theTVaddict Sizes Up the CW’s New Shows

May 18th, 2007

gossip girl cw

Who’d have thought that a project called GOSSIP GIRL would quickly become the least talked about new series on the CW’s fall 2007 slate. While the show, from OC creator Josh Schwartz definitely looks to be a winner — after-all, who doesn’t love glitzy New York socialites and OC levels of melodrama — the real talked about shows were some of the CW’s more offbeat and original offerings.

aliens in america cw

Namely, ALIENS IN AMERICA. Now I know what you’re thinking — EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS aside, ‘funny’ and the CW are two words that don’t generally go together. Well, if the reaction from the UpFront audience was any indication, the CW may have its first bona-fide comedic hit on its hands (translation: people actually laughed).

ALIENS IN AMERICA tells the story of Justin Tolchuk, a sensitive 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare that is high school. Realizing that her son needs a friend, Justin’s mom signs the family up for the school’s international student exchange program. Needless to say, if BORAT taught us anything, it’s that America loves its foreigners. Come fall 2007, the next big CW star is going to be a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslin named Raja.

What Was Your Favourite Thursday Finale?

May 18th, 2007

First off, a question for the TV networks if I may. Why would you schedule your most important event of the year [the UpFront presentations] on the same week as some of the year’s biggest season finales? As a result of covering the UpFronts in New York, this TV Addict has had to miss some of May’s most exciting television events. The finales of UGLY BETTY, GREY’S ANATOMY, SCRUBS, THE OFFICE, SMALLVILLE, and SUPERNATURAL are all anxiously awaiting for me on my PVR when I return home (holy frak it’s hard to avoid spoilers!). Who’d have thought a television network would be guilty of such poor scheduling*.

So here’s where you come in dear readers. Let me know what show should be first on my MUST WATCH list upon my return home. Are Pam & Jim going to live happily-ever-after? Did Callie finally discover the truth about Izzie and George? Did she lose it? What exactly was in Fay’s secret love dungeon on UGLY BETTY? Is Sam alive on SUPERNATURAL? And did J.D. ruin Eliot’s love life yet again? Play programmer and let me know what I should be watching first. And please, spare me the spoilers.

UPDATE: Thanks everybody for the great suggestions. Right now I’m stuck at LaGuardia airport awaiting my flight home (sad!). I was hoping to download last night’s episode of THE OFFICE on my iPod, but sadly, iTunes hasn’t posted it yet. Instead I’ll be checking out UGLY BETTY on abc.com. Considering I have four hours until my flight, I have a feeling I’ll get to GREY’S and SUPERNATURAL as well. Really, what did people do before wireless internet?

UPDATE II: Just finished watching Tuesday’s VERONICA MARS. Really great episode punctuated by the fact that there’s only two hours of the series remaining. On a related note, if you’re like me and once in a while need to turn off the TV in order to pick up a good book (yes, it’s true), I highly recommend a real story about one child soldier’s incredible story. A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Bean.

4:18PM: Yeah! Less baseball in the fall on FOX. Again, this isn’t theSPORTSaddict.

More on the VERONICA MARS Cancellation

May 17th, 2007

In the comments, frequent contributer JESSICA just posted:

The CW is dead to me. I don’t care how good any of these new shows are. Let the boycott begin.

Added Vance:

I was just about to say that. DEAD TO ME. The CW. The War is ON. (the june 15th thing is over according to Michael Ausiello’s conversation with Ostroff after the presentation at around 12:47pm)

First let me take a moment to go out on a limb and tell you what you don’t want to hear. Ausiello is wrong. Yes, Dawn Ostroff does have until June 15 to make a final FINAL decision on the fate of Mrs. Mars, but the reality is that Michael Ausiello is only keeping a glimmer of hope alive for fans of the show because let’s face it, with GILMORE GIRLS and VERONICA MARS gone — so to are a large group of very dedicated readers.

Don’t get me wrong, Ausiello is fantastic and definitely has the world’s greatest job. But I to attended the CW press conference and heard Dawn Ostroff’s tone. VERONICA MARS is dead, and not just because of low ratings. If the preview clips of the CW’s new series are any indication, the network has developed some fantastic, original and fun new shows that fit the CW brand perfectly. It’s time to give some fresh shows a chance.

VERONICA MARS was given three seasons to make it work — two more seasons than it deserved if we’re looking at the show from a pure ratings point-of-view. The show had a good run and will be remembered as one of those ‘brilliant but cancelled’ shows along side some of theTVaddict’s personal favourites (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, EVERWOOD, KIDNAPPED and FIREFLY to name a few)

Tune in later today for my thoughts on the CW’s new slate of fantastic looking programs.

VERONICA MARS OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

May 17th, 2007

In a press conference following the CW UpFronts, network president Dawn Ostroff officially revealed to some very disappointed reporters that, “Veronica Mars is not coming back.” Additionally, when asked about the mid-season possibilities or the much talked about FBI scenario — Ostroff shot that down as well saying, “It’s not going to happen.”

A few more questions were tossed Ostroff’s way, but the tone of her answers were pretty clear. She loved the show, Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell. But VERONICA MARS season four simply isn’t going to happen. Let the mourning begin.
