The second episode of SUPERNATURAL this season introduces us to a new Prince of Hell, brings back the archangel Michael and gets into a deeper exploration of Jack’s nature. After watching this week’s episode, “The Rising Son”, we have some teasers to share with you.
The Demons Are Directionless. With Crowley dead and Lucifer gone, Asmodeus is stepping up to rule Hell and there are changes to be made. The bureaucracy of the Crowley era is gone and fire and brimstone will rule the day again, at least until Lucifer and his son arrive to take over the throne. But with Lucifer gone, Asmodeus wants the boy found and trained by him and he’ll stop at nothing to achieve this. We’ll also learn a new piece of Hell’s mythology thanks to this Prince of Hell.
Taking Care of the Problem. Dean is convinced that he and Sam are just waiting for Jack to go evil. Sam, meanwhile, is convinced Jack is the key to getting Mary back, but Dean still believes their mother is gone for good. While heading home to the bunker, the trio stop at a motel room for the night and Jack continues to be amazed at the world around him and gets a crash course in biblical mythology, as well as his family tree. The brothers take the downtime as an opportunity to test Jack’s abilities, but Jack seems genuinely oblivious to his powers (which leads to a few amusing scenes).
The Mighty Donatello. Donatello, the prophet last seen in season 1 of SUPERNATURAL, is back and how he’s still walking around after his run-in with Amara is quickly explained. He’s been drawn to Jack via the wave of power unleashed at his birth and he also has an important pronouncement about the boy, although the question of Jack’s true nature is still up for debate.
Understanding Jack. Sam is used to feeling like an outsider and having people be frightened of his abilities, so he’s easily able to bond with Jack and show him sympathy. This leads to a nice scene between the pair and more proof that Sam really understands Dean and his behavior.
The Odd Couple. Mary is resigned to her inevitable death at Lucifer’s hands in the alternative universe but, as he rightly points out, he’s far more intelligent and less evil than most people give him credit for. Instead, he wants to use Mary as leverage to get Jack back from the Winchesters. But Mary, understandably, isn’t in the mood to cooperate with the devil. Still, it seems a bit obvious that they might actually need one another to survive this world.
Enter Michael. The archangel Michael bested his brother Lucifer and won the apocalypse in this other universe and when he makes an appearance he’s very surprised to see a new version of Lucifer appear there. And Michael’s appearance does open the door to an interesting dynamic between the archangel brothers that we’ve rarely seen on the show.
