When asked if anyone had ever done anything like this before Greg Grunberg made reference that this was like the Brady Bunch going to the Grand Canyon. Greg and his wife also recently returned from Paris where Season 1 of the show hasn’t even aired yet he was amazed at the reaction received from fans there that have only seen HEROES via the Internet. Most of those have only seen the show via illegal downloads. Also, in Paris this past April, Zach Quinto was on hand for the Jules Verne Festival where the show was honored with an Adventurous Spirit award, he noted that in a country where the show hasn’t yet been released, over 3000 people lined up to attend the event. It is clear that HEROES fans span the globe (not the one made of cake).

Once the world tour announcement was made, Tim began answering questions about other HEROES related topics, the 1st bit of good news is that Season 2 began taping this week and still was on track to premiere in the end of September. Applause erupted. When asked if the appearance of certain cast members who allegedly died in Season 1, that were present today for this announcement signified that perhaps they were returning for Season 2, Kring made note that they were all here because the world tour represented the 1st season of the show. Groans erupted. Greg Grunberg spoke up and stated that be began shooting that day, despite taking “four to the chest” in the last episode. San Diego Comic Con last year is where the show made its debut, this year plans are underway to bring the entire cast, writers and producers back as a thank you to fans and possibly give a sneak preview for Season 2. (Note: the 73 minute uncut version of the pilot episode will be a part of the DVD release, this version was originally showed at last years Comic Con). Another note about the DVD release; it will include 50 deleted scenes, 5 featurettes and cast/crew commentary starting about 9 episodes in and continuing thru the end.

Regarding the 6 episode HEROES origins anthology series, Tim mentioned that it has not yet been written, it will not contain any of the original cast members and will be based on separate storylines of new super-powered characters around the world and their own experiences. The Origins mini-series won’t make its debut until late April 2008 after the season finale of the 2nd Season on HEROES. Jack Coleman revealed that even though at the end of last season when his characters real name of Noah was announced, that his Horned Rimmed Glasses (HRG) nickname was still being used in this Season’s scripts. He says he’s perfectly happy with the acronym! Adrian Pasdar introduced himself and suddenly realized he might have slipped by saying “I’m Adrian Pasdar and I play…played…played…?” He stopped mid sentence before saying anything more. Adrian and Milo’s looks are a lot different than fans will remember of the Petrelli brothers. Being that the 1st episode of Season 2 is called “Four Months Later” if their look today was any indication of how they will appear when taping; expect Peter to have super short hair and Nathan to look like a dark bearded grizzly man. Tim also made mention that there was a tremendous amount of mystery surrounding what events transpired since the showdown at Kirby Plaza and the 1st few episodes of the new season will bring fans up to speed.

And what ever happened to that giant globe looking cake? Tim Kring was handed the “weapon of choice” to cut the cake, Hiro’s katana sword. Hayden Panettiere who was standing next to the sugary iced Earth told Tim to be careful with the over-sized knife, that she wasn’t really indestructible. The cast laughed and the sword plunged in somewhere around Munich. The cake was delicious, I saved you a piece.

It’s events like this that make theTVaddict.com worth the effort. Yes, you heard me. Watching television is serious ‘work’ and today was no exception. This morning, the TV Addict reported live from the 2007 GLOBAL TV UpFront, and believe you me, it was no treat. Especially when I had to suppress an audible groan when HEROES stars Masi Oka and Adrian Pasdar were asked — no doubt the millionth time — who their personal hero was!

Okay, who am I kidding? Stupid questions aside, the Global TV UpFront were as exciting as one would imagine. After-all, it’s not often that I get to sit front row and question HEROES stars Masi Oka and Adrian Pasdar, drink coffee while congratulating BROTHERS & SISTERS star Balthazar Getty on all his success and get the opportunity to chat with the hardest working guy in show-business — Ryan Seacrest.

Now onto the festivities.

The event started off with a Q&A featuring HEROES stars Masi Oka (Hiro Nakamura) and Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli). Not surprisingly, Pasdar was tight-lipped on what fans can expect come season two explaining, “When the show first started, the network wanted us to talk to anyone who wanted to talk to us. But now that we’re a hit, we can’t say anything.”

