For Canadian Eyes Only: CityTV Unveils 2011-12 Schedule

May 31, 2011 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

After two “gruelling” weeks spent screening pilots in Los Angeles, Keith Pelley (President, Rogers Media), Scott Moore (President, Rogers Broadcasting) and Malcolm Dunlop (Executive Vice President, Programming, Rogers Media Television) returned to Toronto to kick off Canada’s Upfront Week.

What’s more, the didn’t return empty-handed.

In fact, not only did they bring with them HAPPY ENDINGS’ Elisha Cuthbert, 2 BROKE GIRLS’ Beth Behrs, MODERN FAMILY’s Rico Rodriguez, REVENGE’s Henry Czherny and AMERICA’S GOT TALENT phenom Jackie Evancho to help launch the new fall season with a splashy star-studded affair at Toronto’s Canon Theater, they brought with them a message.

CityTV — a station whose identity was once tied most closely to a foul-mouthed sock puppet and a curious collection of late night movies that may-or-may-not have offered this once teenaged TV Addict a 63% of seeing “boobies” — is all grown up thanks in no small part to the acquisition of 13 new series.

Joining an already fantastic lineup that includes the likes of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, COUGAR TOWN, FRINGE, MODERN FAMILY, PARKS AND RECREATION and COMMUNITY on the drama front are THE PLAYBOY CLUB, TERRA NOVA, REVENGE, PERSON OF INTEREST, and PRIVATE PRACTICE, the latter of which was stolen from CTV. While on the comedy front, CityTV picked up 2 BROKE GIRLS, SUBURGATORY, NEW GIRL, LAST MAN STANDING, RAISING HOPE (formerly a Global property), and THE MIDDLE (formerly a CTV property).

Also joining the CityTV line-up in 2012 will be Canadian version of AMERICA’S GOT TALENT and SECRET MILLIONAIRE appropriately titled CANADA’S GOT TALENT, and yes, you guessed it, SECRET MILLIONAIRE CANADA.

Of course, despite CityTV’s extreme makeover network edition, it’s nice to know that the station hasn’t completely forgotten their basic-cable roots. As joining the network’s lineup in midseason — aside that is from SCANDAL, ALCATRAZ, and APARTMENT 23 — will be SHAMELESS, Showtime’s very revealing (emphasis on the “revealing”) series that has already aired on The Movie Network and Movie Central.

So how will Global and CTV counter some fairly sizeable and surprising moves on behalf of the once little-network-that-could? Stay tuned, as theTVaddict.com will be continuing our coverage of Canadian Upfronts all week long.
