2007 TV Year in Review (Part I)

December 27th, 2007

Class warfare with the least casualties: If the Humphrey clan on GOSSIP GIRL are the “have nots”, the economy must not be doing as bad as everyone says. How else to explain that million dollar space they live in?

Show most likely to give nerds hope: Don’t tell your local Geek Squad guy, but in the real world, dudes like CHUCK don’t land superbabe Yvonne Strahovski.

Trend we wish were happening when we were in high school: Tyra and Landry, Serena and Dan, why weren’t ‘nerds’ cool back in the 90’s Oh, and while we’re on the subject, in our day, our the TV Addict’s family Nanny did not look anything like Grandma Saracen’s nurse.

Proof that six million bucks doesn’t buy what it used to: With it’s fetching, fighting female leads and more hype than God’s comeback, BIONIC WOMAN seemed like the show to beat… until viewers actually got a look at the revamped Jamie Somers and figured out that NBC forgot to hire decent writers.

Best show too many of you aren’t watching: Tina Fey and the team at 30 ROCK have turned their little comedy that could into the SEINFELD of the new millennium. Now of only it could get the kind of ratings Jerry’s antics did.

The TV Addict Has A Serious Problem…

December 26th, 2007

While this news will most likely come as little surprise to fans of this web site, the TV Addict is addicted to buying TV on DVD.

Now generally — this problem is one that I’ve managed to control. Years in TVAA [TV Addicts Anonymous] combined with the recent realization that the money I’ve spent on TV boxed sets could have probably bought me a 50″ flat screen [or a house!] has curbed my spending habits immensely.

That said, vacationing in America changes everything.

Take this morning for instance. Against my better judgement, I took a ride over to the local TARGET after reading online that the third season of THE OFFICE was on sale for only $19.99!

And that my friends was mistake number one. Thirty minutes later this TV Addict left the store with a far heavier shopping bag, and one helluva lighter wallet.

BONES Seasons 1 & 2, THE OFFICE Seasons 1 & 3, DEXTER Season 1, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Season 2, The Best of LARRY SANDERS, THE OC Season 4 and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Season 1.

They were all there and they were all on sale for $19.99. I run a web site called theTVaddict.com — Can you really blame me?

Got a great Boxing Day Deal to share from either Canada or the US? Post away and share the post—holiday TV on DVD love! With no end in sight to this incredibly depressing writer’s strike, DVD may be all we have to get us through the next few months.

Happy Holidays from theTVaddict.com

December 24th, 2007

As I sit in front of the crackling fire flat screen television watching an EXTRAS marathon with the family [God Bless HBO on Demand], this TV Addict wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and a fantastic new year.

The TV Addict’s Chrismukkah List

December 24th, 2007

Since I already snagged myself a Nintendo Wii three weeks ago [suck it Ausiello!] this TV Addict’s Chrismukkah list should be relatively painless to fulfill. Especially since I don’t actually celebrate Christmas.

That said, was it not the wise-beyond-his-years Bart Simpson who said, “Christmas is a time when people of all religions come together to worship Jesus Christ.” Which I’m all for, especially if Santa feels like lightening his load tonight and dropping off a nice 50″ flat screen TV, an Apple TV or TiVO (now available in Canada!) down my chimney.

But let’s get the easy stuff out of the way first shall we. You know, the little things that don’t necessitate the use of Elf labour to complete. Just a snap of [insert network president's name here] fingers.

• First and foremost, this TV Addict would like to see world peace a swift end to the writer’s strike.
• Invites to more fabulous parties with some of my favorite television stars.
• A second PVR. Because sadly, one simply isn’t enough.
• NBC to put their shows back on iTunes. I know HULU’s motto is “Watch your favorites. Anytime. Anywhere.” But as I found out upon getting ready for my current vacation, “Anytime. Anywhere” only includes sitting in front of your computer while connected to the internet. Which doesn’t exactly work on a 15 hour car ride.
• Did I mention an end to the writer’s strike?Check back throughout the day as I undoubtedly think of more altruistic Chrismukkah Gift ideas.

Television’s Naughty & Nice List

December 23rd, 2007

With Christmas a mere two days away, this TV Addict can only imagine how busy Santa must be.

With that in mind, we thought we’d lend the Big Guy in Red a hand by posting our 2007 Nice & Naughty list: Television Edition. Think we left anyone off the list? Post away in the comments below.

Nice: Josh Schwartz for doing double duty this fall. Not only did he give TV Addicts a new show to obsess over with GOSSIP GIRL. He gave our good blogger friend GMMR a new TV boyfriend to stalk swoon over.