Of course the Tim Kring mandated gag order didn’t stop Masi Oka from revealing a possible future guest star on HEROES — his former boss at ILM — George Lucas. Oka ran into Lucas (whom he’d never met throughout his ten years working at ILM) at a recent CGI Awards dinner. Turns out, Lucas is a big fan of the show and jokingly said he’d love to play a villain, but only if he could utter the ominous words, “kill them all!”

Next up in the hot seat was BROTHERS & SISTERS star Balthazar Getty. As expected, Getty spoke glowingly about his fictional family and took a moment to single out his TV mom Sally Field (as all good sons should). “Sally Field is as great as you’d expected her to be. Professional, gracious, funny and warm.” joked Getty, “Like a real mom, she’s the disciplinarian on the set. When me and the boys screw off, she’s always there to put us back in our place.”

Following Getty was the beautiful Sarah Carter, whom many of you may recognize as district attorney Madeline Poe on SHARK. Not being a huge fan of SHARK myself, I didn’t have any questions for her, but my fellow reporters were more than curious about what it was like working with the James Woods. Naturally Carter had nothing but praise for her legendary co-star saying, “James Woods is a dynamic and fabulous human being. Working with him has been a great learning experience. But more than anything, he’s just a wonderful person, incredible teacher and I continue to be humbled by his presence.” WOW, that didn’t sound rehearsed at all.

The UpFront ended with the hardest working guy in show-business — Ryan Seacrest. Seacrest was in Toronto promoting the launch of E! Canada (formerly CH TV). Seacrest was well spoken, articulate and quick to squash the rumor that Paula and Randy would not be returning to AMERICAN IDOL next season. “I spoke to Randy yesterday and he didn’t mention anything.” elaborated Seacrest, “The chemistry with the group that we have now would be impossible to re-create.”

That my friends, was the UpFront in a nutshell. For each Q&A in its entirety, as well as more stories and photos, please check back tomorrow and Friday. Canadians can also check out all the great new shows GLOBAL TV has in store for us by clicking on the 2007 Fall Schedule.

A final note if I may — a thank-you to GLOBAL TV, and more specifically Dan Kenning and the entire publicity team at CanWest. From the time I arrived at Massey Hall to the moment I left with my fantastic swag bag (seriously, who doesn’t love free stuff!), this TV Addict truly felt like the Canadian version of Michael Ausiello (minus the weird smurf obsession).

TheTVaddict just got off the phone with HEROES stars Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli), Malcolm McDowell (Linderman) and Cristine Rose (Angela Petrelli). While the actors couldn’t reveal too much about the season finale — having taken the Tim Kring oath of secrecy — they did reveal a few morsels of scoop that fellow HEROES addicts will no doubt find fascinating.

When asked about what fans can look forward to in the finale, Adrian Pasdar had this to say:

In the final few minutes of the finale, all the questions that were posed in the show’s pilot will be answered. In fact, everything gets resolved in a big way.

My character [Nathan] plays a huge part in the final scene. And let me say this, it’s mind-blowing, stunning the way everything comes together.

Season two will pick up at the very end of the finale and I don’t think anyone will guess where. Needless to say, it’s a very, very interesting place.

Leave it to a bunch of HEROES to make this TV addict look stupid. The week after I complain that the HEROES writers were using the ’shape-shifting gag’ far too often, well, they manage to fool me again.

Sylar as President Nathan Petrelli! Talk about evil genius — I did not see that coming. Perhaps I was too distracted by the coolness of future Peter (how bad-ass was that scar?), or the remarkable friendship between Hiro and Ando, but I honestly thought that power had simply taken hold of Nathan, driving him to do some really stupid things. After-all, he is a politician, and let’s face it — we all know that people in power do stupid things in order to hold onto it.

Chapter Twenty of HEROES was almost perfect and with a mere three episodes left, the show is truly firing on all cylinders leading up to what will no doubt be a fantastic finale. That said, we at theTVaddict.com thought we’d offer up a few more questions for fellow HEROES addicts to answer.

