Good News:CBS is attempting to snag the rights to the 2014 and 2016 Olympics from NBC. Bad News: We’re not so sure how we feel about their rebranding strategy, “CSI: Olympics” [Source]
Good News:MOMMA’S BOYS, NBC’s latest stab at reality show success tanked in the ratings. Bad News: Yet still managed to do better than ELI STONE among the highly coveted 18-34 demographic. [Source]
Good News: As a result of the sagging economy, CTV is giving CANADIAN IDOL a rest this season. Bad News: The economy has yet to sag low enough to give host Ben Mulroney a rest. Who will still remain gainfully employed at E!Talk Daily. [Source]
From CouchTater: Can someone explain to me why everything from THE BEST OF PASSWORD (seriously?) to MANNIX has been released on DVD, but not THE POWERS THAT BE? For the love of all things politically incorrect, the show stars David Hyde Pierce, John Forsythe, Holland Taylor and a slew of other stars in one of the funniest — and underappreciated — sitcoms to come down the pike. But no, we have to make room on the store shelves for the January 13th release of MATLOCK’s second season. Folks, the people who watch MATLOCK don’t know how to work the DVD players their grandkids forced upon them for Christmas last year.
Adds the TV Addict: I’m with you CouchTater. Because really, who needs to add such favorites like EVERWOOD and JACK & BOBBY to my DVD collection when CBS/Paramount just announced that the second season of CAROLINE IN THE CITY will be released on March 10th, 2009!

NEW & NOTABLE: MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD (8PM CBS)
We’d pass on this game show redux, but since the secret word is Shatner, we’re so there.
SCAM OF THE CENTURY (9PM CNBC)
Talk about ripped from the headlines! If you wanna know how Bernie Madoff pulled off that $50 million ponzi scheme (whether as a guide to what to watch out for or an inspirational video), tune in for a full analysis of the shockingly brazen heist.
WORLD’S DUMBEST CRIMINALS (9PM truTV)
Okay, frankly, we have no clue where to find truTV on the dial, but we will totally seek it out in order to see this special. First of all, it’s brought to us by the folks over at thesmokinggun.com, home of some of the most bizarre crime reports and mug shots you’ll ever see. Second of all, this hour is basically THE SOUP… with criminals doing dumb stuff instead of celebs!

THE GOOD: Afters years of being shuffled around the schedule, BONES has settled nicely into its Wednesday night time-slot to become one of the evening’s highest rated shows. After shifting the focus to Walter (our new favorite mad scientist), FRINGE survived a shaky start to their season to finish off the year strongly. While THE SIMPSONS and FAMILY GUY continue to provide for consistent laughter on Sundays.
THE BAD: Unfortunately, the laughter stops after FAMILY GUY. I mean literally, we really don’t find AMERICAN DAD the least bit funny (and lord knows we’ve given it a fair shot!). Stellar seasons from both TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and PRISON BREAK have gotten buried under what has become the most competitive night of the week. Viewers not surprisingly checked out of the Jerry O’Connell hotel ‘laugher’ DO NOT DISTURB. And quick, we challenge you to name one show on FOX that you watch between Thursday and Saturday.
THE FUTURE: Looks about as unstoppable as Shirley Manson’s Catherine Weaver, as FOX gets ready to unleash its perennial midseason juggernaut AMERICAN IDOL on to a salivating public. A show that not only still owns the highly coveted 18-49 demographic, but more importantly serves as a launching pad to promote exciting mid-season entires like the return of 24, Joss Whedon’s DOLLHOUSE and the Tim Roth vehicle, LIE TO ME. All that plus fans will finally have a reason to turn to FOX between Thursday and Saturday with BONES moving to Thursday night at 8PM and Friday night culminating in a nerd orgasm for SciFi fans with TERMINATOR at 8PM, DOLLHOUSE at 9PM and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA at 10PM (on SciFi, Space in Canada)
In our fifth installment of Advertising Anarchy (theTVaddict.com’s take on how networks might wish to consider promoting some of our favorite new and returning shows come January 2009] we offer up the one line that perfectly captures TNT’s highly entertaining take on the advertising industry.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE (8PM CBS)
No word on whether Christine and Barb are turning their workplace into a day spa just so Julia Louis-Dreyfus can re-inact one of her most iconic SEINFELD scenes. “They’re real… and they’re spectacular…”
GARY UNMARRIED (8:30PM CBS)
Look, we admit it, we like GARY UNMARRIED. It’s just not something we’re particularly proud of. So if you don’t mind, let’s just keep this between us.
PRIVATE PRACTICE (9PM ABC, “A” in Canada)
Kevin questions where he and Addison are headed as a couple. Our vote is for splitsville so that Addison can finally meet someone interesting.
NEW & NOTABLE: LIFE (9PM NBC)
The murder of three Russians leads Crews and Co. to Russian mobster Garret Dillahunt. Oh sure, blame the Terminator.
DIRTY SEXY MONEY (10PM ABC)
The Darlings cope with the impact of a shooting spree that resulted in a death, a coma patient and an amnesia victim. WOW, really!? Kind of makes us wish we didn’t bail on the show at the beginning of the season.
THETVADDICT.COM READER PICK (via Twitter): rural_jurur: MUPPET CHRISTMAS SPECIAL! (8PM NBC) Well, because it’s the Muppets for frak’s sake!
Anybody who caught Annie Wersching as GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Amelia — aka the producer who sought revenge against Kelly Monaco’s Sam by, um, making her a star (even for a soap, that one didn’t make much sense!) — could see that this woman’s star was on the rise. As 24’s FBI agent Renee Walker, the wildly talented Wersching immediately eclipses pretty much everyone else on the screen, which ain’t an easy thing to do given the caliber of talent that show has on board. Better still, it looks like Wersching will be getting a whole lot of air time, as the show immediately makes her a reluctant sidekick to everybody’s favorite torturer, Jack Bauer. While we’re not overly impressed with what we’ve seen of the new season — which suffers from a major case of the “been there, done that” blues — Wersching is the kind of fresh blood that pumps new life into a series and keeps you comin’ back for more.
Look for CT’s full review of 24’s new season — which launches on Sunday, January 11 — on Friday, January 9.