Naughty: Both the WGA and the AMPTP for not working out their differences and leaving a neatly wrapped labour agreement under our Christmas trees.

Really Naughty: The AMPTP — because let’s face it, this is all their fault.

Nice: ABC, for allowing LOSTerminds Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse to end LOST on their own terms.

Naughty: Not only did NBC put the brakes on JOURNEYMAN’S journey, their plan to supersize THE OFFICE throughout September robbed fans of our traditional very special OFFICE Christmas.

Nice: Wisteria Lane Realty. Marc Cherry finally ensured an interesting neighbor moved into the neighborhood.

Jenny’s This Week on TV

December 21st, 2007

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Not much happening this week due to the holidays, so take a break and enjoy your friends & family! And be sure and share what loot you got on the big day! ;) As I won’t be back til Wednesday late, I won’t be posting the dailies this week. But there really is not much on aside from Sunday, so you won’t miss it. ;)

Sunday

Sunday is the season finale of Duel on ABC at 8/7c. It’s also the season finale of The Shot on VH1 at 10/9c.

The best thing on tonight imo is a new episode of The Amazing Race on CBS at 8/7c. One of the strongest teams suffers a breakdown in Italy; another team considers permanent changes to their bodies to further their position in the race.

Also on tonight:

  • *Season Finale*Duel – ABC @ 8/7c
  • *Season Finale*The Shot – VH1 @ 10/9c
  • *Special*Elmo’s Christmas Countdown – ABC @ 7/6c (1-Hour Special)
  • *Sports*Football Night in America – NBC @ 7/6c
  • *Sports*Sunday Night Football: Washington at Minnesota – NBC @ 8:15/7:15c
  • *New*CW Now – CW @ 7/6c
  • *New*Kenny vs. Spenny – Comedy Central @ 11:30/10:30c
  • *New*Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood – E! @ 10:30/9:30c
  • *New*The Amazing Race – CBS @ 8/7c

An Ode to JOURNEYMAN

December 20th, 2007

journeyman kevin mckidd

Every season has one. An under-appreciated yet highly entertaining new series that for some reason or another fails to catch on with the majority of the viewing public. Last year, NBC gave us KIDNAPPED. This season’s victim was JOURNEYMAN. And with JOURNEYMAN’s journey coming to an abrupt halt last night, this TV Addict wanted to take a moment to recognize creator Kevin Falls and his entire team both in front of and behind the camera.

From the moment the series premiered, JOURNEYMAN had all the classic symptoms of a soon to be brilliant-but-cancelled series. Frankly, a seasoned TV Addict such as myself should have seen it coming.

Vote for your Favorite TERMINATOR Poster

December 20th, 2007

terminator posters

While I’m well within my rights to go all ‘Debbie Downer’ since the TV Addict’s entry didn’t make it into the final 5 of the TERMINATOR Poster Design Contest, I thought I’d take the high road and help publicize the 5 phenomenal posters that did.

Click here to check out the final 5 poster designs and vote for your favorite. Frankly, they all look incredible and I have yet to decide which talented designer I’m going to help send to the TERMINATOR Launch Party this January. Who are you voting for?

GOSSIP GIRL Recap: Roman Holiday

December 20th, 2007

Last night, the CW gave fans an early Christmas gift with yet another fantastic installment of GOSSIP GIRL. Once again, Serena, Dan, Blair, Rufus and Lily took centre stage, providing fans with more than their share of TiVo—Worthy moments.

In fact, the only character who brought down the fun on the Upper East Side was ‘V’ — who’s quickly becoming the equivalent of THE OC’s Oliver. Can someone please explain to this TV Addict what’s up with Vanessa? No only does she dress like an extra from FAME [HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL of the 80's], she’s stealing ideas from 90’s TV Shows. Serena may have been impressed with Vanessa’s brilliant Christmas gift for Dan, but any FRIENDS fan worth his Central Perk Coffee knows that the whole ‘doing it for the first time’ under the lights was so done ten years ago [See Ross & Rachel and the episode with the Planetarium]

V aside, the episode was fantastic and this TV Addict will be counting down the days until GOSSIP GIRL returns on January 2, 2008. Will Lily accept Bart’s proposal? [I hope not, Lilly and Rufus are so great together] Will Vanessa ever learn that Leopard prints aren’t in fashion? Will Chuck tell Nate about Blair? Are Dan and Serena headed towards splits-ville now that they’ve hooked up in the ‘biblical sense’? Will the TV Addict ever run out of euphemisms for saying Dan and Serena ‘did it?’ Post away with your predictions.
