First Look: Young Sam and Dean Winchester

January 14th, 2009

On the January 29th episode of SUPERNATURAL titled “After School Special,” Sam and Dean go undercover to investigate a haunting at one of the high schools they attended as a teenager which sparks a flashback, causing them to recall how a young Sam (Colin Ford) was picked on by the school bully while Dean was Mr. Popular (Brock Kelly). Which if you ask us, sounds like the exact plot (minus all those gruesome demons) of one of our all-time favorite WB shows, JACK & BOBBY. Too bad Sam and Dean Winchester can’t bring that brilliant-but-cancelled favorite back from the dead.

Not a bad job casting re: young Dean. How many years is the age gap meant to be between them? Looks more than I thought.

Yeah Sam looks super young compared to Dean and I thought they were only a few years apart. Yum on Young!Dean though.

It looks to me like the difference between 13 year old and a 16 year old. There can be a big gap in just three years depending on when a growth spurt hits.

yeah, I think it’s either 13/16 or so. Oh, and I agree that young Dean is muy bueno. And lil Sammy is adorable too! awwww!

The actor playing Sam just turned 12. Playing up to 13 is pushing it, IMO. Dean was 4 when Sam was six months old, so that would make Dean 16 if Sam is 12 here, but the actor is 23.

I know older actors play teenagers all the time, but it’s jarring me. I hope it’s different on film than in a picture.

On the other hand, the whole idea of this episode makes me squee.

Yeah, Dean is supposed to be 16 in this, and Sam 12: there’s 4 years difference between the pair. A guy doesn’t usually get a growth spurt until 16, 17, 18, in there. So for the actor playing Sam to look so much younger is fairly natural. I also think the kid playing Sam is younger than he’s playing here, and the actor playing Dean is older than he’s playing here! Guess they’re meeting in the middle! But the actor playing Dean finally looks more like Jensen, so I’m glad their going with him. The kid playing Sam did a great job before and I’m glad he’s back!

Little does he know, the actor playing “Young Dean,” Brock Kelly, is about to have his career take off. Frankly, I’m amazed that it hasn’t already, judging by the first photo.

Actually..Dean’s supposed to be around 18..Cuz in the promo, it says 1997..So if one does the math then, Dean’s 18. And Sam’s 4 yrs younger than Dean, so he’s 14 here(assuming the flashbacks in this episode is set in the fall of 1997)
Agreed the age gap looks a lot but I think the casting is excellent!!

I think they were casted this way on purpose. Sam’s supposed to be really short, which is why he was picked on. So if he’s a short 14-year-old. Tall, handsome Dean is gonna look a lot older.

I really do think young dean looks a LOT like the older dean… great job picking the actor… but I have to say… I love young Sammy xD he is a great actor… and so cute you have to love him… he did a great!

Yound dean is cute, I think. But he doesn’t look as smart as Ackles. smart I mean the vivid and attracting thing that is unique in Dean. Maybe that’s why the “sofa”’s friend thinks he looks like Cass.
