THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER: Best Worst Show Ever?

August 13th, 2008

secret life of the american teenager teen choice awards cast

After witnessing an absolute train wreck of a Q&A with the cast of THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER backstage following last weeks TEEN CHOICE AWARDS, this TV Addict finally found the impetus to take the plunge, shell out $1.99 on iTunes and check out the pilot episode of the ABC Family hit summer show. I mean could the show possibly be as ‘entertaining’ as the cast’s botched press conference?

Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed.

From the “wasn’t that cool-three-years-ago” Avril Lavigne song that opened the show, to the seemingly never-ending series of trademark Brenda Hampton lectures on subjects ranging on everything from dress codes and abortion, to religion, abstinence and abuse, THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER was exactly what I expected. An unintentionally hilarious after-school special/public service announcement hybrid that is quite possibly secretly funded by some sort of religious group or pro-family organization. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

What’s worse, I’m kind of, err… sort of… umm… curious as to what’s going to happen next.

Will Amy’s parents lose it when they discover what happened at Band Camp? Does Ben finally get acting lessons lucky? Will Ricky fall for Grace and change his philandering ways? And most importantly, will “left wing Hollywood” ever stop painting Band Camp as a pit of social depravity and promiscuity!

I suppose time will tell. But until then, this TV Addict would like to pose this interesting question. Is THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER officially the best worst show in the history of television? Or is it far too early to be passing the torch from 7TH HEAVEN?

John K. Says:

I finally got back into watching down all the episodes saved on my DVR, and it is a darn good awful show. The show is so hilariously offensive in the way it portrays 15-year-olds as people who only talk about sex, who routinely have sex, and who fall in love after one date. You say it’s secretly funded by religious family groups…I say Brenda Hampton is secretly the Devil and this show (along with 7th Heaven) is just a hugely subversive parody of religion. Maybe I’m just disillusioned, but I can’t imagine anyone watching this and thinking the way the show portray’s religion is in any way favorable.

aly Says:

this is the worst acted, worst written, and overall worst show on tv right now….and yet i am totally addicted to it.

Bridget Says:

I love this show. it is very clever. the only bad part of the show is how religious grace and her family are.

BHcolin Says:

I’m older than the target audience and I keep thinking back to when I was 15/16. I don’t ever remember talking about sex like they do on the show. really it feels like that EVERY conversation is about sex. I mean even on Gossip Girl they talk about college, clothes, parties, etc… along with sex — but here it’s just sex.
It is no surprise it’s by the creator of 7th Heaven, it’s very much the same feel. It isn’t a great show, has it’s moments. As with 7th Heaven (which I always thought was a updated family version of Three’s Company- you know someone over hears something and misuderstands then craziness happens then all is good) it deals a lot with religion. I do wonder how people who are religious see the show. I think the Grace character seems like a understanding character but all the sex talk

just my thoughts

Amy Says:

I found the first episode marginally entertaining, almost fell asleep in the second, and having Amy and whatshisname saying they love each other four seconds after they first meet pretty much put me off completely. The only interesting character is Ricky. The acting is horrible, the writing is clunky and unrealistic.

But what I hate most about it is knowing that this kind of rubbish is doing well in the ratings for ABC Family and has been picked up for a second season. While the network’s best new show, The Middleman, probably won’t make it past 12 episodes.

Will Says:

Same, here i think this show should be crap, i find it soo incredibly cheesy, yet i want to find out want happens next and would be gutted if the show got cancelled, how odd, seems like an oxymoron show

Ashley Says:

Okay, so the show has it’s issues. Okay, I take it back the show is one big GIANT issue in itself, but I can’t wait to see the next episode. Even my big, tough, heavy-metal guitarist fiance can’t wait for the next episode and that’s saying something. Some of the show is hilariously awful (the microwave counting down when Amy takes the pregnancy test; hilarious) and the dialogue makes me cringe (some of the acting is bad but you can’t really blame them; they didn’t write the script) but I just have to watch the show! Shailene Woodley is actually an excellent actress; better than all of the others including the adults. The stereotypes portrayed and the sappy-sweetness and ridiculous obvious statements and reflections on life are just Brenda Hampton all the way; that all is not surprising. For some reason everyone seems to be able to look past all of this and compulsively watch the show. I dunno!!! I think it is the best worst show of all time.

shanna Says:

I’m not going to lie. I hate almost every character on this show, almost every forced interaction and I swear Ben makes my eyes rol so far back in my head I’m afraid I’ll never get them back in the sockets … I have yet to miss and episode. I don’t know why. Probably cause Sep 1 hasn’t come yet.

Maggie Says:

I tried the first episode, but I gave up. It was unwatchable. The writing was clunky, the acting wooden… I couldn’t take it. Maybe a marathon will suck me in at some point, though. Never say never.

Liz Says:

This is by far the worst show on tv. The writing is horrible but what is more annoying then the script is the actors. Were there no auditions?

ally Says:

The show is a great show. I think it shows the “could be” side to us teenagers. I’m honestly addicted, and honestly it doesent shock me how amy had sex with ricky on their first encounter, i mean THIS STUFF DOES HAPPEN and it would be very “silly” for people to think it doesent. I’m 16 i’ve been sexually active since june.1.2008 and this show started when i most needed it, it makes you think twice before you do what your going to do, and it makes you question and answer whats next. Instead of it happening to me i can just watch Amy go through it. ;) (WINK!)

Gabby Says:

Amy you are a common statistic…maybe you should think about that. This show is the worst thing since the Hills.

Myself Says:

I think that this show should be supported… it is true that the acting is a bit bad , but it’s true that we have all new actress here and we have no Robert de niro, or tom cruise or other very famous actors.
I think that also the greatest actor became what they become only after making show bad like this one… so, let them grew up and let’s see what they are going to do… nobody should say : “The actors are worse, the setting is worse, it is written worse…” oh come on guys… why do you ever critic each fucking new show who do not have any famous actor? it is getting bored… you are all equals… if there is not any famous actor : “Oh that’s rubbish”, and it’s the same if there is not famous actor or famous director… i’m so tired to go away saying my thoughts… so bye…
