In what we nominate as one of the savviest casting moves of 2009 comes December 9th’s MODERN FAMILY — which will unwrap an early holiday gift for fan the form of special guest star Fred Willard — who (as first reported by Fancast’s Matt Webb Mitovich) will play Phil Dunphy’s (Ty Burrell) father. On that same note, the entire time I was watching Thursday’s PRIVATE PRACTICE I was trying to do the math and see if Stephen Collins playing Kate Walsh’s father made sense mathematically. Thoughts?

One of the best parent castings ever. It seems like a lot of times they just find someone who is [relatively] old enough to be the person’s parent (see the casting of Lily’s dad for HIMYM coming up…). Here they actually tried to make them look and seem alike. Bravo.