1. If Peter can heal himself, why couldn’t he heal the massive scar on his face?

2. Is anyone tired of the shameless plugs for primatechpaper.com (oh the irony of yet another shameless plug!)

3. If Sylar is such an evil genius, why doesn’t he kill the Haitian and take his power? You’d think the ability to ‘turn off’ an adversaries power would be something he’d want.

4. Where was Linderman in the future? And more importantly, did the future turn out how he planned? It didn’t seem that the world was united in grief. It seems as though the world was even more divided then ever.

5. If Peter has the ability to time travel (since he’s been in close proximity to Hiro), why didn’t he team up with future Hiro and help him stop ‘the exploding man’ — which it turns out, is himself.

6. When is Sylar going to die? Sure we’re all loving the Peter vs. Sylar rivalry now. But eventually the constant face-offs are bound to grow tedious. Who’s Molly Parker and how does a little girl have the power to defeat Sylar? (Could she be a Sylar’s younger sister whom we’ve yet to meet?)

7. Was anyone else a little put off by the whole 9/11 aspect of the episode? Yes I realize that HEROES is a TV show and complete fiction. But for some reason, I just found the whole dramatization of a New York tragedy a little off-putting.

The feeling is somewhat similar to the unpleasantness I felt while watching the original HEROES pilot. In the original cut of the show, there was an entire plotline that dealt with suspected arab terrorists. The plot was, in my opinion, rightly cut out of the pilot that premiered in September because it felt a little too real. HEREOS is supposed to be fun, a fantasy, an escape. No one wants to be reminded as to just how awful (at times) the real world can be.

8. With Isaac gone, who’s been paying rent on his New York loft for five years? Living in New York isn’t cheap.

This past Tuesday, also known as Halloween, the TV Addict had the chance to talk to HEROES stars Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli) and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli). Not surprisingly, both actors who play ‘make-believe’ for a living didn’t dress up for Halloween. But they did have some very interesting things to say about being part of the fall’s newest hit show.

Did you ever imagine HEROES would become the hit it has?

Milo Ventimiglia: The pilot script was different then anything I’d read in a long time. It was a huge departure from the misfit younger characters I’ve been playing [GILMORE GIRLS, AMERICAN DREAM] which I was definitely excited about.

Adrian Pasdar: The moment I had an idea [that the show would become a hit] was at July’s San Diego Comic Con. The fire marshall came over to Jeff Leob (HEROES Executive Producer) and told us that we have too many people in the hall and we’d have to shut down. Jeff said, “You go tell them they can’t watch the show.” At that moment, I realized we’d have an initial shot at a large audience and it was up to us to deliver.

Milo Ventimiglia: The overall response has been positive. I’m starting to hear things from people on the street or my friends, asking about Nathan. It’s nice to know that hopefully we’re doing our jobs well enough that people are talking about the show.

Adrian Pasdar: It’s nice to be a part of the water-cooler conversation.

Is there any concern that the show is too complicated for the casual viewer?

AP: I think network television has underestimated the intelligence of viewers for many years. I think the average viewer is much more intelligent than executives give them credit for. They crave intensity and are willing to sit down and watch a quality show.

Why do you think audiences of all ages and demographics are getting into the show

MV: I think it’s just the subject matter and the state of the world. My best friend and his grandmother who is 88 watches the show. I don’t think there’s one storyline that plays to a younger audience and one to an older audience. There’s something for everybody.

AP: I think people want to watch a show like this. Especially in the world we live in, where Terrorism is a fact of live. Audiences want to see ordinary people take extraordinary steps to make the world a better place.

It’s a great time for Science Fiction on television.

AP: When times are dire around the world — every corner of the globe seems to be under some imminent or immediate threat. This kind of escapism grows wings faster in times of trouble. After WWII, heroes were created and the same thing is happening now. This kind of show speaks to peoples fantasy.

The series is also more rooted in reality, with no capes. I hate to say reality TV, but it’s tapping into that sense of reality television, drawing you in on a weekly basis. It’s more rooted in reality then any other super hero show that’s come on TV.

Can you comment on the excitement you’re feeling as a result of the shows success?

