Tonight’s TV Addictions: February 2, 2009

February 2, 2009 By theTVaddict 14 Comments

Tough choices will have to be made tonight thanks to the fact that for the first time in a while, all five of the main networks have original programming on at both 8PM and 9PM. Here’s the breakdown of who’s showing what:

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW, A Channel in Canada)
As Blair once again proves why she’ll never be the teacher’s pet, Chuck wakes up in a hotel room with no memory of the previous night’s events. Who does he call for help in piecing things together? Why, Nate and Vanessa, of course. It ain’t like they’ve got anything else to do like, say, take part in a plot that revolves around them.

THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Life lesson Penny really should have learned by now: When times get help, don’t turn to Sheldon. He can only make matters worse.

CHUCK (8PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
Are we watching? Absolutely. Are we bitter that this TV Addict’s Canadian Broadcaster CityTV completely dropped the ball by failing to ensure 3D glasses were available to Canadian CHUCK fans? You betcha!

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
The clock is ticking down for Robin, who has to get a job or be sent packing. Fortunately, Barney is willing to lend a helping hand… and surely nothing could go wrong with that scenario, right?

24 (9PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Dubaku sets his sights on sending another powerful message as Jack and his band of misfits try to prevent things from getting any worse. All we wanna know is when Janis and Chloe will finally cross paths. Let’s face it… that’s where the real suspense lies!

HEROES (9PM NBC, 10PM Global in Canada)
This cycle is gonna be great! No, seriously, they promise! Sure, they said that about Villains, but if you just give ’em one more chance… yeah, um, we’re going to give this show one more shot. And only because DAMAGES’ Zeljko Ivanek is guest starring.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (11:30PM NBC, Global in Canada)
Taking a break from over 202 plays on our iPhone, Jason Mraz stops by SNL with Steve Martin returning for his 15th time as host.

NEW & NOTABLE:
ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY (8PM ABC)
Like many Will Ferrell flicks, you’ll either love this or hate it. Oddly, I find this edited version a lot more palatable than the original.

CRUSOE (8PM ABC)
They’re calling this a “first-season finale”, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and call it a series finale.

SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS (8PM CBS)
For some of us, commercials are the best part of the big game. So it can’t be too surprising that someone was smart enough to package the best of the best like this. But the program does create a major dilemma for those of us who usually go to the bathroom during commercial breaks. I mean, the show is commercials buffeted by commercials!

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (9PM NBC, GlobalTV in Canada)
One of the things we’ve always loved about this show is the sense one gets that these are, for the most part, real people in the real world. Tonight’s a great example, as Smash worries how his mom is going to pay for college. Maybe they should hang out with Billy and Tim, who are cooking up a money-making scheme. For that matter, maybe weshould hook up with them. A little extra cash never hurt anyone… right, Mr. Madoff?

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (10PM Sci Fi, Space in Canada)
Or as we’re calling tonight’s installment, Valkyrie in Space [Click here for spoilers]

NEW & NOTABLE:
WIFE SWAP (8PM ABC)
A fast food-lovin’ mom switches places with a woman who is big on healthy living. Can’t we all just get along?

HOWIE DO IT (8PM NBC, Global in Canada)
A woman invites her loved ones to watch as she marries a stranger on a television show. Wait, are they trying to repackage WHO WANTS TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE? You can’t fool us!

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
PRIVATE PRACTICE (10:02PM ABC)
Now that SWINGTOWN is officially dead (as opposed to all those months when it was unofficial dead), Grant Show is free to join the cast as Addison’s brother, Archer.

SUPERNATURAL (9PM CW, CityTV in Canada)
Think hell is tough? That’s nothing compared to high school, as Sam and Dean find out while investigating a series of murders at their alma mater. How can you not love an episode titled “After School Special?”

NEW & NOTABLE:
UGLY BETTY (8PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
Endless reruns like this. Extended hiatus. Yeah, ABC isn’t trying too hard to kill off Betty and company.

SMALLVILLE (8PM CW)
Ever wonder how the economic recession is impacting LutherCorp? I mean, they have a heck of a lot of ”secret facilities”, all of which have to be major cash drains, right? Anyway, tonight, Tess breaks into one such facility and makes a shocking discovery while Clarke learns Lex is still be alive… and may be holding Lana captive. He also gets a bit of insight into Lana’s post-coma life.

AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The bad news: Still more auditions. The good news: After this, it’s on to Hollywood week!

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
LOST (9PM ABC, “A” in Canada)
So who’s been attacking the survivors? Locke gets a clue as to their identity. Meanwhile, Desmond tries to find the woman who might help that damn island stop hop-scotching through time.

LIE TO ME (9PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Is a female soldier’s charge that she was raped by her sergeant truth or fiction? I’m going with truth, because this show doesn’t really seem deep enough to deal with the consequences of a woman falsely crying rape. But I’ve been wrong before. Once.

LIFE ON MARS (10PM ABC, Global in Canada)
Here’s hoping a post-LOST slot will give this show a much-deserved boost. Tonight, a battle breaks out between two rival cops and Sam is drawn to a pretty young social worker. Dude, don’t you have enough on your plate what with NoNuts and that hippie neighbor and even the occasional awkward moments shared with your hot mom-who-doesn’t-know-you’re-her-son?

DAMAGES (10PM FX)
Ellen and Tom take a road trip which might provide some answers about that mysterious Ultima National Resources. Back home, Patty works to clear Daniel, who may be one of the most uncooperative and mean clients ever!

NEW & NOTABLE:
CBS EVENING NEWS (8PM CBS)
Apparently, the networks are just plain giving up. First, NBC gives the 10 p.m. slot to Jay Leno. Now, CBS dedicates 30-minutes of primetime to Katie Couric’s recapping the days events. You know, like she did a couple hours earlier on, um, the CBS EVENING NEWS. She’d better hope something really good — read: bad — happens. (Not for nothing, but if CBS was going to basically throw away this hour, why not do it against the new episode of LOST airing at 9 p.m. instead of the rerun airing in this slot?)

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SCRUBS (9PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights! It’s time to meet the Muppets on The Muppet Show SCRUBS tonight!

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Just in time for us to get over last week’s gruesome giant slugs, tonight’s installment features a killer who turns his victims’ brains into liquid. Yum.

NEW & NOTABLE:
TRUE LIES (7PM TNT)
Can’t wait until the DOLLHOUSE’s February 13th premiere for your Eliza Dushku fix? Check out her big break in one of our all-time favorite James Cameron flicks.

HOMELAND SECURITY USA (8PM ABC)
A woman goes to major extremes in order to try and look like the picture on her fake ID, and a U.S. citizen is denied entry to Canada. And heck, they’ll let anybody in!

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
HOUSE (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Cuddy’s busy babysitting, so Cameron winds up supervising House, who is dealing with a very nice patient. In the way only House can, he thinks that maybe nice ain’t such a good thing.

24 (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Jack has a bold plan to set things right. Can you imagine if just once, he had a kinda bland plan that involved not torture or subterfuge, but sitting down over a bucket of KFC. Maybe I’m just hungry. In other news, President Taylor has to decide whether or not her administration is going to negotiate with terrorists.

NEW & NOTABLE:
THE BACHELOR (8PM ABC)
Synergy alert! Six of the remaining nine ladies — and I use the term loosely — join the title stud on a trip to the set of GENERAL HOSPITAL, where they hang with that show’s Bradford Anderson (cybergeek Spinelli) and Kirsten Storms (mouthy Maxie). Give as this is the set of daytime’s most violent show, the gals might wanna don bulletproof vests.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE SIMPSONS (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
In her twentieth year on television, Lisa Simpson continues her remarkable streak of making really cool friends. This week’s “BFF”: Special guest voice Emily Blunt (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA)

UNITED STATES OF TARA (10PM Showtime)
ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Alum Alert! Tony Hale plays Marshall’s English teacher who brings out the Martha Stewart side of Tara’s personality.

NEW & NOTABLE:
THE LAST TEMPLAR (8PM NBC)
In deciding whether or not to tune into the first part of tonight’s four hour NBC miniseries, here is all you really need to know. The producers behind this derivative DA VINVI CODE rip-off are also responsible for last year’s Sci Fi bomb FLASH GORDON.

GOLDFINGER (8PM BBC America)
Do you expect us to talk? Why no TV Addict reader, we expect you to watch… one of Bond’s finest adventures ever.

SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS (8PM TNT & TBS)
EW.com took the words right out of our mouth when they wrote, “Looking for a good drinking game? Chug every time an actor goes on about how this award means the most because it’s from actors. You know, not those — blech! — directors or screenwriters.”