AP: Well to be honest, we’ve got our son out of diapers (Adrian Pasdar is married to Dixie Chick Natalie Maines) and that is really a big moment. The excitement around our house is never focused on success outside of it. We both realize that success comes and goes and is fleeting. Ultimately I think the union that we share with our family is a much more powerful influence. Having said that, sure we’re really excited. She’s on tour and the documentary is doing well. Success is not accompanied by a loud bang, it kind of creeps in the door and sits down quietly.

Does Natalie watch the show?

AP: She watches it in Australia on tour. She loves it and wants to know why she has to download it from iTunes and not get sent the DVDs.

How do you feel about the same network that your show is on [NBC] not wanting to air commercials for your wife’s documentary film SHUT UP AND SING?

AP: That’s a touchy issue, but I can’t say I condone the behaviour by NBC. I think it’s cowardly. Television is free for the people and the network should not take it upon themselves to be a sieve for what’s acceptable. It’s a documentary for heavens sake — It’s not a fictionalized account [the movie]. I think it’s a sad commentary and I’d be a liar if I didn’t say I was extremely disapointed.

Let’s talk character specifics. Milo, how quickly did you discover your power?

MV: Going into the pilot, I had no idea. I simply thought that there was a dynamic relationship between Nathan and Peter. it wasn’t until a couple of months later, at the May Upfronts [in New York], that Tim walked up to me and said I think we figured out Peter… then he delved into his explanation.

Does ‘Save the Cheerleader’ include hooking up with the cheerleader?

MV: She’s 17, so that’s a story that will never happen. But there is a definite connection that Claire develops with Peter, from Peter’s perspective, it’s more of a big brother thing with her. But Peter has a connection with every character because of his power.

We’ve seen you take on powers of other characters when you’re in a room. Are we going to see you in a room with two super heroes?

MV: The physical pressure that Peter feels in a room with two super heroes could be mentally overwhelming. We do get into it in future episodes. Potentially, Peter could be the most powerful super hero.

Two weeks ago, we watched as Nathan rocketed through the sky. In a political climate, how long until someone discovers your superpower?

AP: It’s TV, so they can keep it under wraps for as long as they need to. When it serves the story, they’ll dole it out in pieces. Of course there will probably be someone who finds out about Nathan’s secret and has to be dealt with.

Is you character good or bad?

AP: My take on the character is that of playing Richard III. All I need is a physical malady to get really Shakespearean. Is he good or bad? I don’t think there’s an absolute. I do think there’s a dark side that has to be dealt with though. On the show in general, people who you think are good will probably turn bad so it wouldn’t do me any good to speculate. I think there is a whole lot of both. Hopefully it’s just interesting to wtach. I’m as much a fan and along for the ride as the public is.

In comparison to actors on say LOST, you seem to know a little more about your characters. How much do you want to know?

MV: We approach it like everyday life. There are hopes and ideals of where you might be and where the character goes. The scripts can come out, you have a couple of conversations with the writers, but for me, I like to have a vague idea of what’s coming up and focus on the page.

AP: We’re six episodes ahead of what aired last night [Chapter Six]. We’ve all had conversations individually and they’re [the writers] very open to hearing our thoughts about what’s been written so far and possible directions. But they do have bigger and brighter plans of where we’re going. They have a pretty good idea through the rest of season one where it’s going and how it’s going to end up.

MV: One or two writers will often sneak to the set and say, “Dude, you’ve got some cool stuff coming up.” Unfortunately they won’t elaborate.

Is there any truth to the rumour that the major story arcs will be concluded halfway through the season?

AP: From all of our perspectives, there can’t be an end to the story. One door closes and another door will open. There may be periodic endings to subplots, but the overall arch to the story is never-ending.

Can you guys elaborate on Nathan and Peter’s relationship, and perhaps the challenges of playing it out on screen.

AP: I have a lot of respect for Milo as an actor and a human being. There’s an adversarial alpha male tone to the relationship. I don’t always treat Peter onscreen with the respect that one would hope for. So that’s somewhat of a challenge — to understand it’s real on screen but doesn’t reflect the respect that we share for eachother off screen. Of course that’s the nature of acting.

Can you sum up your take on Nathan’s perspective relationships with both Nikki and his wife?

AP: My wife understood coming into the relationship what it would take to be a politicians wife. There’s a sense of guilt that’s permeated. [It's] an accident that Nathan feels guilty for…. [in episode #9 or #10] we get information from this accident on a few fronts, not just this one that explains why she’s [Nathan's Wife] in a wheel chair.

In terms of Nikki, there’s a classic attraction between the two of them – based on the fact that he’s a politician and she’s a stripper. In terms of my character, it’s great that they put my character with the person who would be the biggest liability. In terms of the attraction, I could go on…. but she’s hot, and he’s powerful.

We’re starting to see more connections between characters.

MV: In the beginning, we asked Tim when we’d start connecting, as there are so many actors. Timm said we’d weave in and out of stories. Some characters will meet up right away, others will take longer depending on their circumstances.

Do you guys find yourself fans of the other stories?

MV: Absolutely

Tim Kring has made a point to say that the show is really about the relatinoships between characters, no the superpowers. Milo, can you comment on Peter’s relationship with Simone?

MV: It’s one of those relationships like many on the show that’s kind of the foundation of where we are all going. Peter has a big heart and is a caregiver and naturally falls in love with Simone who’s of course attached to someone else. It’s just one of those complicated things that add drama to the show. In future episodes, Simone will actually help him along in understanding he’s going through.

AP: The Petrelli family dynamic is an interesting one. Seeing that Nathan is in the game of politics, the White House is the ultimate destination. The combination of family dynamics and politics will no doubt be very interesting in future episodes.

Would the series work without the comic relief of Hiro and Ando?

MV: I think there has to be a balance to the dramatic element. Just as something heavy and forlorn is happening, it’s nice to go to a lighter place with Hiro or Ando.

AP: I would agree with Milo. With the density of the story-lines, you need an optimistic hero like Hiro to be a key element to the success and failure of the show. Masi Oka (Hiro) is fearless and wonderfully suited for the job.

With the popularity of the show, are you concerned with being typecast as a ‘Hero’ for the rest of your career?

AP: We’re not specific superheroes (ie. Superman). So if we do our jobs well, I don’t think there’s a danger of being typecast.

MV: At the foundation of the show, it’s a character drama.

What’s been the most surprising aspect of your HEROES experience thus far?

AP: It all seems to have been so well mapped out. There have been no accidents. Everything here has been very well thought out and a lot of work has gone into the crafting of it. For me it’s all gone off without a hitch, according to the plan. The goal was to do quality TV with good special effects and well drawn characters. Those goals have been met. You can never predict what audiences want, but all you can do is deliver your best. And everyone realizes the potential and we’ve done our best to deliver that.

MV: The execution and the collective talent of everyone involved. We have so many talented people working well together.

AP: On Friday we generally screen the episode at lunch for everyone before it airs on Monday. Everybody grabs their plates and sits down and waits for the screening. At every commercial break, people scream. People that work on the show are as big, if not bigger fans than the people who watch it. They’re just so happy to be apart of it and it shows. The cast and crew can’t wait to see the show. We’re all working in different works, acting, crew, special effects. To see it all come together on Friday afternoon is so rewarding and so exciting.

Check back tomorrow for some great insight and scoop on television’s newest hit drama. That said, here are two questions that I found particularly interesting, yet have absolutely nothing to do with HEROES.

Question for Milo: If this happens to be GILMORE GIRLS last season, would you consider returning as Jess?

Milo Ventimiglia: With GILMORE GIRLS last season, I went back because Dan and Amy [Sherman-Palladino] asked me too. I’ve never met David [new executive producer David Rosenthal)] and I’m pretty busy working on HEREOS, so I don’t see it happening.

Question for Adrian: How do you feel about the same network that your show is on [NBC] not wanting to air commercials for your wife’s documentary film SHUT UP AND SING [Adrian Pasdar is married to Dixie Chicks band member Natalie Maines]?

Adrian Pasdar: That’s a touchy issue, but I can’t say I condone the behaviour by NBC. I think it’s cowardly.
Be sure to visit theTVaddict.com tomorrow for more with Adrian Pasdar and Milo Ventimiglia. Rest assured, they talk HEROES… not politics! This TV Addict was incredibly impressed with how well both actors spoke and articulated answers to practically every question under the sun.
